Hi, thanks for showing an interest and watching my video on quail. Yes, I will try and post a video of my cage brooder but I don't have any chicks to show currently (they don't lay in winter). I will check and see if I have an old video and if it's decent quality I'll upload it for you. Cheers, Mark

G'day mate, I'm just using some sugar cane mulch on the floor with some non slip kitchen mat and paper towel underneath.

Don't feel bad about it JM it's always hard to keep naturally hatched quail alive often they hatch premature - you did your best. The best way to go is by collecting the eggs and using an incubator and brooder that way the chicks have the best chance of a full development in a controlled environment.

Yeah, good question Dubsky because I couldn't find a portable dimmer switch like this here in Australia. So, I searched and found a place in New Zealand which sells them called "Greenhand Eco Products" got 2 rated at 300 watts (for large globes). If you can't find an appropriate dimmer where you are just to a Google search and use their online international store . I found this setup much cheaper than buying the kit from a specialist incubation dealer some online prices are a rip off.

Hi Jim, nice to hear from you :) Natural hatchings are quite common with quail unfortunately quail are awful parents and the young chicks really do need help in the first 3 - 4 weeks to survive. If I get natural hatchings in my quail pen, I remove them and put them in a brooder (like the example in the vid) otherwise their chance of survival is poor. In the brooder environment survival rates are very high.

Looking back at this very old video of yours, this is an example of the trope we call "Early Installment Weirdness". You have come quite a long way indeed. I wouldn't mind some jaunty saloon music in your newer videos, though.

No probs JM, incubators and brooders are different. An egg shouldn't be hatched in a brooder setup due to the inconsistent temp. An incubator is enclosed and usually has an egg turner to rotate the eggs the temp is constant. A brooder is for chicks after hatching (usually for about 3-4 weeks) & the temp is slowly reduced weekly to get the chicks used to normal outside temps. Hope this helps. Please consider joining our forum just Google "Self Sufficient Culture" I'd like to chat more :)

Hi James, I have Jap quail (coturnix) and they are really bad parents and are unlikely to sit on the eggs for incubation - so the best way is to incubate artificially. I don't have any King but I may consider keeping California quail one day. Cheers.

@Silkymits2000 I'd like to know more about your grub kit actually. When I find grubs, spiders, and bugs naturally around the property I feed them to my quail. Quail do best on a high protein diet (higher than chickens) so your bug kit is a great idea. You will need to give them a commercial feed also and I use a "game bird feeder" from Laucke it's very high in protein but turkey feed will also do the job nicely especially if you are supplementing with bugs. Bug feeding vid? :)

Hi James, I live in Bellmere (near Brisbane). I'd have no problems selling you quail but you'd be better off buying locally. Checkout your local area, pet stores, or even online (ChookNet, Backyard Poultry etc) and you should be able to find a local seller. If you are going to buy eggs, try and wait for spring as the cold weather can cause low hatch rates in quail (for incubation). Any other Q's just ask. Good luck!

Hey Mark, I had no luck with the baby button quails. Both died, I place them in a "hospital cage" i have for my finches, where the temperatura was constant at 89-90 degrees F. (32-34 Celcius) but those things are too tiny. Place a matt, then news paper and then a layer of food (which i think is purina-soy mix) in pwder and some other small pieces, and a layer or hay, and a water container with some pebbles so they dont drown .but I dont know what happened to them, i never saw them eating.

I was interested in introducing California Quail into our farmhouse garden, having just discovered we have Brown Quail. I see you don't raise California quails, but do you think hatchlings raised by humans be more inclined to stay in our garden and environs uncaged? Our experience with ducklings is that they bond to the first living thing they see.

(sorry mark, I hit "post" in error) As I said, 4 of them died in the finch aviary where I have them. Today another clutch is starting to hatch. Is it better to have them the way you have or just leave them in the aviary? The clutch before I was telling you about was the first one of the pair. the 4 babies died because is was the first clutch of the parents? o babies have more chances of survival in a box? hope you can reply soon. :o) Good day Cheers

Hi Mark, I am trying to track down some King Quail fertile eggs. Do you have any of those? My daughter wants to put them into her new incubator. We do a similar thing for a brooder as you did. The quails that we have at the moment have babies and are not interested in laying.

Hi there, did you use this brooder to incubate your eggs? I wondered this because you can monitor and maintain the temps so closely. Great brooder by the way, cheers
@Selfsufficientme8 жыл бұрын
+John Rossiter Thanks and no I didn't, but yes it's not a bad idea actually and it wouldn't be very difficult to turn any container into an incubator these days with an off-the-shelf heating element and thermostat pack. You'd have to consider how to regulate humidity though in such an open or large area otherwise during the egg incubation phase it could get too dry but if the humidity was regulated correctly then I can't see why a container like this couldn't act as the incubator, hatchery, and brooder all in one! Cheers :)

@Selfsufficientme9 жыл бұрын
Mychal Golavar Sorry mate, this reply is probably way too late... If you can't get hold of game bird raising feed for chicks then you could try standard feed grounded up with a little soy meal added to bump up the protein. Or, if you don't have commercial feed then small worms or insects would work for a few weeks until it is big enough to eat normal feed. Cheers :)

Ron Grey Hi Ron, sometimes I do scatter a little feed around because on rare occasions newly hatched quail can need extra encouragement to eat so I find if a little feed is scattered around similar to nature in the wild (rather than only in the feeder) they scratch around and find it then they soon realise visiting the feeder is easier! Cheers :)

Hi, my female quail has the inside of the behind coming out, bloody too, I thought it was feed, but they eat wild bird food for quail, 20 percent protein. she is in the cage with one male, alone. Any ideas what that could be?
@Selfsufficientme9 жыл бұрын
Hi, yes I have seen this before and it can happen if the bird is handled a little too heavily and squeezed (by accident) but it seems to also happy rarely for no reason (perhaps it was egg laying gone wrong or stress from other birds etc) but often it will retract by itself overtime (in a few days) and the quail will recover. I would isolate the bird if possible in her own small area or a cage with food and water for a few days to see if she improves. I hope it goes well.

Is brooder box a must? Can babies survive without brooder box
@Selfsufficientme8 жыл бұрын
+Sara Chen It doesn't necessarily need to be a box but after hatching the chicks do need to be brooded for about 3-4 weeks with some sort of heat source until they get their proper feathers otherwise they'll probably die unless ambient temperatures are steady around 36C (96.8F). Cheers :)

Please help, we hatched 10 quail eggs but only 2 remain. The cause of death is unknown, They just keep dying. Any help?
@Selfsufficientme9 жыл бұрын
abi1231000 Hi, sorry to hear about your quail loss... Although quail can suffer from diseases It's unlikely they are dying from any introduced virus etc but it is possible. The most common cause of death after hatching is the brooding temperature being set to high or too low. Sometimes, the feed is the cause as quail chicks can be a little fussy especially if the feed granules are a little too large (blending a little feed in a food processor can reduce the size). However, it's difficult for me to diagnose the exact problem without more information but try to ensure the temp is correct, the quail are eating and drinking, and the egg stock is good without too much inbreeding.
@abi12310009 жыл бұрын
Self Sufficient Me Sorry for the late reply but thank you very much for your response. Unfortunately, only one out of the two managed to survive and has gotten pretty big. I will take into consideration what you have advised for the future and hopefully, I will be more successful next time round :)
