That opening quote... Possibly the only quote more powerful from In The Beginning is when Emperor Londo Mollari was speaking of the war... "The humans, I think, knew they were doomed. But where another race would surrender to despair, the humans fought back with greater strength. They made the Minbari fight for every inch of space. In my life, I have never seen anything like it; they would weep, they would pray, they would say goodbye to their loved ones, and then throw themselves without fear or hesitation at the very face of death itself, never surrendering. No one who saw them fighting against the inevitable could help but be moved to tears by their courage, their stubborn nobility. When they ran out of ships, they used guns, when they ran out guns they used knives and sticks and bare hands. They were magnificent. I only hope that when it is my time, I may die with half as much dignity as I saw in their eyes in the end. They did this for two years. They never ran out of courage. @@spamviking I think the balance of blame lies on Earth for the instigating incident. The Earthforce commander had a history of shooting when in doubt. The minbari had no way of knowing their scanning equipment was so powerful they effectively overloaded the earth ships sensors making them think they were being jammed. The degree to which the Minbari conducted the war was of course extreme, though I think the lions share of the blame there lies with the warrior caste. Like Lenonn said in the film, the warrior caste loved to win and against the humans they could not lose. Being backed by intense anger from the populace at large who did not ever see the effects they had free reign show their dominance for the first time in long time.

The only problem I have with B5 ships is a big one - literally. I just think they are way too big. Especially with the level of technology depicted. Star Trek has structural integrity fields, but B5 has nothing like that. And there's no real point in making them that big. Nor are gun barrels of the size these amount to in the end necessary or practical. Inertia is a bitch and the shearing forces upon acceleration of the ship would be massive.

Oh, the old warrior. ;) The funny thing about Babylon 5 is that its tabletop wargame (B5Wars) is canon, giving us a rather lengthy history of numerous vessels. For example, the Hyperions had several distinct models: Prototype: multi-purpose ship of the line, the main weapons are five medium plasma cannons and two particle cannons. Alpha: effectively a slight refinement over the prototype. Beta: missile cruiser, without any other offensive weapon. Mostly phased out after the Sagittarius missile cruiser entered production. Everest likely wins thanks to the Guardian lasers shooting down the missiles and coming into range of the secondary railguns. Hecate Alpha: the Hecate designation is given to testbed Hyperion hulls, but in the lead-up to the Dilgar War EarthForce used the Hecate funds to commission more combat cruisers than authorized (the Senate was not amused), specifically Hyperions whose main weapons are four medium plasma cannons and three medium laser cannons. Gamma: planetary assault cruiser, equipped with three heavy plasma cannons and two mediums. Hecate Beta: testbed ship armed with captured Dilgar bolters (four heavy, three medium, and two light). One ship, later to evolve into the Hyperion Delta. Hecate wins. Delta: multi-purpose ship of the line, it's the first Hyperion variant equipped with Dilgar-derived technologies and refinements over old technologies, resulting in better armour, thrusters and reactors (all of which will appear on newer Hyperion variants). Armed with four heavy pulse cannons, three mediums, and two medium plasma cannons. This is the model that killed Dukhat. Epsilon: command cruiser with a superior communication suite. Armed with two heavy and four medium pulse cannons and two heavy laser cannons. Hyperion wins. Zeta: multi-purpose ship of the line. Actually predates the Earth-Minbari War, but was only put into production during it due EarthForce moving away from ordnance-based weapons. Is armed with two medium pulse cannons and five railguns. Theta: multi-purpose ship of the line, armed with two medium plasma cannons, four medium pulse cannons, and four heavy laser cannons (two fore, two aft). After the Earth-Minbari War becomes the main variant. Eta: patrol cruiser, armed with two heavy laser cannons and SEVEN medium pulse cannons. Lambda: AEGIS cruiser, first fielded in 2257 (during Santiago's first presidency). Has a helluva lot standard particle beams, sensor pods to help targeting fighters, and two missile racks optimized to take on fighters. No other weapons aside for the Interceptors. If you want to have the entirety, go ask the man that wrote the fanfic _The Dilgar War_ (The Lightning Count) over at Spacebattles (please note that he took a whole bunch of blurbs and made it into a gripping story about the Dilgar War) and he's one of the B5 gurus. It's pretty interesting when you actually get into the nitty-gritty of Babylon 5. By the time of the show, most Hyperions are Thetas, Etas, and Lambdas.

Fun fact: it was a tradition that warships that used muzzle-loaded cannons fire a full barrage prior to entering port. This was to show that they were not loaded as the ship sailed in with gun ports open & cannons protruding. Such a custom is pointless with breech-loading or energy weapons, but that's probably where the Minbari's stupid "peaceful" gesture came from. After all, the makers of "The Hunt for Red October" realized this when Marko Ramius ordered his torpedo tubes flooded but not to open the outer doors.

I like the look of the Hyperion. You can see it was clearly designed by different people than the Nova and the Omega. I’m not sure about the timing, though. I’ve read that the Nova preceded the Hyperion. KarmaTech introduced the Hyperion as a faster, more maneuverable and versatile craft than the heavy hitter like the Nova. She also featured Centauri weapons secretly provided by the Narns. After the war, Rocketdyne took a page of the competition’s book and used the new weapons on the Omega in lieu of the powerful but short-ranged plasma cannons of the Nova, losing only slightly in raw firepower

They felt like it was cheap. They probably had more sympathy for GROPOS who guilelessly slugged it out. Remember- the Minbari hold honor in the highest regard. @@matholomewbrooksopoulos7085 The attack that led to the Black Star being destroyed, started with the Lexington's battlegroup being lured into position by a Mimbari shuttle, that was faking being in distress. I'd call that sending a fake distress call. They only stopped at the Battle of the Line because they discovered that Mimbari souls were being reborn in human bodies, meaning they were potentially slaughtering their own kind as they saw it, which was the ONLY reason they stopped a war of genocide against a much weaker opponent, which hardly seems honourable. And then when the Shadows returned and there was a REAL fight, for the fate of all sapient life in the galaxy, the Warrior Caste sat on the sidelines and refused to fight, out of sheer Goddam *SPITE.* Now, tell me, where was their vaunted honour there?
@matholomewbrooksopoulos70853 жыл бұрын
@@weldonwin Some very good points here. I completely forgot how the battle where the Black Star was destroyed, and yes, it is absolutely hypocritical of the Minbari to act like Sheridan was a butcher when they used the same tactics. That being said, I think the matters of honor are a little tougher. I agree to the extent that they do quite a bit which I would not consider honorable, but I think they're at least mostly consistent when it comes to what they would consider honorable. Trying to genocide a much weaker foe? Doesn't seem honorable to me, but I can completely see how the Minbari would think it was. In Delenn's eyes at the time, the attack by the Prometheus was completely unprovoked and led to the death of Dukhat. I dont think it's outlandish to assume that a lot of Minbari felt the way she did. As for the warrior caste - It was spiteful, but there was a little more to it than that, wasn't there? If I recall correctly (hey, I've been mistake before), it wasn't spite alone, but also a reluctance to go on what they considered to be another holy war. I can see how they would consider that honorable. Also, it should be noted that even us humans sometimes don't consider being a bit (or very) dishonorable a problem when dealing with the dishonorable. Anyroad, great reply. 1:55 I was under the impression that the Thunderbolt couldn't operate from the older ship designs (which would make sense considering the way the bays are constructed and the manner in which the Aurora Starfuries were flipped 90 degrees to launch)... yes, I checked my B5 material and that is the case. The newer fighter was too large to fit into the older bays. 2:15 My sources say the Hyperion generally carried two shuttles. It would make far more sense to include one or more shuttles on a ship this size, since docking maneuvers are time consuming and even somewhat risky. Having some smaller transport craft, like a shuttle, would facilitate so many mundane functions that it would be laughable to leave them out. Now, a given Hyperion might have lost its shuttles or had them down for maintenance... 2:35 I always had problems with the "gun ports open, as a sign that our hands are empty" policy of the Minbari. What the heck are the gun ports even for? It just seems to go beyond reason and logic, which I account as poor writing on JMS's part. And there's even a continuity error there: if the Minbari have "jammers" that make it impossible for the EF to lock-on to them, how could they then detect that the gun ports were open? 3:24 I did like Hague. I was sorry to see him go. This video had some nice footage, and despite my criticisms, I liked it very much. Babylon 5 was a big part of my life and I'm glad that it is still alive and well (even if some of the cast are not).

The Hyperion! *Squee* That was my favourite ship back when I watched B5 the first time. Sure, she got pushed over in that role by the Sharlin and the Sunhawk, but she is so pretty.

I've always loved the Hyperion cruisers one of Earths oldest cruisers dating back since the Dilgar war of 2232 but many were destroyed during the Earth-Minbari war. I always think that the Hyperions will consign to the history books not only does the Hyperion look impressive but she also a workhorse of the Earth Alliance fleet all though its to bad that many were destroyed to turn back the Minbari advance.

I always wondered what happened to the two Hyperions that came through the gate in "Severed Dreams" but weren't seen during the battle at all.
@sparrowlt2 жыл бұрын
Acording to JMS they were destroyed by Starfury attacks during the battle.. but they didnt had time to render that (he said if they had done everything that was planned they would still be rendering today)

I wish the Hyperion had more of a role in the battle in Severed Dreams. By season 3 they leaned a bit too much on the Omega I think.

yes.. JMS admited the 2 Hyperions that were part of the fleet that tried to take B5 were taken out by Starfuries offscreen due to serious CGI time limits to render the ep.. even so its a Hyperion and not an Omega or a Warlock the ship that represents the EA in the final B5 decomision ceremony
@Darqshadow4 жыл бұрын
@@sparrowlt what better to use than the warship that has been a symbol of the fleet for decades. Funny part is that it was placed next to a Minabari war cruiser. Those two have a love/hate relationship.
@sparrowlt4 жыл бұрын
@@Darqshadow Also i allways considered the Hyperion a more maneovrable ship in space combat .. the Omegas with that big clunky centrifuge are still bound to aceleration inertias and we see crews standing up in the bridge during maneovers.. even a half G aceleration would throw everyone to the rear bulkheads (unless the Omegas have swiveling modules inside the big spinning section wich would solve that problem). The Hyperion doesnt have that problem since all crew is properly strapped to seats so it can acelerate within the crew endurance to G forces (like ships in the Expanse) also change direction rapidly without throwing off half crew.. its also have excelent weapons coverage all arround the ship and at least the Clarkstown variant (called the Midwinter subclass in fandom) has more than decent front firepower
@sparrowlt4 жыл бұрын
@@Darqshadow I absolutelly tought about that back in the day.. dont know if it was intended.. but the 2 ships that started the Minbari war one in front of the other.. Also we dont know what ship was actually in B5 decomision ceremony.. but the Hyperion herself was one of the ships in the Minbari first contact incident (yes that was confirmed as not to be a CGI bluff) and we know she survived at least until the final battle of the civil war (as she is seen in Sheridan's fleet right before the battle). BTW in one of the novels Mathew Gideon was asigned to the Hyperion after the loss of the Cerverus during the time arround the start of the civil war

Daniel, I challenge you to do one on the Earthship Ark from the Canadian TV show in the 1970s called ‘The Starlost’. This show starred Keir Dullea of ‘2001: A Space Odyssey’ fame. The ‘Ark’ (as it was commonly referred to) was tens of thousands of miles long. It housed dozens of massive bio-domes that were 50 miles in diameter, home to millions of people. Each dome was a different cultural society of people from agrarian to highly technological, who left Earth in a great multi-generational diaspora-due to an unknown cosmic disaster. About 100 years into the journey to a new world, some disaster befell the Ark and all the bio-domes were sealed off from each other to prevent further damage. The result of the damage was the destruction of a few of the domes and the loss of potentially millions of people, the fusion engines shut off, and the Ark going way off course headed for a collision with a star. The crew mysteriously perished, and 400 years later the residents of the bio-domes forgot they were even living on an ark. The reason for this disaster could have been due to an attempted A-I takeover of the Ark. Dullea plays a character named Devon who with his friends Rachel and Garth not only discover the truth about the Ark but also set out to save it and reunite all the bio-domes and preserve humanity, while getting the Ark back on course to humanity’s new home planet. Also, it should be noted that Walter Koenig (a.k.a. Pavel Chekhov from ‘Star Trek’) plays a nefarious alien named Oro who tries to steal the Ark for his own people’s selfish uses-putting all the humans on it in jeopardy. The Earthship Ark is a phenomenal creation that has levels of technological and construction wonders that are mind-blowing-even for a 1970s show. Harlan Ellison was also part of the development for the show. This is a great space ship to feature on SpaceDock-on par with the Stargate City-Ship Atlantis.

FYI, iTunes and Amazon recently added the original 4:3 version of Babylon 5. The space CGI scenes look a lot cleaner in that format since it isn't just zooming in and cropping, which is why those scenes look like goop in the widescreen one.

One of my favorite ships in SF because it looks realistic. Like, I could see this (or rather a ship like this) being built in real life one day. Not as a warship, obviously, unless we run into something out there, but as an interplanetary/interstellar starship.
