You guessed right, Su-metal was born in 1997 and this concert was to celebrate her 16th birthday. The story here goes roughly like this: In order to prevent Doomsday, the chosen of the fox god will sacrifice her mortal existence to become a goddess of metal. In not band lore terms, this concert closed out the year that Babymetal separated from the idol school Sakura Gakuin and became independent, so in a way the idol personas they had built up until then ceased to exist and only Su-metal, Moametal and Yuimetal remained. The "Doomsday" event that Su just ascended for is the Budokan concerts, I believe. You'd be surprised how many people don't actually pick up on them spelling out Babymetal. There's a big play on words at the heart of this song, which was their standard opening number for a long time. Native Japanese speakers can't pronounce "th", so they end up saying "death" as "dess", which makes it sound exactly like "desu", which turns "Su-metal death" into "Su-metal desu", which means "I am Su-metal" and "Babymetal Death" (the actual song title) becomes "We are Babymetal". So it's a song of introductions. In this case it ended the concert. They only crucify Su-metal on special occasions. Pause as much as you need to. Babymetal fans are used to it. You might get the occasional complaint, but the reality is that Amuse does not have a light touch on the copyright stuff, so this kind of thing is absolutely necessary outside of a few safe-ish videos. Channels that pause semi-frequently seem to have the highest success rate in my experience. Rewinding by a few seconds after each pause may also help? Unclear.

The "ghoul" that you refer to is Mikio Fujioka. He was a wonderful guitarist, a devotee of Alan Holdsworth and the "God of Smiles" (also known as the "Little God"). He tragically died of injuries suffered from a fall from an observation platform, where he was star gazing with his family... yes, his children saw this happen. Many believe that "Starlight" is a tribute to him, and maybe the entire "Trilogy of Lights" is inspired by his passing. He will forever be missed.

Good reaction - bummer about 'Road of Resistance', but that one in particular seems to have been targeted a lot for blocking in recent months for some reason (or for no good reason). Some people have got it unblocked or avoided the block by putting a watermark over the video or obscuring it in some way. So 'BABYMETAL Death' (and nearly all this has already been said in the comments, so don't bother reading any further if you don't want to, but I have it all ready copied and ready to be pasted, so I may as well add it): #notacult So how did you celebrate your 16th birthday? This is where we all realised 3 Japanese teenage girls were more 'metal' than any of us ever were or will be. There is a translation of the intro video in the description which would have helped a bit with understanding what was happening. "Legend 1997. (referring to the year of Su's birth - good spot, nobody picks up on that as a rule) It is told that receiving the legendary neck brace from the god of Metal, she shall abandon her human life and be reborn as a goddess. Basically this show was the final step in BABYMETAL transitioning from Idol group sub-unit to independent metal band - it was also Su-metal's final step in her transition from J-Pop Idol - she was sacrificing her human existence and life as a J-Pop Idol to be reborn as a Metal Goddess chosen to lead the Metal Resistance. 'BABYMETAL Death' was the first track on the first album and was most often used as the show opener (without the crucifixion) - it is the perfect introduction - that is what the lyrics are:- "B - A - B - Y - M - E - T - A - L Death Death Death Death Death Death. Su-metal death. Yuimetal death. Moametal death. BABYMETAL death. Death Death Death Death Death Death." It is a play on words. There is no 'TH' sound in Japanese, so to a Japanese speaker death sounds like desu (the U is silent) spoken with a slight lisp. Desu means "To be - I am - you are - we are - it is" etc ... so in Japan you might introduce yourselves as "Mat and Chels React desu" (we are Mat and Chels React). All they were doing throughout the song was introducing themselves by name and introducing BABYMETAL by name - and 'death' is just the sort of thing you'd expect to be chanted by a self respecting metal band and their audience while the lead singer is crucified. There were a couple of homages in this performance too. The opening drum beat is an homage to Metallica's 'One' (once again you were absolutely correct) and the statue crumbling at the end pays homage to Metallica's Justice For All tour of 1989 where they also had a statue (Justice) crumble at the end of their shows. The neck brace is a tribute to X Japan drummer/pianist/songwriter/composer Yoshiki who damaged his neck so badly headbanging that he has to wear a neck brace most of the time, especially when performing. On special occasions 'BABYMETAL Death' was used later in the show - Legend 1997 was the title of the show celebrating Su-metal's 16th birthday ... and they only crucify Su on special occasions. So far that has happened 5 times, the last was at Legend S in December 2017 to help her celebrate her 20th birthday - and that one had extra flames. Did I mention? #notacult

The BABYMETAL lore/storyline is that the "Fox God" chose these 3 girls to unite the world through metal. This concert is the day after Su's 16th birthday...so it is her sweet 16 celebration in the real world, but in the BABYMETAL "storyline" it is time for her to abandon her human life and be reborn as a metal goddess (as stated in the animated intro). In the real world she is also leaving the pop idol life (leaving the pop idol group, Sakura Gakuin, that she just graduated from) and live the metal life by being only in BABYMETAL. As for the religious symbols used, such as the crosses and the statue that almost looks like the Virgin Mary statue but actually has an Asian face (some say it's Su, the lead singer's, face), they are not meant to have any religious or Christian meaning in this performance and are just used as an homage to old classic heavy metal theatrics. That statue which crumbles at the end is an homage to Metallica, and the neck brace is an homage to a Japanese metal band, X Japan, who's drummer broke or injured his neck from headbanging too much. #notacult 🦊🤘

Babymetal are big Metallica fans, and this performance has several nods to Metallica. The initial riff is from One, and the Statue behind them is a nod to "And Justice for All". Metallica are famous for doing instrumental songs (Orion, The Call of Ktalu, Suicide and Redemption), so this is more or less the same, but with a theatrical performance on top of it in special occasions. Regularly, they opened with this song, since the few lyrics basically mean "We are Babymetal".

It's word play. In Japanese, to say "I am *NAME*", you say "*NAME* + Desu, however in Desu the 'U' is silent. This sounds like "Death" and this song is a Deathmetal track. This is also one reason for the crucifixion theme.

Don't worry about pausing and rewinding! BABYMETAL fans understand and are use to it. "Road of Resistance" is one of the songs that gets blocked instantly or taken down eventually....but what most reactors have to do is either blur the performance video, cover it up with a logo/picture, or cut out/chop up the parts that Amuse wants blocked. Some reactors will put up 2 versions of the reaction video....one that is normal but gets blocked in Japan and other countries, and another one that is blurred or chopped up so Japan, etc can see it. Also I have noticed that some BABYMETAL videos that don't get blocked or taken down have part of the performance video cut off like it went too far out of the reaction video frame (usually the bottom) and I think having the performance video even smaller in the reaction video helps too. But no matter what, I am sorry you have to deal with the issues caused by the company. I hope you guys enjoyed the video though!

The full concert name is Legend "1997" Su-metal Seitansai (Holy Birthday). 'Legend 1997' is fine for short. : ) Kami Band members for this song were guitarists Mikio Fujioka (RIP) and Leda Cygnus. BOH was on bass and Hideki Aoyama on drums. This song was usually used as an opener, not the closing number like this time. It's also usually much shorter, and doesn't include a crucifixion. : )

If you are referring to that early version of "Headbanger", that is the premeir of the Kami Band, although none of the same musicians have played with BM since that Episode. That is one of the best performances of "Headbanger", IMHO. That drummer kicks ass!

The neck collar that Moa put on Su is in homage to Yoshiki, drummer & main song writer for XJapan. XJapan is the greatest metal band you likely have never heard of. Yoshiki damaged his neck from his violent headbanging while drumming. His doctors required him to wear a neck collar while performing. Making the neck collar a metal symbol in Japan. Yoshiki met with the girls prior to their concert at Wembley Arena, the first Japanese band to perform at Wembley. XJapan was scheduled to be the first o perform at Wembley, but they fell apart and never made it.. Oh, Babymetal broke the records for band merchandise sold at Wembley!!

Whoever posted these Legend 1997 videos should consider changing the titles 😅. The titles of this and the 'Headbanger' performances give the impression that Legend 1997 is part of the song title. Song name is 'Babymetal Death' (not just Death) and the concert is Legend 1997. There's barely any vocals cause it's an intro to Babymetal. It was the last song in this show for the theatrics and whatnot, but it's usually the opener and it's also the opener of their first album. The meaning has been covered already, so...nice reaction. You should check out 'Headbanger' from the same show - Legend 1997. It's also quite heavy and there's a good amount of vocals this time.

Desu means to be in japanese. so at the begining first spoken words i think they were presenting themselves (at least if they were they would say like Su-metal desu) as in 'i'm su metal' as a direct translation, but also used in the sence of Su-metal present or su metal is here. The official lyric really consists of only the above one line. Maybe the staff thought too many "DEATH"s are inappropriate. The Japanese word "desu" (です) is a copula (= to be). The Eastern Japanese almost drop "u" of this word, so the word "desu/des" sounds like "death". And someone started writing "DEATH" instead of "です" (desu). It makes sense only where the Japanese word "desu" is expected to come. The title "BABYMETAL DEATH" means only "We are BABYMETAL." You ALMOST got it right. The actual name of the song is "BABYMETAL DEATH". It's a pun with English because "Death" sounds like "Desu" in Japanese which is a form of describing someone or something. For example if your name is John. You would say John desu. It sounds a bit like "death". It means "I am John" or "This is John". Basically the song's meaning is "This is BABYMETAL" or "We are BABYMETAL". They do chant "DEATH" or "DESU" at the end. This song was used for several years as an intro to their concerts and would get the fans riled up and full of energy for the remainder of the shows. It would also prove to the newcomers (for example when they opened for Korn during their 2017 tour, some people only came in for Korn and thought BABYMETAL was going to be a bit too poppy and bubblegum for their ears, but they would all be struck in awe at the heaviness of BABYMETAL right as they started their show :D). The lyrics are pretty much it. The girls take turns saying "SU-METAL Death" - "YUIMETAL Death" - "MOAMETAL Death" - "BABYMETAL Death". And if you remember during the song, the girls also pointed at the crowd and toward eachother, to make sure the fans knew that they themselves were part of BABYMETAL and what it represents. BABYMETAL always acknowledges that without its fans, it wouldn't be BABYMETAL. During interviews, the girls would also always say these words to introduce themselves in a cutesy way. The word DEATH is like a fun counter-part of their cuteness and underlines that they're also very much Metal. They love a pun ;). Also, good catch on the "One" reference at the beginning. It is definetly a nod to Metallica. Another nod is when the statue breaks down just like it did during the "And Justice for All" tour. ;) I think that's what this song is about though. It's to make those people who say that they aren't heavy eat their words. It's telling the naysayers "so you're saying we're too poppy ? Too cutesy ? Right we CAN do Metal. Watch this." I'm actually glad you were a bit disappointed it didn't have much of the girls in it. Shows it's starting to grow on you :)

So this is kind of a joke song. Its super dark because it makes the punch line more funny. So this is the intro song for the band (early on in there carear) The lyrics are B-A-B-Y M-E-T-A-L death (desu) Su-Metal Desu (death) Yui-Metal Desu (death) Moa-Metal Desu (death) Babymetal Desu (death) Desu is used in japanese when introducing yourself and roughly translates to "I am" So they are basically saying I am Su Metal I am Yui Metal I am Moa Metal We are Babymetal Its just them introducing the band. However Desu sounds roughly similar to Death in english. So the joke is they are introducing there Heavy Metal band while also screaming Death the entire time. Its just an example of Gap Moe. Finding the cute between whats expected and what you end up with. So the darker it is, the funnier the joke is. Because they are actually just being polite and telling you the band name for 5 minutes.

The translation of the intro is in the description of the video, I don't know why people who recommend the song don't mention this. It explains a lot of what's going on, lore wise. I actually think BABYMETAL Death is only suggested these days for the shock effect, even though it tells a good and important story. It would also clarify that it has nothing to do with religion itself. The vast majority of Japanese people aren't religious, so as long as it makes for a good show they don't really give a damn if some other part of the world could be offended because they misunderstand the intention behind the performance. References in the performance: Intro, Metallica - One. Statue in the background, Metallica - ...and Justice for All tour and album cover. Neckbrace, Yoshiki, drummer and songwriter of X Japan, needed to wear a neckbrace on stage because of permanent neck damage sustained from too much headbanging. Crucifixion, Idol Suzuka Nakamoto as an on stage performer gets sacrificed and resurrected as Su-metal, the Metal goddess. It basically means: Su had to graduate the school-themed J-Pop Idol group Sakura Gakuin, which BABYMETAL was a sub-group of since it's foundation in 2010, so BABYMETAL became an independent group. Moa & Yui remained part of Sakura Gakuin until their graduation in March 2015 (you need to leave, or graduate, when you graduate from real life middle school (age 15, 9th grade)). Even though many people dispute it, they're essentially still Idols, at least in front of cameras. So it was actually more like Suzuka Nakamoto the performer ceased to exist and only the character of Su-metal remains when it comes to public life and appearances. To the solo, Kami Band guitarist Takayoshi Ohmura (who didn't play it in this performance, that was Mikio Fujioka) said a few years back in an interview that this solo is the most difficult guitar part to play in any BABYMETAL song.
