VIDEO IDEA 🙃 Can you please do a video at the end of breeding season where you review all of your pairings? So eg „next pairing: Enzo and Brad. We hoped for big, red babies. We got 20 eggs, and kept 2 babies. Next pairing: Lily and Shane Co. We hoped for XY and got XY“. Do you know what I mean? Same style than the breeding plans video, but with results. This would be great ❤

I’m the researcher/fan who reached out over the strange… sharpie color data collection saga. Lol. The data was actually from the past few years, not only the last breeding season, though admittedly all the colors were a recent addition so the color data sample was much smaller than the black sharpie data group. It absolutely could be a coincidence, but after noticing certain pigments like the orange and golds associated with more “bad eggs”, just had to pass the information along. So glad to hear it’s sparking another mini experiment. Lol. The researcher in me appreciates it. ❤
@demonkingnetsu4045
@demonkingnetsu4045 Жыл бұрын
Out of curiosity, is your research just collecting data from the hatch rates, or are you looking into the science behind why the hatch rates might be lower? It makes sense that the pigmentations could have a negative reaction, like how artificial flavoring (via the pigmentation) had a link to cancer in humans.
@heliagrey
@heliagrey Жыл бұрын
@@demonkingnetsu4045 I’m a trained researcher, but my research isn’t in this field. I actually just was curious when watching old hatch videos because I had a hypothesis about the red pigments (which didn’t actually seem to bear out, incidentally) and I started comparing the marking videos to their corresponding hatch videos, and went back about two and change years collecting data. That’s all I did- compile data sets for them, and send them a nerdy “hey, this could be a total coincidence, but here you go!” Lol.

@@honeycheerios42 With the size of the data, it was really just an exploratory data set analysis, with identifying outliers in the set and flagging *possible patterns. There wasn’t enough to really get into predictive or a prescriptive analysis- but basically, all that said… I just had too much time on my hands to go back and forth watching and labeling a LOT of videos to check a hypothesis while I was sick for a few days. If you know someone that breeds finches you can ask for them to freeze if any of the baby chicks pass. I never did breed finches or small song birds but some species are quite hard to breed and if they have big clutches parents are not good in feeding them all so some die.

@@katiekane5247 No no but people who breed small songbirds as a sport. usually they are for exhibitions, singing contests for the birds etc. I am not much in to it but I know few in my country and they unfortunately have losses every year. I did wild bird rescue and would ask them on advice on how to hand feed or even what to feed adult birds as in time they became masters of this. I would also ask for hand feed formulas and mixes. I know they try to save every baby but when you have baby birds that are a size of a finger nail and very sensitive it is not always possible. Sometimes they even die due to inexperienced parents. So these can be frozen and used for baby mangroves if they refuse to eat everything else.

In time their songs become more and more complex, have different elements (parts) in them etc. This is then judged in competitions - how long the song is, how many different parts it has, how complex it is. And then birds get awards. You can check canary singing competition on youtube but sometimes other species are also used, to be judged both on their appearance and song.

I always found the markers to be a little concerning, especially with the amount of ink being used in recent time in comparison to surface area of the egg. In medical practice it's frowned upon to use sharpies on IV bags as it's thought the chemicals can permeate through. The same goes for bird eggs where people prefer to use pencils or crayons so there's no chemicals potentially permeating the shell and effecting the developing chicks. Neither have been tested with any solid conclusion so it will be interesting to know the results of these tests, but I still wince everytime sharpie is put on the eggs :s

The black sharpies didn't seem to cause much concern- with outlier data removed, the appx rate of viable eggs that were marked with black sharpie over the past two years of (shown) clutches was about 88.8%. A great rate, overall. Though the color sharpie data set was much smaller set (as fewer eggs are marked in color to begin with, and over a shorter period of time), the success rate was between about 59.64 and 68% for a viable egg. (Outlier data removed improved the percentage.) The sample size is too small to draw a meaningful conclusion yet, so I'm really glad they're running a larger experiment. :)

Just an FYI: a lot of people in the disabled community find the term "differently abled" to be highly demeaning. It implies disability is such a bad thing that the word "disability" shouldn't be used. And it ignores the core fact that we are disabled, there are things we can't do. Disability doesn't give us some magic abilities that other people don't have. I also feel like the term implies that I don't have any of the same abilities as anyone else. I have a lot of the same abilities, but the key point is that there are some things I'm unable to do. Please use the term disabled.

Just wanted to say around the 13 minute mark Ed says 'differently abled', I know it was kinda joking but disabled people overwhelmingly prefer the term disabled, and find 'differently abled' offensive. Source: I am disabled (Didn't want to make it too much of a lecture but for context, the reason it is found offensive is it because it is used pretty much solely by able people, who then frequently lecture us that it's actually the correct term regardless of disabled people's widespread dislike of it, in order to essentially whitewash them our disabilities. It eliminates the idea that regardless of capability, disabled and able people are equal, instead saying that disabled people must be as close to able as possible in order to be equal. Essentially promoting the idea that our disabilities are only acceptable when they are not disabling. Not that that was the intended message here whatsoever, of course, just wanted to provide some context.)

Interesting that no eggs with orange pigment used on them had hatched and that the first one who did seemed to have some development issues. It does suggest that there might be something toxic in that pigment to developing eggs/snakes

Congrats! The babies are beautiful. I'm not sure but, it looks like maybe one has googly eyes more than the other two. It's really cool that you got such variation in colors. I always love baby season. When Emily gets excited about the hatching she often sounds just like the Muppet Gonzo. Hey that might be a cool name. Poor Ed, all scratched up. Thanks for the video

Ahhhh baby season. After all the eggs hatch y’all should make a video reviewing which pairs did or didn’t have healthy babies and if they came out as you expected or if weird stuff happened.

I must ask, what do bad snake eggs smell like? Is it anything like duck or chicken eggs when they go south? Just curious. Love the channel and all you do! Keep up the great work Ed, Emily and crew!! ❤ Sending lots of love from David & Gregory (son - 10 yrs old) from Alaska!

I will admit seeing the yellow sharpie “fade” from the eggs at the beginning worried me. What if the pigment got absorbed with its harmful chemicals by the egg? It could hurt the babies 🥺 Please tell me you guys are looking into it more
@MixR700
@MixR700 Жыл бұрын
The two that lost color were the two healthy babies. The runt was actually from the orange egg which makes the observation more interesting when they said none of the oranges ever hatch - he hatched and was runted. Could be a coincidence, could be something in orange sharpies.

I wondered about that too, not sure if Sharpies are non toxic or not. I have a blue one in front of me but it doesn't say non toxic anywhere on the pen. 😟
@khills
@khills Жыл бұрын
They are AP-certified non-toxic, and aren't harmful to us if you write on human skin with Sharpies. Sharpies are alcohol-based, which means that they do fade over time - and at different rates for the different inks.

If markers end up being a fatal issue for eggs, I know some keepers who use pencils. maybe try colored pencils, maybe even crayons.

what is the nature environment in mangrove when they breed? will it be more humid or hotter then other snakes? and does it effect the egg shell so these babies had harder shell ? ( just a viewer not a breeder, don't know if this question is silly)
