This is one of those behaviors that isn't "trained" to the baby orcas, it's learned. They see the adults doing this, and because that behavior is part of the culture of their environment (just as orcas in different areas of the world have developed different cultural quirks--eating stingrays, catching and killing seal pups along shorelines, rubbing on rocks, etc.), they imitate and adopt the behaviors they see going on. It's not a "trick" to them, it's simply what they need to know how to do. And then they move beyond that. If you look at Makani at SeaWorld San Diego, he imitates the adults, but he ALSO improvises... not for the benefit of trainers or the other orcas, but for the crowd and for his own amusement; he knows he's on show and he knows how to show off, and has been doing so (without commands) since he was about seven months old. During the splash sequences, he frequently breaks away from the trainers' commands and does his own thing. If he's with his mother and another whale and they're doing one thing, he'll do something completely different. So performing really does move beyond doing "tricks" and becomes instead a form of self-expression.

As much as I agree with you, baby Orcas do learn from the adults behaviors, as well as an abundance of life lessons/survival taught by the pods adults. But I have to also state that these [captive] Orcas have also been 'trained' through starvation/physical abuse.. That's why their always so on que and *perfectly* in sync like this. This isn't pure intelligence and free will. When there isn't a show, it's 'training time' or alone time doing the usual pound our own heads into the walls hopelessly, depressed and stressed time.. it's horrific! Hence why Orcas in captivity will inevitably turn against their 'trainers" .

@shaunalee7610 жыл бұрын
***** No they shouldnt be. But what I was saying was you cant just release a parkbred whale back into the wild. My point was that you have to draw a line in the sand. I dont go to places like seaworld and neither does my 8 year old because Im completey against orcas, seals, otters or dolphins in captivity. There is a place for those who cant be released. My point was is that you cant really release captive bred animals, for the most part they cant fend for themselves and some wont survive without human interaction because its all they ve ever know. It doesnt mean I like it or agree with captive breeding.

He learned to enjoy the human interaction he got and when he was released he left his adoptive pod and went to Norway- the one place left on earth where its still legal to hunt wales just for the human interaction. I wish that people weren't so down on Seaworld Orcas. Not only is it a wonderful experience to see the shows, they do a lot for the species, including... - Raise visibility and sympathy for the species. - Conserve a healthy breeding population of animals in case of future disaster for these beautiful creatures. Overfishing and pollution are a real danger to Orcas. - Raise funds and infrastructure for other ocean conservation efforts. In short, if they didn't care about these animals, the Orcas wouldn't be at the park in the first place.

Luna was not human dependent: he was lost, orphaned and tried to meet his social needs through human encounters. No human needed to feed him or teach him anything. He died when he collided with a tug boat. Blame ultimately lies with Canadian wildlife management, because they couldn't come up with a plan for returning him to the wild. Springer, orphaned around the same time, and in similar circumstances, had the NOAA create a plan. A decade later, she's alive, living with a pod, and has a calf.
@liamg531410 жыл бұрын
That baby killer whale is way more intelligent than the average human baby and their families are superior to our families as they stay together for their entire life. We love our dogs and cats and most of us are heartbroken when we see them in shelters or suffering in any way. These whales are suffering, both physically and especially emotionally. They do not belong in a bathtub, they are apex predators and thrive in every ocean in the world. Their intelligence is not debatable, they have complex brains and experience emotions on a greater level with more depth than human beings. Do we torture our dogs? This is not right. What I hope for is that poor Tillkum snaps again. That beautiful whale who at 22 feet and 12,000 lbs has been subjected to physical and mental anguish his entire life. I like Tilly a lot more than those scumbags at Sea World. If he kills again I will be pleased frankly. It is probably too late for him to adjust in the oceans but perhaps he can set the rest of them free by using his incredible physical power and in the process close these stupid marine parks that couldn't give a crap about these animals. A little bit a money to destroy one of the most amazing creatures on the planet. Pathetic and unacceptable. And for those of you that support Sea World in this regard shame on you as well. I'm am rooting for Tilly to drown these jkasses with extreme force and power. Tilly is very strong but emotionally scared, I have tremendous sympathy for him and all of the wonderful Orcas and Dolphins in captivity.

Ryan Dahn "My sister works at SeaWorld, and she told me..." is not a supporting argument--it's what ignorant people say. It seems you missed the fact that in Blackfish a number of the trainers and staff were kept in the dark regarding a number of issues (attacks on trainers, general facts about orcas, capturing, etc.). They're just people who work in a circus, with or around wild marine animals. And part of the maltreatment of orcas includes the comparatively small tanks they're kept in. It's all quite simple. You and your sister are on the wrong side, and you'd do well to start thinking for yourself.
@shaunalee7610 жыл бұрын
Michael that aruement can also be thrown back at you. Before you become a trainer you should know where these animals actually come from and that obviously a fish bowl isnt exactly what an orca actually swims in. Ok so 20 years ago google and youtube wasnt around, but whale and dolphine trainers were. Trainers should always find out everything they can about their subjects

I've visited SeaWorld twice and I LOVED it! I appreciate the care they give to the animals, and I appreciate the opportunity to see these creatures I'd never see otherwise, but most importantly I appreciate that tourist dollars are paying for enormous research & scientific projects to further human understanding of these animals. I also really enjoyed watching the film "Blackfish" but it's extremely biased and I didn't appreciate the use of drama on easily-swayed viewers. For example, Blackfish wants you to believe the animals are violent only because the pools are too small... yet later in the film they say it's improper to breed Tilikum because his genetics indicate propensity for violence... The documentary can't make up it's mind whether the violence is caused by genetics or environment... all the film wants you to do is blame SeaWorld for everything. Additionally, they blame the killings on the animals being in captivity, and the film tries to make you think that humans have never been killed by wild killer-whales. (I guess they expect the dead victims of wild orcas to file reports, LOL.) Thirdly, all killer whales (wild AND captive) are clearly aggressive. They use violence on each other on a regular basis. Wild orcas are violent toward their own family groups (which is how they keep them in line)... much more violent than humans are to each other. Wild orcas are KILLERS. Blackfish plays on your sympathies, making you think they are peaceful ocean-swimmers, but it's false... the wild is an extremely violent place. All killer whales are born to kill. Fourthly, SeaWorld isn't forcing ANY human to swim with killer whales, and requires trainers to train for 3 years first. Employees are competing left-and-right for the chance to do it. Humans enjoy risk, and there are a lot of people who are willing to die just for the thrill of swimming with a killer animal. Don't blame that adrenaline addiction on a corporation. Dawn took the risks with the rewards. She paid the price she was WILLING to pay (her life), and reaped the rewards for YEARS before-hand. Fifthly, humans separate young animals from their parents all the time in the wild -- for food, for labor, for entertainment, for research. SeaWorld does it much less than farmers, hunters, Hollywood movie-makers and other scientists do. If you want to write legislation to destroy SeaWorld, you're hypocritical unless you ALSO write legislation to stop 4-H, to stop craigslist (where people are always selling animal babies), to stop film-making of any animals, to stop county carnivals, to stop people from raising chickens, to stop ranching, to stop sheep-herding, to stop hunting, to stop animal pounds... etc.etc.etc. I don't mind people expressing opinions, but I hope that you will seeks facts, rather than bias or emotion. Before buying into "Blackfish"'s emotional hype, you need to research the big companies that FUNDED that film. You might be surprised who you've climbed into bed with.

If SeaWorld shuts down because of you anti-caps you will be the reason over 5,000 animals died, including the whales, birds, fish, and pinnipeds. Just think about that.
@r-erin2go3806 жыл бұрын
You are correct with everything you said, except an orca has never killed a human in the wild. Blackish is propaganda. The whales can't be released into wild, they won't survive, Keiko (free Willy) didn't last very long after being released. The net cage to release them to keep them separated from the rest of the ocean won't work, there isn't even one in existence, and that will require them to be looked after and fed and visitors. Lastly 70% of orcas in the wild only survive to 10 years old. Anyways a movie like Blackish should of been done 100% facts, no edited interviews, and not biased propaganda. A true documentary shouldn't have any discrepancies at all and should be the whole truth, the entire truth! I just saw that alot of trainers came back to Sea World and they are making a new place, I don't remember the name of it.

Blackfish had some compelling footage and valid points, but it was also very one-sided and the other side of the argument was never made. There's always 2 sides to every story. And while I ultimately agree they should be kept in the wild, SeaWorld does treat their animals well. My sister works at SeaWorld and told me a lot of the trainers in that film were fired for various reasons, they didn't leave on their own.

In the first years of Orca captivity yes many of them died due to inadequate care, but what animal didn't go through the exact same situation when it was first bought into captivity? That doesn't mean I think the methods facilities used in the 80's were right, but Orca care has improved drastically since then. We have 2 Orca's in their 50's now, and I believe there's nearly 10 in their 40's. That's amazing considering Orca's have only been in captivity for around 50 years and back then the care standards weren't too great. Orca's can swim up to 100 miles in one day, but that DOES NOT mean they regularly do it or that its fun for them. They do it out of necessity. They literally have to swim that far sometimes to find food, there's many wild pods that have found places with a lot of food and consequently hardly even left the area. Whereas Orca's in captivity literally have their food dropped into their mouths, they don't have a need to swim 100 miles in one day. SeaWorld does not lie about lifespan. Each wild pod has a different lifespan, for the longest living pods its about 30 for males and 50 for females. In other pods it can be 17 for males and about 30 for females. Either way its certainly not 100 for females in the wild like some anti-cap sources would have you believe.
