This is two very different encounters with the ravens. It's a little long for the general You Tube audience but for those truly interested in the birds it's kind of a fun one. The first encounter is the "air show" I look forward to every year. Dad hangs out with me and the kids are flipping, flying and screaming all up and down the cliffs. I apologize for the wind noise but it is the fact it is so windy that they put on such a great show!
The second, I go down and I can't find them anywhere on the beach or anywhere else in their area. I suspect they are back in the canyon across Pacific Coast Hwy. I wait for hours, and just end up with a real quick fly by after sunset (which is unusual cause they are almost always home before or at least by sunset.)
The two late afternoon sessions are almost the opposite, but that is what one should expect when dealing with ravens. Hope you enjoy them!

I started clapping & cheering when my Raven friends dive. Now they dive when they see me because they know I like it. I’ve been feeding them for several years in the redwoods behind my house. Sitting in the redwoods is like a cathedral then suddenly it’s a cathedral full of ravens! Heaven! Recently I starting talking to a breeding pair of Black Vultures when they were overhead. (I don’t feed them.) This morning there were 10 buzzards flying in circles 30 feet over my head! I told them they were premature as I don’t have any major illnesses. It was a wonderful moment. Vultures! Who knew!

Love to watch your shares! I have a crow-couple in my front yard, one of them has one single white wingfeather. Now they have a young that took the white to the next level. Perfectly even spread white wingfeathers on both sides. I named him/her Orka. It's a daily joy to watch this special one grow up😍

i’m so jealous i’ve been observing crows for years... no ravens in garden grove i have a group that comes most mornings to my porch for peanuts i still can’t identify individuals unless they are unique in some way there is a pair that’s been coming for the past three years; one has a lame foot and the other has an ankle tag

Yeah, that's the thing people here don't understand, and they think I'm "bigoted" against crows. With my ravens there's two, just in one fairly defined area. With the crows, there so many of them, unless there's a distinct characteristic (I have one completely missing a foot I call her peg leg and because of that I've been able to track her for 5 years now) they are far more difficult to get to know. I have hundreds of crows around my house most every day, but they roost many miles away and for the most part I can't be sure it's the same group everyday. Some I know it's the same but the majority I have no way to tell! But notice a few minutes into the video, when I'm out on the point, there's a guy standing in the distance and shooting pictures of the ravens with his phone. They are curious at this stage and will show off for anyone, "when they want to" ... i.e. you just have to be there at the right time! There are numerous families along the coast between Newport and Dana Point. The Montage (Laguna) and Ritz Carlton (Laguna Niguel) are nice places for day visits!

Wonderful video...loved watching their skills at flying. I don't get a lot of wind in my area but when it does show up, the ravens always start flying around in it and playing. Mine mostly just "hang out" around this area and my favorite thing is observing their communications and behavior skills. Like you said , they are unpredictable..thought they had left but it was a "day vacation" somewhere then back every day as usual. Arrive around 8 or 9 am, stay a couple of hours, return around 3 pm (they know I feed my livestock 2 x day, AM & PM). The mated pair knows me well and talks and chatters to me, sometimes following along on the ground behind me observing what I'm doing (but don't turn around and give eye contact...gone!) ha I have to use lots of listening to sounds to understand them so I can tell what's going on. Tone is very important in communication between them and tells re alert, content, etc. I had the mated pair and 3 babies, however, this week I see now there are only 2 babies...sad, one missing. Lots of play in the yard and pastures, parents teaching how to cache their food, difference between doing it where my dogs can get it, then where it is safe. Parents are constantly giving them cues and lessons, so I can see the offspring will acquire whatever the parents have and give to them..I think that is why mine are so different than your's on the coast... more people in your area, different terrain to teach dangers and this establishes their base behaviors. This year I had a "crow" show for the first time ever... very strange, because it was always following the mated pair, even before babies arrived, always feed right after and left back behind following them. I kinda thought it was thinking it was a raven, ha. Today it showed up (right after the ravens fed) and in came a 2nd crow, so found a friend.. I just hope it doesn't go get a "flock" of crows from what you said about them. ha These still follow the ravens also... weird, and the ravens allow it, even sometimes eating side by side. Lots more stories but this is probably enough to bore most today. Thank you for sharing your video so I can study the coastal behaviors and skills along with mine rural foothills/mountain ravens.

@@theravendiaries New Hampshire. In our rural community crows and ravens pal around together. At least they do in my yard. The only exception occurs during nesting season. From, say, late March till the end of summer, they both know to steer clear of one another. Come Fall, they're friends again. :-)

theravendiaries , hello, I live in the San Juan Islands in Northwestern Washington State. They’ve never left me a specific “gift” like some people have mentioned, but they give me the gift of JOY each time they fly thru and caw,chip,chirp,or cackle! They indeed have talked back when I chirp to them, and they fly thru the property each day to see what we’re up to. We have dogs and the ravens have been known to send the pups into a frenzy! Thanks for bringing to light the joys of these delightful birds! Claudia

I should send you a photo....... about 6-8 years ago kayaking, and six Orcas came up and passed us in our kayaks, this one female came very close to me(her wake rocked my 17ft boat) and then she looked me right in the eye! It was a blessing from nature for sure. Corvids rule! Claudia

: ) yes a lot of people say that, and please not to burst your bubble Suzane but on the other hand, they dig in the dirt and eat bugs ... and then there's the other stuff they eat ... I'm kinda content being able to sit down with some fresh grilled lamb chops smothered in garlic and herbs de provence, some fresh made tortellini with fried arugula and sheep's milk romano cheese, topped with a fresh tomato concasse, and an olive tapenade. Oh and chocolate mousse for dessert! We can't fly BUT we can appreciate they can, and I can appreciate what I get to eat and and although the life of a raven looks fun, I wonder, are they able to actually appreciate what we see them doing? I think that "appreciation" bit is more what separates humans from animals more than just about anything else. We can and if we take the time - we get to - appreciate what they do, and how they do it! I'm thinking most of what they do is more by "instinct." Funny how almost all animals fit a very specific and specialized niche. Is it magic, or something else? Now, the living at Crystal Cove bit, I'm there with ya!

@@theravendiaries Beautifully said! I appreciate that you bring us to the experience of seeing the Ravens so close up. Recently you have been able to capture them even closer, so cool! Did you get new equipment or are they simply allowing you to get closer. They are so beautiful. Thank you. I love your meal choices, sounds like you enjoy cooking too. I wrote to you a few years ago, not sure if you remember. I'm in Ontario, Canada. I've been feeding the crows in the winter since I live here, about 7 winters. I started with peanut butter toast, then I added variations, CheeseWhiz, paté, egg fried toast, and once, leftover mashed potatoes. It was funny to see the crow with a ring of potato around its beak. lolol There were always 2 of them, with a spring baby or two most years. They are very protective of the food I give them, and should one of the Ravens from the farm across the highway try to take the food, they fight them off immediately. This spring, I noticed that there are 6 crows flying around together. Do you think that they started a group like they do in the city? I'm in flat farmland, so they are not used to people. Since the unfortunate event of this year, I've been home most days and get to see how much they hang around the house. I also enjoy the golden finches, sparrows, grackles, cow birds, robins, swallows, red wing blackbirds. Suzane

Most the birds I work with are in protected California State park so. NO, I do not had feed these birds. I don't hand feed the ones I meet in National Parks either. However, I am exposed to many ravens in a number of different situations who are not protected or who are "rescues in rehab" and so I am able to intact with those birds in a completely different way.

How can you make a raven friendly and less fearful. Is there a way without raising it from the nest ?
@theravendiaries
@theravendiaries 4 жыл бұрын
Time and patience. Established raven couples tend to stay in the same area year after year. It's also a game of subtly letting them know you are interested in them without paying too much attention to them, which will scare them off. (Perhaps dating is somewhat similar?) It took me a couple of years, but I was in the area anyway so over time they saw me often enough and knew I was not there to disturb them. I also move roadkill off the roads, and I point out potential food sources for them. I have a ridiculous video called "How to Make friends with Wild Ravens" that became popular where I did a very poor job demonstrating this, but it really needs to be redone cause it isn't thorough enough and it falls short on things like handling dead animals and such. Now they may have already know about some of these "finds", but over time I think they actually realized I knew what they wanted and was willing to show them?

@@theravendiaries Many thanks for answering. Any other tips about being 'aluring' ? (already know peanut butter and dabs of fat on dry bread is a big hit with them). Meanwhile I'll keep a bag in my trunk and exploit 'small oad kills' but the flies they attrackare a problem afterwards . Appreciate the point you made about not being too available. Have noted on days I don't put goodies out they seem to 'cry' more often when I do go out in the yard. Playing 'hard to get' might be a cross-amimalistic truth. : )
