In the mid 1980s. I was privileged to stay a few days with a priest's old sister in a stone cottage that she built by hand near a lake. There were hummingbirds visiting all the time. Of course, I did not have zoom lens to take proper photos but those images remain in my heart.

I saves a hummingbird from my cat once . I happen to go out back rigjt in time . My cat had just caught it one second before I noticed the bird was in her mouth and I stomped my foot down as hard as I could yelling at the same time and startling my cat she dropped the humming bird . So I picked it up into my hands and the bird had latched both claws/feet hold its long beak . Really wierd. So I carefully peeled off each claw from its beak and was checking it out close didn't appear to be injured at all just in shock and really scared so I gently put my hands up and down saying to the hummingbird go little guy go go and next thing I know it took off and flew away .. so awesome. . For me that was a real treat that I got to hold a hummingbird in the palm of my hands as it flew way saving it .. that's somthing that not very many people get to experience in there lifetime .. . It will never happen again.in my lifetime so I was pretty happy .. Anyway just thought I would share that with you ...Sorry if I was rambling on there a bit ..

So glad you were able to save the little guy. My wife saved a pair of hummers once. They were a pair of Anna's hummers--a male and a female. They flew into a window, and fell to the ground. My wife thought they were dead. She picked them up, and started stroking their backs with her finger, VERY gently. They seemed to recover fairly quickly. The female took off first, followed by the male a couple minutes later.

Cat's saliva is deadly to hummingbirds so regardless if it looked fine and flew away it most likely did not live. The right thing to do would have been to contact your local bird sanctuary to have it treated. I am not trying to be a downer but I do feel the need to let people know so maybe the next little birdie will live.

Simply amazing! What an awesome privilege you had to have the hummingbirds nest in your yard. Your description hits home with me. I made the mistake once of getting too close to a Cardinal nest. They were nesting only head high in a cedar tree in our yard. I had quietly observed them several times when they were very tiny. While the mother was away from the nest, I got a few peeks. They weren't quite ready to fly when I thought I would try to see them again. When I slowly approached the nest, and before I could even see them, they all jumped out. I was horrified that I caused this. They could fly but not very far. They saw me as a predator and figured they would be safer on the run. I said a prayer and hoped for the best. Mom and Dad continued to feed them in the tree limbs, so they could have survived. I vowed to never again walk close to the nest of older baby birds. Thanks for sharing!

Aw, like children.... we live and learn from our experiences. It is sometimes difficult to keep away from the birds when we are fascinated by them. Their eggs, mottled colours.... nestled in meticulously woven twigs and sap. Then their cute little beaks rising up to eat some bugs from mommy or daddy bird. Incredible to behold.

Although you did not know about getting too close ---your filming was beautiful. Very glad the Humming bird babies fledged and that all turned out well in that they were never left by their mother. Despite your novice level of knowledge you gave many people a chance to see the beauty of these creatures. A great video. I lived on the north coast of British Columbia in a mountain community on the coast. Very isolated. We had large feeders. In summer we would have 15 birds at each feeder. Some feeding and some waiting to feed. Very colourful. These creatures must migrate thousand of kilometers each year to escape our winter.

Wow Those baby hummingbirds really trusted you too. At around 6:00 the second one to Fledge preened it's self in front of you. When a bird preens itself in your presence that is the ultimate sign of trust and being at ease. :-)

Wow! That is so cool. I never knew this. That's amazing!! Unfortunately, I had turned the camera off because the bird had been hovering there for awhile, in front of me, seemingly not doing anything, and just as I turned it off, it flew away, so I was unable to actually capture it's first flight, on film. But I was there, and saw it. ;-) How do you know this about the bird preening in front of you?

I've had many different kinds of pet birds for many years. I learned this about preening through my research that I did in order take good care of my pet birds. Also I'm forever a "student" of wild birds outside. Now you may see wild birds outside that do preening but you will never see a wild bird preen itself when it's just inches away from you. Not unless it trusts you completely, which rarely happens. If a wild bird ends up too close to a human being you will notice just about everything in its body language EXCEPT for preening :-). They may squawk and flap their wings and try to get away, they may stiffen up like a board, but they certainly don't relax and preen. But, these little guys had been seeing you probably daily for their entire short lives. So they knew you meant them zero harm. They trusted you completely. :-)

Not trying to be a nay sayer but this simply is not true. Birds instinctively preen...and do so quite often. Most of a birds day is consumed with foraging,preening,&sleeping..most of the time in that exact order. So if you spend enough time around a bird,they will preen,whether the trust is there or not. I'm talking only in terms of birds that don't have the choice of fleeing..like a [caged] pet bird or like these lil tiny flappers that didnt really have the option to go anywhere as they [obviously] couldn't fly yet.

Thank you for the very nice video. I love humming birds and I make sure there is food outside for them and I love watching them feed. I love how the male will let the females eat but other males are not allowed. And I think its so cute. They are gods little angles well I think of that about all birds. In the bible it says that birds are his favorite and I can see why. They way they can fly the way a lot of them stay with the same mate and they way they take care of there young. I wish I could fly just like they can. But I couldn't or wouldn't like to be out in the cold and rain or the snow or the wind. SO I give them there due and I respect them and I make sure to be carful what I put out so I am not hurting the birds. Anyways thanks you so much I have always wanted to see how the young grow up and now I got to see it for the first time. You did a wonderful job on getting pictures and videos of them. Do you feed them???? And were they up in y7your tree??? Man hummingbirds are so beautiful and small and its so amazing on how fast they fly and I can not believe you were lucky to get to see it all unfold in front of you. That is a gift case I have yet to see a hummingbirds nest. And I do not think I will ever see one. Do they use the same nest year after year or do they build a new one???

Hello Crystal. Thank you for your comment. I was lucky enough to find this nest just outside my window. I stood on a window ledge to be able to film them, but learned afterwards that it is not okay to film as close to the birds as I did. This is my first film, and when I began photographing the birds, I had no idea I'd eventually make a film. I made some mistakes, so please read the description below the video to learn corrected information about the birds that I learned after making the film. I did not feed the babies. That is Mama's job. I did not have a feeder nearby, either. I have learned that in some cases the Mama will come back and reuse the nest again, but I don't know how common that is. In my case, once the birds fledged, no one ever returned to the nest. I learned a lot from this web site www.worldofhummingbirds.com and also from speaking to a hummingbird rehabber. Thank you! Thank you I am going to learn about them. I am glade that the mom didn't leave the babies behind so you must have done something right. It was such a great video I shared it with a lot of my friends who are also big fans of the humming bird. I am lucky to have a couple of them in my yard and they come to my feeder all the time. When I first saw one I told my mom how I saw a great big bee and once I saw it again I said there the bee is there. MY was giggling at me and that's when she told me about humming birds and ever since I saw them for the first time I have been wanting to know everything about them. And thank you for the web sight I will be going there to learn more. I can not weight to see what ells you have gotten on camera.
