Looking at the ones playing in Disneyland, I am suddenly reminded of how tiny they are, seeing them next to the loo roll. Also how light they must be by seeing Momo climb up the broom handle without it tipping! Always great to see Floki and Jethro - the gentle boys of the Foundation. Yolanda is doing well, I noticed she was extending her fingers on the windowsill. I hope her shoulder and wrist heal up fully. Dave, should you ever have time (!) maybe you could write a book about your life, including when and why you started the Foundation? I'm sure we'd all want to buy it. Also do it as an audio book so we could relax hearing your lovely voice reading it!

I hesitate to say anything because it’s obvious that everyone is trying to do their best but 1 or maybe 2 of the girls who video and speak their voice is so timid or quiet that it comes across more like mumbling. Perhaps they are intentionally trying to be quiet but even ‘closed caption’ isn’t able to pick up the right words so it becomes scrambled and a loss of information. I don’t want it to come across as criticizing because that isn’t my intention. Dave and Mark, and other male voices are very clear and the female who is doing videos, who is also speaking and asking the caregivers and volunteers questions about the babies and just talking about everything in general, her voice is really clear and very strong. I hope you don’t mind me sharing that. I really like everyone and clearly realize that everyone is trying to do their best to make these videos informative and even entertaining for the public, it’s all very appreciated. Its always a bit harder when they are older and have to go through surgery on, especially, the lower limb/hip joint that is a major weight bearing part of the anatomy. Trying to create a pseudo joint out of muscle and scar tissue can be trying, especially when its a primate. In dogs and cats and other mammals that bear weight on 4 limbs the removal of a femoral head and allowing scar tissue to form a false hip joint is nearly always successful while on primates is much less so, for the same reason its not something that would work on humans and, instead, a hip replacement would be needed if the femoral head could not be pinned back or a better cup formed surgically. I hope this time it works for Floki and its does not fail again but the real danger is just how much he seems to want to use it and the movements he is making are not equal to good range of motion, with just the right flexion and extension for where he is in the healing process. Its much different for him to be going through this being over a year old, rather then when he was a baby and would not have been as risky when he was small to be handling him and working his tendons and muscles through the correct movement he needs to strengthen them in the correct sequence. It may sound a bit cruel but often when a baby has spent a long time being unable to use a limb, first due to pain and then due to the need to periodically immobilize a joint, especially durian the age where they are learning how to use their bodies and mastering things like climbing and exploring they often adjust to the idea that they only have 3 limbs that function and don't know to try using the one that's been healing. Added to that she been denied play with others her age where she would see all 4 limbs being used. Of course the biggest worry is that a dislocated shoulder can be frozen and not ever gain its full mobility, and even when you are not immobilizing it, she might just be continuing to hold it in that position and not get as much use of it as she should. One technique they we have had to employ once its determined that the dislocation has been put back in place and the joint is stable is to immobilize the good side at least for short periods of time forcing her to weight bare on that side and build up her strength as well as working out range of motion for her, with her good side immobilized she would have to use the weaker side to reach and stretch to get food, steady herself and so on. Nerve damage might not be a hinderance to her, except for any fine motor control she might need in the one hand and having a good hand to do that sort of fine manipulation is probably all she needs. Since he is occasionally does weight bare she probably does have some gross motor control and therefore some working nerve impulse or she would just have it hang and get in her way rather than keeping it out of the way of her other limbs. Often with animals who can not really under stand verbal instructions on how to exercise a body part of work on using it the only real way to get them to do what would be natural repetitive motion and weight bearing to strength that part, is to remove the ability for the opposite limb to do all the work.

What ranking is Pam? If Pam was going to get three babies, wouldn't you hope that Pam was high ranking? Let me rephrase my question. Wouldn't a foster mom who is high ranking do better with the multiple babies? I would think that it would be a harder life on a foster mom who is low ranking and has multiple babies.
@VervetMonkey2 жыл бұрын
the sad part is high ranking females will just take the baby if they wanted it, so by using the low ranking females, there will be more moms per baby

Johnny I wouldv'e thought the same thing about moms of multiples, but I've seen a couple interesting situations among the Hong Kong rhesus macaques over the past few years and both were low ranking moms (two isn't enough to draw any conclusions so I'm not suggesting that only low ranking moms raise multiples, especially since we don't know how the two moms came to raise two babies at once. JW films a mom called Ameia who is extremely low ranking (the very lowest I believe), but a couple of years ago soon after she gave birth to a boy she adopted another baby boy too. As far as I know, nobody knows how this came to be, don't know who his mom was or how Ameia came to adopt him. There are two videographers in Honk Kong who film the monkeys as a hobby so the vast majority of monkey life happens out of human sight. Despite her low status (and she has some physical deformaties), she is a fantastic mom and she worked very hard to keep two lively babies/toddlers safe and well fed. It helps that the regular human feeders understand monkey politics very well and found ways to get her plenty of extra food safely (because higher ranking females would always steal her food, run her off, etc, but Ameia is experienced and has gotten smart about how to avoid trouble). The other mom seen raising two babies was even more surprising. She was called Puppy Mom (don't ask me why, I DK) and she was also low ranking and very old, too old to have given birth but somehow she raised two babies. And she produced milk for them! This was a few years back and she's not seen/filmed very often, but the thinking was that she had maybe been 'adopting" a baby often enough since she was too old to give birth that her milk production hadn't shut down. I don't think the Hong Kong monkeys are comparable to the vervets here because those moms give birth vs. the vervets here adopt/foster. Although high ranking moms can take a baby they want from a low ranker in the wild, it's very rare from what I've seen. (The only and closest situation I've seen over the last 5 years or so is this year, there's a grandmother that keeps taking her daughter's baby and even nurses it too. They're kind of a dysfunctional family, the grandmother is much more dominant than the daughter, who is a new mom and doesn't know how to deal with the situation). Anyway, it makes sense to me that it would be easier for high ranking vervet moms here to take babies they wanted, since there has been only a brief bonding period when a foster mom takes her new charge out into the troop and of course they don't have a biological connection. I just thought of one other multiples situation, a few years ago the matriarch of a snow monkey troop in Japan raised twins. I don't remember if she gave birth to twins, or just one of the babies and either took another baby from a lower ranking mom or if there was an orphaned baby. Anyway, definitely a very high ranking mom in that case. There are just so many interesting situations amongst all of our primate cousins. Like us, each individual is unique with different personalities and dispositions and it's obvious starting with the babies. For every rule, there are exceptions it would seem. Which reminds me, I loved hearing about Jethro and there are three adult males in Hong Kong I can think of who love babies and children and it's so heartwarming to see them caring for them, carrying them, grooming, protecting them, and one even shares food (super rare!).
