Hahaha Great reaction. There can't be many bands who would crucify their lead singer on stage to celebrate her 16th birthday (Legend 1997 was the title of the show celebrating her 16th birthday in December 2013). This was 3 months before they released their first album .... and from just 18 months or so before where they played their first solo headline show in a venue with a capacity of 150 they were able to sell out this venue (Makuhari Messe) with about 9,000 fans. I will try to explain what was actually happening. There is an English translation of the intro video in the description which would have helped a bit (perhaps) with understanding what was happening: "Legend 1997. It is told that receiving the legendary neck brace from the god of Metal, she shall abandon her human life and be reborn as a goddess. The bloodline which has been passed down from ancient times is destined to be the guide, boarding the ark of time. The apocalypse is prophesied DOOMSDAY comes There remains ... little time ..." Basically this show was the final step in BABYMETAL transitioning from Idol group sub-unit (it had this narrative running all the way through and even started with a lip-synced dance remix of their song 'Headbanger') to independent metal band - it was also Su-metal's final step in her transition from J-Pop Idol - she was sacrificing her human existence and life as Suzuka Nakamoto, a J-Pop Idol, to be reborn as Su-metal, a Metal Goddess chosen to lead the Metal Resistance. 'BABYMETAL Death' was the first track on the first album and was most often used as the show opener (without the crucifixion) - it is the perfect introduction - that is what the lyrics are:- "B-A-B-Y-M-E-T-A-L Death Death Death Death Death Death. Su-metal death. Yuimetal death. Moametal death. BABYMETAL death. Death Death Death Death Death Death." It is a play on words. There is no 'TH' sound in Japanese, so to a Japanese speaker the English word death sounds like desu (the U is silent) spoken with a slight lisp. Desu means "To be - I am - you are - we are - it is" etc ... so in Japan you might introduce yourself as "Metalheads' Journey desu" (We are Metalheads' Journey). All they were doing throughout the song was introducing themselves by name and introducing BABYMETAL by name - and 'death' is just the sort of thing you'd expect to be chanted by any self respecting metal band and their audience while the lead singer is crucified. There were a couple of homages in this performance too. The opening drum riff is an homage to Metallica's 'One' and the statue crumbling at the end (and large part of the reason we recommended this after your first reaction) pays homage to Metallica's Justice For All tour of 1989 where they also had a statue (Lady Justice) crumble at the end of their shows. The neck brace is a tribute to X Japan drummer/pianist/songwriter/composer Yoshiki who damaged his neck so badly headbanging that he had to wear a neck brace a lot of the time, especially when performing. On special occasions 'BABYMETAL Death' was used later in the show - it was the finale here at Legend 1997, the show celebrating Su-metal's 16th birthday ... and they only crucify Su on special occasions. So far that has happened 5 times (plus a couple more in the shows at the Budokan they played early in 2021), the last before those was at Legend S, Baptism XX in December 2017 to help her celebrate her 20th birthday - and that one had extra flames.

⚡ 💀 💕 / 💀 💀 💀 Fans from Japan often travel to the US to see BABYMETAL up close at smaller venues. I'm in the USA, and while I've seen them live a few times, seeing a big BABYMETAL show in Japan is definitely a bucket list item for me. Even so, their October 2019 L.A. Forum concert was pretty epic, and was captured on blu-ray. That was the album release concert for 'Metal Galaxy', the third studio album.

So, you're aware that this is basically a dad joke gone way to far, right? So far that it went all the way around and got really awesome. If you don't know, the joke is that the Japanese way of saying your name is by saying your name and then "desu," basically "I am [name]". However, the u is desu is usually silent, so it sort of sounds like they're saying death (since there is no "th-" sound in Japanese, "des" is the way they'd say it). So early on they always exaggerated the "desssss" when introducing themselves, making it both cute and (nominally) metal. So "Babymetal Death" is just "We Are Babymetal," but with a bit of a dad joke. So is the name "Babymetal," btw. They way Japanese say "Heavy Metal" would be transliterated as "hebi metaru," and Babymetal is "bebi metaru." It's a play on words.

@@metalheadsjourney Babymetal met Metallica at Summer Sonic 2013 (about 6 months before this show) because they had t-shirts that said 'And Justice for Babymetal'. Lars Ulrich went to watch them. It was probably their worst live performance ever. Even the Kami Band was subpar. Which is to say it was still really good. Lars invited them to come watch Metallica and the girls said it was the first time they enjoyed Metal. They stopped being afraid of Metal and realized it was show business the same as Jpop. All their concerts after that just got better and better. Maybe that would have happened anyways? Who knows? But the girls credited Metallica for being helpful. They opened for Metallica in Korea later on. So for all the people who say Babymetal isn't metal. Was your first metal concert at 15 years old as personal guests of Metallica? I don't think so. That was their first metal concert other than their own. :)

This was indeed the last song of the show. To understand the neck brace, you have to watch the MV of headbanger. I suggest to watch the live version of headbanger from the legend 1997 concert first. The crowd knows its choreography. Not just in Japan but in Europe and North America, too. BABYMETAL tours through Europe in April and May this year. That's the next chance to see them live.

Babymetal is heavy metal theater. When haters point out how they are a manufactured group, they miss the whole point - it is a heavy metal production outfit fronted by a little kickass Japanese lady and two even littler Japanese dolls. It is just a mindblowing project in every respect. btw, most of The One loves this silly cult shit LOL

So early on, Babymetal was catching a LOT of flack from the Metal Elitist crowd, and granted, some of their earlier Kawaii(cute) Metal songs were a little heavy on the 'cute' side (see Gimme Chocolate)..but all of their songs, including Gimme Chocolate, had a solid Metal base from which it is built. So when some id10t would stick his nose up in the air and say Babymetal was not Metal, I just asked what they did for their 16th Birthday and then would show them this performance and walk away!! Yep! This was Su-metal's 16th Birtday show!! (well, actually her birthday was the day before but close enough) LoL!! The opening Riff was straight out of Metallica's "One" and the crumbleing statue at the end did pay homage to the Lady Liberty Statue from the 1988-1989 Metallica support tour for their album "And Justice For All". The neckbrace first surface in the Babymetal Lore in the Music Video for their song "Headbangeeeeerrrr!!!!!!" It also pays homage to another band, X-Japan and their Drummer, Yoshiki, who would Headbang so hard while playing that he severely injured his neck and doctors advised him to stop playing permanently...but he insisted on continuing to play so they asked that he at least wear a neck corset to minimize the damage...many surgeries later he is consided by many as one of Japans greatest Composer and Multi-instrumentalist!! Others have talked about the word play involved with the song name and the Babymetal/Heavy Metal connection, but understand that Japan LOVES a good Pun!! They also love the "Gap"...that space between two things that should not go together but if they do, and it works, there is nothing better in the World!! The Fox Hole is Deep guys...you have a lot more exceptional experiences ahead of you if you stick with Babymetal!! And I hope you continue to check out more Rock and Metal Groups from Japan as that scene has really exploded over the last decade! So thanks again for another great Babymetal reaction and as always.... Put your Kitsune UP!! Po!

Good reaction, thanks! Nothing to see here, just Su-metal celebrating her 16th birthday with her friends and some of their fans (like 9.000 of them) all chanting DEATH! DEATH! DEATH! DEATH! All pretty normal I guess. 🤣 Jokes aside, the whole concert is an allegory about their transformation from a j-pop idol group sub-unit to a legit metal band and this was the final number with Su-metal's sacrifice as an idol and human to reborn as a metal goddess. Here is something with more vocals and a very important moment on their history: "Ijime, Dame, Zettai" (Live at Sonisphere 2014): kzbin.info/www/bejne/iKCQkJaYm8mlj6c Until next time!

I was at the Houston show at Revention. Worth every dollar and every second spent! They were in transition and hadn't said a word, Yui was missing, they'd dumped the tutus, and had the Muscle Metal backup dancers and unless you caught the Kansas show upload, you didn't see it coming. Even so, I was right of the stage center on the rail in front of Isao (guitar) and it was the best show ever short of Rush.

The song title is a pun: ベニメタルデス(“BABYMETAL Death”, when pronounced using the sounds of the Japanese language), sounds exactly like ベビメタルです (“we are BABYMETAL”). The narrator in the beginning tells the story of the Fox God bringing the band to the world. Then the girls say, in Japanese, “I am SU-METAL,” “I am YUI-METAL,” “I am MOA-METAL,” and then, “We are BABYMETAL.” At the end of ROAD OF RESISTANCE, they close the show by saying “We are BABYMETAL,” in English, three times.

Concert was in 2013, Su just turned 16 the day before and Yui and Moa are 14. What were you doing at 14yo!???!. And So Suzuka Nakamoto, Jpop idol is reborn as Su-Metal the Metal Queen. The neck brace is a symbol of Metal Music in Japan. Yoshiki, of X Japan (the greatest rock/metal band you never heard of) damaged his neck by headbanging too hard requiring him to wear a brace. They have only performed 2 arena shows outside of Japan, Wembley Arena and the LA Forum.

Often used for opening up every BABYMETAL Concert, now they switch to Metal Galaxy "In The Name Of". Death Legend 1997 Apocalypse:- Legend 1997 Apocalypse is a concert celebrating Su-Metal aka Suzuka Nakamoto 16th Birthday 🎉(Seitansai) which took place in Makuhari Messe in Chiba prefecture. Metallic Fans will notice the opening riffs which derived from Metallica song "ONE" which pays homage to Metallica. Live:- Death Legend 1999 & 1997 Apocalypse (stylized as LIVE~LEGEND 1999&1997 APOCALYPSE) is the second live video release by the Japanese heavy metal band Babymetal. The album contains live footage of two shows, entitled Legend "1999" and Legend "1997" (named after birth years of the members of Babymetal), performed in Japan in 2013. It was released in 2-disc DVD and Blu-ray formats on October 29, 2014. Live: Legend 1999 & 1997 Apocalypse:, Released: October 29, 2014. Recorded: June 30, 2013 (Legend "1999"). December 21, 2013 (Legend"1997"). Venue: NHK Hall (Legend "1999"). Makuhari Messe (Legend "1997"). Genre: Kawaii metal, J-pop, heavy metal. Length: 75:28 (Legend "1999") 82:24 (Legend "1997") Label: BMD Fox Toy's Factory Amuse Director: InniVision Producer: Kobametal Babymetal video chronology Live:, Legend I, D, Z Apocalypse (2013). Live: Legend 1999 & 1997 Apocalypse (2014). Live at Budokan: Red Night & Black Night Apocalypse (2015). The Destruction Of The Statue is similar to Metallica Justice for All live concert in Mexico City, Mexico 🇲🇽. The Japanese word "desu" (です) is a copula (= to be). The Eastern Japanese almost drop "u" of this word, so the word "desu/des" sounds like "death". And someone started writing "DEATH" instead of "です" (desu). It makes sense only where the Japanese word "desu" is expected to come. The title "BABYMETAL DEATH" means only "We are BABYMETAL." No relation to the death itself. I'm not sure of its origin, but I saw long before such a character as a vampire or a death metal singer in a comic and all his "です" (desu) were replaced with "DEATH" to emphasize his character. With such an air, it works well. Without such an air, it probably doesn't work. There is a genre named "Death Metal". The sound of this tune seems to fall within that genre, and the lyric writer may have put many "DEATH"s to emphasize the Death-Metal-ness. It might be alright to use many "DEATH"s without thinking of death if some of Death Metal bands also chose their style just to differentiate themselves rather than driven by the feeling about death. But I don't know the Death Metal well. MAKUHARI MESSE:- Makuhari Messe (幕張メッセ) is a Japanese convention center outside Tokyo, located in the Mihama-ku ward of Chiba city, in the northwest corner of Chiba prefecture. Designed by Fumihiko Maki, it is accessible by Tokyo's commuter rail system. Makuhari is the name of the area, and Messe is a German language word meaning "trade fair". •Owner: Makuhari Messe, Inc. •Opened: 9 October 1989. •Expanded: October 1997. •Classroom-style seating: 304 (International Conference Room). •Banquet/ballroom: 1,600 (Convention Hall). •Theatre seating: 7,860 (Makuhari Event Hall). Makuhari Messe is close to Tokyo Disney Resort in Urayasu, and to Chiba prefecture's black sand beaches. It is accessible from Kaihimmakuhari station on the Keiyō Line of East Japan Railway Company (JR East). The center is the host of the annual Tokyo Auto Salon (modified car show, in January), the biennial Tokyo Motor Show (in October), the annual Tokyo Game Show (video game hardware and software exhibition, in September), the annual Jump Festa (manga, anime, and video game exposition, in December), and the biannual Wonder Festival (toys, scale figures, and garage kits exposition, in February and July). The venue was host to several Nintendo Space World events. It will be the venue for certain sports during the Tokyo 2020 Olympic and Paralympic Games. Kitsune Up 🦊🦊🦊🤘🤘🤘🇯🇵🇸🇬#notacult.

Thanks for this reaction. Kind of surprised you didn't pick up on the Metallica One-like riff at the start of the song. It's part of the 2 homages/nods to Metallica in this performance. When Babymetal was pretty new and they would perform they would always open with this song, including at rock/metal festivals abroad. Some people would think, it's just some girls, can't be that heavy. It's pretty heavy alright You'd see the guys, some of them, just came to see what the fuss was about really take notice during this song. Also, it's not a cult. A Metal magazine did say: cult-like following, that's about how far we go. 🙂

hello fellow Texans (and maybe at least one fellow Houstonian?), I'm just catching up on your BM reactions! really enjoying it so far, but you've only just scratched the surface. speaking of seeing them live in Japan, you just missed their return in January (it was awesome!) but they announced another set of shows April 1 and 2, and the general lottery for foreigners opens in just a few days I think. If you are able you should definitely try to go! As for next reactions, I can tell as a mostly prog-metal fan prior to getting into BM, my favorite songs are Tales of the Destinies, Syncopation, and Akatsuki, and as you have done so far I recommend trying to react to live performances when you can. sadly a lot of their live stuff gets blocked by Amuse, but there are workarounds. The words are an introduction. They are just saying "Su-metal desu," "Yui-metal desu," "Moametal desu," "Babymetal desu" - "I am Su-metal, I am Yui-metal, I am Moametal, we are Babymetal!" The word "desu" is pronounced very similar to "death," (the "u" is silent) but just means "I am" or "we are." When they would perform it live as an opener, Western ears often thought they were hearing "death," so Koba decided to run with it and created a whole lore about it - Su is sacrificed as a human and returns as a goddess. A lot of the lore of Babymetal began similarly tongue-in-cheek because of various misunderstandings of terms, gestures, etc. The whole kitsune/Fox God lore began because the girls when they were young misunderstood how to make the "devil horns" they saw at metal concerts, so their version looked more like a shadow-puppet fox head - and the Fox God lore was born!

What a way to celebrate your 17 th birthday... Suzuka made 17 years old the day before the concert. In this, she's been crucified as in she died as the Suzuka from the 'Sakura Gakuin', to be reborn as Su-Metal (the Metal goddess)

This song is cool and all, but if you want a more serious type of song listen to "Rondo of nightmare with Mischiefs of God intro Budokan live" it's invite only arena, Ozzy played here back in the day, and it's just overall better imo. But Megitsune still #1

Great reaction and yes, this was the last song. Japanese audiences are known for being part of the show, they know when to jump, when to shout, when to bow, etc. Their shows in Japan are on another level, just wait till you get to their videos from the Tokyo Dome shows (two shows, both sold out, 55K each night).

@@joshbrewer4309 Its just a joke among Babymetal fans - some performances, the Fox God lore, the passionate fan base etc can appear a bit 'cult-ish' so we sort of encourage the rumours with the hashtag denying it all. Not touchy at all, we're just having fun.

Who doesn't enjoy a bit of theatrical autodafe? Here BM appropriate the symbolism of Easter to use as part of their own lore and apply it to Su's transformation from a schoolgirl into a metal goddess to save "metal". They have also taken Shinto images of the fox that is associated with Inari so they are borrowing from many traditions. "Babymetal DEATH" is how BM usually says "hello" and introduces themselves. It's the first song on their first album and has often been used to start a concert. But here it is used as a big messianic, pun of a finale. To English speakers the song seems to be all about death, when in fact it is BM saying who they are and affirming their presence. The lyrics go "Death, Death, Death.. , Su-Metal desu"...etc. The "desu" sounds like "death" to Western ears, but in Japanese it means "to be" - so the words are " Death, Death, Death... I am Su-metal, I am Yuimetal, I am Moametal, We are Babymetal". This concert, Legend 1997, celebrated Su's 16 birthday and her transition in BM lore from a school girl into a metal goddess. It also traced the transformation of BM from an idol group to a metal band as they start with a lip synced, dubstep version of "Headbanger" and end with this live version of Babymetal DEATH backed by the Kami band. The DNA helix in the intro visuals to this song also appears on Su's stick mic in Headbanger and is an icon of life and transformation. This is reiterated in the use of the Christian iconography of the crucifixion. Death and life exist together... #notacult. From this concert they would start their first European tour and have a break out performance at Sonisphere 2014.

I think the Budokan Black Night performance from 2014 would be a better choice. Or Budokan 2021. 'Megitsune' at LEGEND 1997 wasn't one of the songs at that show with the live Kami Band. They were only on stage for the final five songs for that concert.
