I have a baby snapping turtle. She has a habitat but doesn't like to get in the water much I have a 10 gallon tank I want to move her into, but I'm hesitant because she doesn't get in the water. Any recommendations? Thank you.
@spicywaterproductions3 жыл бұрын
Definitely get a bigger tank, water should be around 75-85 f and start it off on worms or pinkie mice and see if you can get her to swim up to you

does he hunt the guppies on his own..? mine is eating feeders but only from tweezers...
@spicywaterproductions4 жыл бұрын
Yeah he hunts down the guppies by himself sometimes but that was more or less when I forgot to feed him for a day or two or he just wanted a midnight snack or something but the guppies were kind of in there to keep ammonia levels and nitrides and nitrate levels in the pond consistent so I could have a nice little ecosystem going on but he did eat them on his own and we did end up feeding him a shiner fish with tweezers and he took him out of the tweezers as well he knew how to hunt and hand feed he was really good about that it's just on training like if you want him to hunt add fish in there that they might be there for a while but he'll find them and he'll get them and fish that are not faster than him so like little Molly's platters guppies anything like that will be perfect crawfish any type of crustacean and then mice fuzzies pinkies things like that very up the diet so that way he's not consistently eating the same thing over and over that way his shell forms correctly and gets all the vitamins he needs and make sure you have proper lighting too as well that really matters calcium levels really matter because their shell is made out of the same thing that your fingernails are made out of so just like the way you take care of your hands take care of the Shell the way you would your hands

@@spicywaterproductions yeah theres tiny crayfish in there and ive got some freeze dried shrimp also for an occasional treat. ive been getting feeder minnows (not goldies) but i believe they are too fast like you said... plus hes easily spooked for some reason, he was just hatched and almost dead when i found him but hes a lively little booger now.... Also ive got the double light setup for UVB and basking, which he doesnt bask...
@spicywaterproductions4 жыл бұрын
Your tank sounds good, and as far as your turtle being spooked they will be that way as hatchlings but as they get older and see you more they will recognize who you are that's what is cool about turtles in general and your doing good on not giving goldie's, the more you interact with it the more social it will be, and look into giving it (pinkies) baby mice that will have more protein in your turtle than just fish, I fed my snapping Pinkie's everyday, I would give him one pinkie in the morning and whatever her didn't finish take out and one at night and did the same process, but give him time and he will get more social and work with him a lot snapping turtles are smart
@spicywaterproductions4 жыл бұрын
And as far as basking it good to have the light but snapping turtles rarely come out of water but provide a basking spot as well as a heater for the water, keep the water between 87°-89°f that should make your turtle more active

@spicywaterproductions4 жыл бұрын
@@patrickk___ yes I did, I found some (turtle fix) from PetSmart it treats bacterial infections and repairs damaged tissue and wounds, basically I add 5ml of this into every 10 gal of your tank and do 75% water changes every two weeks and over time that should help

Do you know if they hibernate?
@spicywaterproductions4 жыл бұрын
Most turtles don't hibernate, often times if a pond is frozen over you will see the turtles moving slowly under the ice, their metabolism slowest down but they are still active
@poikungz66654 жыл бұрын
How do you deal with his feces
@spicywaterproductions4 жыл бұрын
I would do 75% water changes and also pick up a filter that is a little larger gallon wise than you tank so if you had a 20 gal you would need a 40 gal

What kind of mini filter are you using?
@spicywaterproductions4 жыл бұрын
It was a small turtle filter from petsmart go there or go to petsmart website and check out what filters they have or to see which filter is best for your tank with turtles go to the zoomed website and check out the filters and research which filter will work best for you

Where’d you get the turtle from?
@spicywaterproductions4 жыл бұрын
Some guy on the side of the road was selling turtles, so of course I had to stop and see what he had and he had a bunch of snapping turtle babies so I bought one and named him titan

Where do you get your duckweed? Offline or in the wild? Wanting some for my snapper’s tank

I bought it from my local pet shop it was in a tank and the shop was selling it for probably $10 for a 4"/4" piece of duckweed

Bro dyu need to filter the water with hot water or can it be any temperature for a little snapping turtle
@spicywaterproductions4 жыл бұрын
You wanna keep the water around 82° to 87° depending on what type of snapper you have and tank size
@thelyricalbarstard22214 жыл бұрын
spicy water productions what dyu I buy for it to be for a small turtle
@spicywaterproductions4 жыл бұрын
you have a couple options if the tank is small enough you can buy a heat light that's high enough and wattages and it'll keep the water warm enough for your turtle or you can buy one of the little sticky thermometer strips that are for fish tanks and it'll basically tell you where your tank is at and then if you want they do make specific gallon heaters as well
@thelyricalbarstard22214 жыл бұрын
spicy water productions do the snapping turtle need filter or can I just buy a small 2.5 gallon tank with a heat light and that’ll do the job right?

Will the turtle eventually become aggressive or will handling it daily domesticate it?
@rudyrodriguez92494 жыл бұрын
Handling it will definitely tame it
@jessiefranklin93183 жыл бұрын
Handling can help but don't get a snapping turtle expecting to be able to handle it. You may be able to but you have to go into knowing that there is a good possibility that it won't let you
@spicywaterproductions3 жыл бұрын
Handling daily will get your turtle used to who's is coming to his tank, snapping turtles are smart they're one of the only turtles that can actually remember their owners and you can actually teach them things but just expect to be careful around it because at the end of the day a snapping turtle is a dangerous animal / a snapping turtle you can lose a finger it is a possibility but with the right handling and the right care you and your turtle will be just fine if you only pick up your turtle from the back end by its shell you'll be fine but if you try to pick it up by the sides the snapping turtles can reach halfway across their side do some research watch some videos go ahead and watch mine on my channel and just watch how I handle him as a baby and even as a juvenile being that I trained him properly he got smart and learned that his back legs could hold on to you and he would try to reach all the way around and get me

I actually went out longboarding with a backpack with my girlfriend and picked up medium to large rocks and washed them off when we got home but honestly I would suggest going to a river or wash and try to find rocks you like cause you're gonna have to see them everyday
