In this video, I explore using baby powder as a resist on the gel plate. Using baby powder on the gel plate gives some great gel print textures that are not attainable any other way. The baby poder resist technique gives some wonderful organic gel plate textures that would be great for making your own collage material. Follow along as I explore the baby powder resist technique.
Jennifer Akkermans is a mixed media visual artist, specializing in Intuitive Printmaking using acrylic paints on a gel plate. My boys and I are doing print making for art this year. As we watched some technique videos today one of them asked about using dirt or getting a dirt texture. So I am making sure to show this to him.

Awesome work, & very intriguing technique- I might have to give this a try sooner or later! Also, love the song! Beautiful; the beginning reminded me of Sam Gendel’s Satin Doll (the sax on songs like Glide Mode has a similar sedate, dreamy vibe, but this track does pick up & give a bit more of a traditional sound after the horns come in, whereas Sam Gendel’s Satin Doll is like jazz on dissociatives, but I like both sounds).

I’m fascinated with this technique. Are you concerned about the opacity of the paint? These are beautiful! ❤
@JenniferAkkermans
@JenniferAkkermans Жыл бұрын
No, you can use both opaque and transparent. I would do some experiments with the paints/ color combinations you want to use to make sure they don't turn into mud if you want, but quite honestly, part of the fun of gel printing is the unexpected way things combine. Don't forget - you can always print more on top of anything you don't like. And, thank you! ☺

@@JenniferAkkermans was your baby powder corn starch or talc? Mine was a disaster , I’m wondering if it makes a difference.

@@JenniferAkkermans I got a little too heavy handed with it. So I decided to blow some off. It was mostly white. By the 4th pull everything was dry and caked to the plate. The cornstarch was melting into the layers of paint. Pull #6 was just a narrow band of yellow. I was going to call it a day and clean it off but I decided it was too much paint to waste. I put down a thin coat of off white and put my paper down. I wanted it to dry completely. I forgot about it and went back to it in the morning. I used printer paper and everything pulled off of the plate. In my 10 yrs of gelli printing it is one of my best yet.

@@evypetre949 Sounds like you need to spend more time playing with it! And yes, a light touch is better. I found I got a lot stuck to the plate too, but it would sometimes come off in later prints, which added a lot of interest. After I am done printing with baby powder, I do clean my plate to get all those extra bits off.

How do you clean all the buildup off the plate?
@JenniferAkkermans
@JenniferAkkermans 6 ай бұрын
Thank you for your question! There are a few things you can do - you can do what's called a pick up print - brayer out a thin layer of paint, put your paper on top, burnish it with your hands, and then leave it to completely dry before you pull it off (ie, overnight). Or you could clean your plate with wet wipes or baby/ mineral oil. It takes some wiping, but the dried paint does come off well. If you do it this way, I would recommend doing a quick clean up print to get the last bits of paint off your plate before you really get into making proper artwork again. Happy printing!
