I've now used a 20 gallon long aquarium with a 100W heat lamp as a brooder and have had much success with this set up.

I have put some serious thought into getting a Dale’s Quails brooder ever since my little brother got one. I currently brood my quail in my house… I haven’t been brave enough to brood them outside and we don’t have a garage/barn for it. But I LOVE the design! p.s. the dog barking doesn’t bother me… can’t control the neighbors’ animals 🤷🏽♀️ thanks for taking the time to put this video together!

When I talked to Dale he said he designs all of the cages and brooders to fit pans available on Chewy. Loretta’s small brooder uses a standard 24” rabbit cage pan. My brooders are all in the house.
@happymrsbass2 жыл бұрын
@@jessemills2415 oh, that’s good to know! I can snag a 24” rabbit pan from TSC easily. Thanks for that tip!

Thanks for hanging in there through the dog barking. I used to brood in my house as well and still do from time to time so I understand your predicament.
@jessemills24152 жыл бұрын
I don’t get why everyone is so upset by the dog barking! That’s what dogs do, have the time you can’t get them to stop when it’s your dog, much less the neighbors!

I love my medium size brooder, that price included shipping. It'll hold 70 chicks and I even use it as a grow out for the boys between hatches. It's a great unit.
@Slightlyrednecked Жыл бұрын
I agree, works very well for me too.

You’ll never go back to tubs! I built wire bottom brooders this summer, and love them!! So much easier to clean, and no poop balls on the feet. Of course mine don’t come close to looking as good as Dale’s! I have one of his small brooders my daughter bought at Quailcon.

done is as good as perfect in my book. It is just a quail brooder and I am sure that they don't really care how good it looks. :)

I now use a LG converted Guinea pig cage(floor & sides with 1/2-1/2 hardware cloth) that fits in very lg 2 1/2'' by 4' tote. I place hay/ straw in bottom tote, with 2 shallow coffee cans to keep wire of bottom. I will lift cage out; dump matured straw in compost pile; refill & put birds back: couple minutes to do. their in this till feathered: then to my Quail tractor.

Sounds like you have a nice set up.

I have this brooder. Once the chicks can fly, they will escape. So putting in food or water, birds will get out. I think it would be better with 4 doors. It is also difficult to clean around the edges. Gives them plenty of room though.

I like that it has legs on it and don't have to bend to ground all time,but afraid the hinges won't last long to how the doors open and hang,maybe I will try to make one like this!Other thing though about being on ground might keeps birds warmer though when on ground,instead of air coming up threw bottom.

Good thoughts. So far I am not having any issues keeping it warm enough.

If you sides came with a hole, you can use a heater plate, which I Iike. I had mine outside and the sides warped, need to fix those this winter.

That is what the holes are for. I meant to say that in the video actually. Luckily the sides should be fairly easy to replace.

Quick question hope u can help. Im in southern ca. First year raising quail. I noticed My quails are slowing down in egg production im thinking its cuz of season changing. I have about 40 newly hatched quails i think will be my egg producers for next year. Shud i kill off my quails at end of season and keep my younger quails to replace my older quails (about 4-5 month old) If my older birds are laying less eggs in fall and winter i would save on feed and time feeding and cleaning. What are your thoughts.
@Slightlyrednecked2 жыл бұрын
Seems like you have a pretty good plan there. If it were me, I would go ahead and process my older birds and keep the newer ones to be the future breeders. Like you said, save on feed costs over the winter. You can also add external lights to get the amount of "daylight" up to 14 hours a day to keep them laying all winter long if you want to.

How many adult quail could you use this for?

This really isn't a good cage for adult quail. But you can figure about 1 square foot of floor space per bird to figure that out. Hope that helps.
