Baby Robins Leave the Nest!!

Their parents have worked around the clock getting these three babies ready for this day. The first two young ones went so quickly that I just missed their flight but, the last one lingered in the nest for about half an hour, enjoying the space and contemplating whether or not this was really the only way out. From a safe distance, I got the whole drama on tape.
Robins are such amazing parents. Mom and Dad take turns finding and bringing food home, watching over the little ones, and keeping the nest clean. Their job continues now as the babies practise their flying and learn to become more independent. The nest will remain empty, for once they leave, the whole family moves on and doesn't come back to the nest, not even for a visit.

Update - our four left the nest yesterday...it’s a bittersweet moment when they go, after having watched them for ~2 months, it’s kinda sad to watch them leave, but also very exciting to see them take flight! Your video was so well done, it truly captures the essence of the moment! Beautiful job again on your capturing it for other! Take care!

A few years back I found a baby robin on the ground actually I found two of them. I thought they were both dead but when I threw them in a bag And when i was headed to the dumpster i heard chirping So then I Quickly took them both out of the bag. One of them actually died from the fall but the other lived, I took care of the baby, put it in a heated area and fed it tuna. Then it was at this stage where they usually leave the nest so I waited till i think it could care for itself but it flew near me every morning and it would let me hold it and stuff. so then winter came and it went away i was hoping it would come next year and it did! and it remembered me. and i havent seen him yet this year im kinda nervous but i guess it found a better spot to live. These guys are amazing

@@actualfootage they didn't go yesterday - maybe due to heavy rain - but they leapt this morning. The parents missed the second one go and came back panicking and looking everywhere. Thank you, thank you, thank you for this video. I have had a robin building a nest and nursing two babies for quite a while on my back porch light (just like the one in the video). However, we have two big dogs. I told my husband and daughter not to let the dogs into the backyard, because the babies would be leaving the nest soon. I came home this afternoon to two dogs in the backyard and no babies in the nest. I was worried sick that the babies stay on the ground for a while and that the dogs would get them. This video gave me comfort that they are able to fly away to the branch of the nearest tree and get quickly out of harms way. The mother bird was certainly aware of the dangers over the last couple months since one of my dogs chased her on a couple occasions when she was on the ground getting worms. I don't see any trace of her or the two babies, so seeing this video gives me confidence that the baby birds are safely out of the backyard and enjoying their new stage of life!

Great video! At the moment, there are 4 robin nestlings on top of one of the beams at my patio. I've been watching them since the 26th of May. The nestlings look like those in the video now so it's just a matter of days before they fly. The momma robin used to fly away when I got near, usually when I was rolling the lawn mower around or opening the fence gate but now, she doesn't even mind when I walk through. I've done everything I could to protect the robins since they took residence at my property. I've installed motion floodlights and pest repellers to deter the raccoons and even talked to my neighbor about keeping her cats indoor just until the birds fly away. Even though they haven't left yet, it feels good to know I've done my part to keep the babies safe and to grow big enough to fly. Go little babies, fly and be free!

@@actualfootage I've been looking. I saw the parents near the nest twice, but they didn't seem to know where the babies were. I felt sad. I hope the babies are ok. The vinca under the nest is very thick. In one of my last photos (take from my laundry room window) at least one of the babies looked like it was thinking about jumping out of the nest. Robins are such a successful species. So I'm hoping the babies are ok.

Those babies that left the nest still have to be fed by momma robin! They haven't learned how to forage for foods. That takes a few more days. The fledglings will remain in the area not too far from the nest, and the momma has to feed each of them, and will sometimes forage right near them.

I have watched this process on my own balcony. I remember the first day when I thought the wind had blown this dead grass up on my balcony deck. Then I looked up and noticed some hanging from the light. At first I was going to take it down and not let the nest be built, but then I changed my mind. Wanted to see how the whole thing went. I was excited to see the nest with its nearly perfect round shape, then the eggs (4) came, then they all hatched and changed so fast in those 2 weeks!

nice video. I just located it as I have 4 baby robins that hatched late last week and I was curious how long before they fly off. Nest is sitting atop a section of a 24 in log in the log cabin we live in....deck is covered by roof but was shocked the high winds we get didn't blow it off. Mother appears young herself but wonderful care with the partner of these 4 babies so far. I realized sitting outside early morning a few weeks ago a nest was being built. I was fortunate to have and make the time from 6-11 a.m. to see her making the nest/stomping the inside down and dipping prairie grass into muddy soil to hold it together. What a memory! Hope like you I can see them fly away but your video is the next best thing!

One day 2 were gone and the third had a harder time leaving the nest. I knew one day at lunch he would be gone too and I wished it well. I got home from work and it was gone I was so happy. Until I walked around with my dogs to the other side and it hoped out and my dogs got it. I thought I saved it but it died in my arms. I was so sad that this was this poor babies end. I was watching this video to see if this is how they fly out by falling down first. Momma had it safely tucked in on a gutter behind a lavender bush. I am very heartbroken this baby died did not tast it's first flight?

The first time I saw it I was stunned. I thought the parent was removing the downy feathers or something to help them fly better. But, yeah, that's how they keep their nests clean. Not so much the walls and other nearby objects, though, when they fly away with it in their mouths and let it go. We have a sign on our mailbox that says "No Drop-offs" but it doesn't help, lol.

@actualfootage that's funny. My 12 y.o. actually posted that after I pointed it out to him. We had a mom build her nest on the front porch light so we were anxious for the babies to leave so we could remove the nest and clean all the poop up. Mom has happily moved on and found a more agreeable place to nest.

It's real - empty nest syndrome! I felt sadness too after these birds left.

All our robins have left their nests, only one died. We think he got confused being near machinery and did not know which way to leave and he died, we did not find him until he was expired, rip. We have a family of robins that return each year and this was the only dead one for more than a decade as far as we know at least til they fly. Our first robin came over 10 years ago. We did not have robins before that due to cold temps, over time they get white age spots so you can recognize them.

That's amazing, only one in ten years! I realized the year after I made this video-the year after we moved into this house-that they do like to come back year after year. Unfortunately, by then, we'd changed up our light stand, where they'd made their nest. They attempted a nest in a cedar out front, but it was too low to the ground and the eggs didn't make it to hatch. I was sad for the parents because it seemed they were confused, and it made me wonder how long they'd been making their nest on that lamp stand for.

Thanks for sharing the video. Having raised pet birds for many years, I watch when wild birds hatch as well. Understanding the life cycle, I have a question. I have been following 3 baby robins from hatching to flight (yesterday). The total timeframe from birth to flight in my experience has always been 12-14 days, and these were no exception. So imagine my surprise with your "Day 8" marker. Do you think you might be off by a week? Or were these three baby robins avian prodigies?
