It's really cool that you say that Babymetal impressed you at the APMAs. It was weird seeing a dead crowd for Babymetal. My reaction was 'these people don't deserve this' but i guess i should be more aware that it is a very different thing than a Babymetal concert or even a festival.

@Piotr Tobarek I knew that the complexities of his speech would throw you off. If you are serious about researching this then maybe you can find a professor of English and psychology to examine and explain his comments to you. He is a master of rhetoric. He is a master of gaslighting. It is VERY OBVIOUSE that he is being rude and dismissive. It is very obvious that he CREATES HIS OWN FACTS. Please look up the word rhetoric; it is sometimes called conversational terrorism. Mansplaining his world view. I didn't want to push it but I have seen his comments elsewhere and they are more openly sadistic and twisted. On music sites he disguises his tone a bit. God bless you for your very kind and noble. I need to work on my kindness that I know. I know that I am not noble but know that I am a no bull kind of guy. BTW I would never try to mansplaine to you anything about your primary language. I would say more like co-workers than friends. I think they get along pretty well, especially now that the age gap isn't so huge. A year and a half is a lot when you're 14. But i don't see them socializing outside of work. Maybe Yui and Moa in the early years. But i seriously doubt that Su wanted to hang out with two 12 year olds when she was 14 or two 14 year olds when she was 16.

@@piotrtoborek2442 'Graduation speeches from SG show clearly that there are strong emotions involved' I'm not so sure about that. It was show business. Also it's not like girls that age haven't been known to be emotional. Simply saying sad words can make someone cry. I cried simply reading the lyrics for 'No Rain No Rainbow'. Why wouldn't they cry saying sad words whether or not they meant them? And hearing them. Well, as far as them being friends, i would consider a co-worker that you really get along with well to be a co-worker not a friend. I would say they're a friend if you're still close after you no longer work together. I have had a lot of people i liked at work but i never saw them once i stopped working there.

Koba Metal, creator of BabyMetal is a huge X-Japan and Metallica fan. This concert Legend 1997 (Dec 21, 2013) coincide with Su Metal's birthday on Dec 20. The same year both BabyMetal became independent from idol group Sakura Gakuin and Su Metal graduated in March. So this crucifixion is symbolizing the end of Su Metal's life as an idol to become a full time Metal Queen. The breaking and collapse statue is an homage to Metallica "And Justice For All" live concert, where the Lady of Justice statue breaks, just like the Goddess statue breaks at the end of this performance., also shows the end of her idol life/persona. #notacult
@Grington300
@Grington300 3 жыл бұрын
#notacult There is a translation of the intro video in the description which would have helped a bit with understanding what was happening. "Legend 1997. (referring to the year of Su's birth) It is told that receiving the legendary neck brace from the god of Metal, she shall abandon her human life and be reborn as a goddess. The bloodline which has been passed down from ancient times is destined to be the guide, boarding the ark of time. The apocalypse is prophesied DOOMSDAY comes There remains... little time.." Basically this show was the final step in BABYMETAL transitioning from Idol group sub-unit to independent metal band - it was also Su-metal's final step in her transition from J-Pop Idol - she was sacrificing her human existence and life as a J-Pop Idol to be reborn as a Metal Goddess chosen to lead the metal Resistance. Did I mention #notacult yet? 'BABYMETAL Death' was the first track on the first album and was most often used as the show opener (without the crucifixion) - it is the perfect introduction - that is what the lyrics are:- "B - A - B - Y - M - E - T - A - L Death Death Death Death Death Death. Su-metal death. Yuimetal death. Moametal death. BABYMETAL death. Death Death Death Death Death Death." It is a play on words. There is no 'TH' sound in Japanese, so to them death sounds like desu (the U is silent) spoken with a slight lisp. Desu means "To be - I am - you are - we are - it is" etc ... so in Japan you might introduce yourselves as "Mettal Maffia desu" (we are Mettal Maffia). All they were doing throughout the song was introducing themselves by name and introducing BABYMETAL by name. On special occasions it was used later in the show - Legend 1997 was the title of the show celebrating Su-metal's 16th birthday ... and they only crucify Su on special occasions. So far that has happened 5 times, the last was at Legend S in December 2017 to help her celebrate her 20th birthday - and that one had extra flames.

So the deal with this epic performance is the celebration of Su-metal's 16th birthday, and transformation into our Metal Goddess. The crucifixion symbolizes the end of her old self, and the beginning of a new journey for her. This was the final act of the show, so they had already been kicking the crowds ass for more than an hour before this. Su has been crucified 4-5 times in Babymetal's history, and the last time was in 2017 at he 20th birthday concert, Legend S: Baptism XX, in her hometown of Hiroshima. The song is Babymetal Death, the Legend 1997 is the name of the concert, as Su was born in 1997. Usually this song was used to open concerts, without the crucifixions of course, but for one of the Tokyo Dome concerts all three were on crosses and lifted from below the floor at the start of the show while this was being played. Epic!

Ok, so first, #notacult Second, this performance is packed with hidden meanings, homage to other musicians and bands and strong Lore surrounding the group. The song is "Babymetal Death" not "Death Legend 1997". The concert was "Legend 1997". Easy to get it mixed up...a lot of people do. So much to explain here. At this time in Babymetal's history, they were opening their performances with "Babymetal Death" as it was just a song to get the audience hyped up. They would call "Su-metal Desu"....which translates to "I am Su-metal"..then Yui and then Moa and then "Babymetal Desu" which was "We are Babymetal". 'Desu' is said like 'Dess' with the 'U' being silent, but as a play on words, the girls would say it and stick out their tongue right at the end so it sounds like "Babymetal Death". Fun huh!?! For this concert, they opened with "Ave Maria", the classic Christian song under the statue of the Mother Mary. They closed the show with their old 'opener' and the statue crumbles. This is in homage to the "Lady Liberty" statue that fell apart during the Metallica tour "And Justice For All". Also, the opening riff is a straight pull from the Metallica song "One" (Babymetal call their fan base "The One"). The Neckbrace is from their video "Headbanger" and it is a tribute to the drummer for X-Japan, Yoshiki, who use to headband so hard that he severely injured his neck and was forced by his doctors to wear a neckbrace while performing. Understand that Japan is predominantly Shinto and Buddhist and while they understand the meaning of the cross, its use here is in the tradition of Classic Rock Opera and not a digg at Christianity. Remembering that Babymetal came from the Idol group Sakura Gakuin, the crucifixion here was to symbolize the death of the Idol Princess and her Rebirth as a Metal Goddess!! And this show was the day after Suzuka's 16th birthday. How did you spend your 16th birthday?? LoL!! More to this little group than you thought??? Put your Kitsune UP!! Po!

"DEATH" is also often exchanged with "Des/Desu" in Manga. The "th" sound is not native to the Japanese language, so when death is spoken it sounds like Des. In this performance, Des/Desu also can have a more inclusive meaning than simply, "I am". It can be "I Am", "We Are", "We All Are". So during the performance *Babymetal DEATH* means; "I" (Su, Yui & Moa), "We" (Su, Yui, Moa & the Kami Band), "We All Are" (EVERYONE is BABYMETAL)... Which is why we are "The ONE". \m/(^.^)\m/ *Babymetal DEATH* \m/(^.^)\m/

⚡ 💀 💕 / 💀 💀 💀 For most Japanese, the only exposure to Christianity is through popular culture like movies, anime or manga comics. Only about 1% of the population are Christian. Or in BABYMETAL's case, through the imagery used in Metal concerts. I don't believe any disrespect was intended, and most folks understand this is metaphor and spectacle. I've told this story many times, but I saw BABYMETAL open for Korn & Stone Sour in Chula Vista, CA back in 2017. The concert was on Yui's Birthday (June 20th). There were Korn fans on either side of me, who were expecting something called BABYMETAL to be pretty mellow. They opened with 'BABYMETAL Death'. The look of shock on their faces was priceless. One turned to me and said, "I didn't think they were going to be so heavy!".

> For most Japanese, the only exposure to Christianity is through popular culture like movies, anime or manga comics. I'm not sure I would agree with this. AFAIK, many Japanese adopt Christian traditions for certain occasions, like white weddings or Christmas. Although I'm not sure how much they identify with the religious significance behind it. To my understanding they often just adopt certain elements of different religions, more or less just because they find them interesting or cool. I don't have any first-hand experience, though. It would fit the Japanese, though, they love to adopt elements from other cultures and adapt them to their liking / needs.

I thought you guys would like this. My 16th birthday was nothing like this!! This is where SU-METAL became our METAL GODDESS QUEEN and an IDOL LEGEND!! If you ask the girls who is there musical influence, they will say with a big smile METALLICA. METALLICA showed them how amazing metal music can be, and the girls respect them a lot. If you google METALLICA & BABYMETAL you will see some cool pics of them together and the time BABYMETAL opened up for METALLICA. BABYMETAL dreamed of some day opening up for the legendary metal group Metallica that dream came true at the Gocheok Sky Dome in Seoul. As one might expect from the trio, they absolutely rocked the stage! Kicking off Metallica's Seoul show on January 11, 2017, BABYMETAL opened the night with an explosive 6-song set. This should not work (CUTE= KAWAII+METAL= BABYMETAL ) but it does nicely. Welcome to the journey that is BABYMETAL, ENJOY THE RIDE..... I am sure someone has explained this but the song is a pun on "Desu". The song is an intro of the band and in Japanese when you introduce yourself you say, for example, "SU metal desu" . I don't understand the exact translation but consider it like saying "I am Su metal, if you please". Most Japanese speakers don't actually pronounce the 'u' in desu so it sounds like 'des'. Which sounds like 'death' in English - get it. Babymetal Death is a play on Babymetal Desu.

Basically Babymetal shows like this are only in Japan, you need a certain crowd size (or in this case a special occasion) to put in so much time and money for a show like this. So what you see in the west are more the stripped down version of Babymetal. Which i would definitely recommend. Every single time. For the second and third album release Babymetal had a bigger show in Europe/US: second album Metal Resistance (2016) was at Wembley Arena in UK and third album Metal Galaxy (2019) was at The Forum near LA. They had their medium show, which is still ridiculous. Their is a lot of prep needed to do a big show like that. Something you might not think about/expect: Babymetal had a stage set build in Japan for training and design purposes. Then had a company in the UK build the exact same stage, centimeter/inch-perfect in the UK. While this is cheaper and more time efficient than trying to ship it from Japan to the UK it does mean it's a budget increase from building 1 stage to 2 ! Or more likely 1.5 or something. You have to remember you can't have these girls go stay in the UK for a month or whatever time they need to come up with a design, build of the stage and practice for the show.... because the girls were still in school ! So they had to be in Japan.

It's quite badass and quite genius.

I wouldn't interpret any religious meaning into this. I think it's just some mindless fun. The backstory is that Su is being reborn as the Metal Goddess at her 16th birthday. They just celebrated it in a big and Metal way. The cross is often used in Metal (mostly particularly heavy and dark variants), so in my opinion what they are doing here is just taking the clashing of Metal and cuteness to the max. Anyone who knows BABYMETAL knows that they are definitely not trying to mock or criticize anyone or anything.

Reborn on 16th B-day from Metal-Girl to gettin a Adult and Queen of Metal.....was usual for every B-Day from Su to make a Concert (but that was an unusual Concert BC she turned 16) So it`s a transformation from beeing a child to a Woman. I still look everywhere to get a grap on this DVD/B-Ray but I dont think I can get it without real Japanese skills outside Japan........

Legend One-Nine-Nine-Seven (referring to the year of Su's birth) It is the story that, receiving the legendary corset from the god of Metal, she abandons being human and shall be reborn as a goddess. The gene which has been determined from ancient time is destined to be guided, boarding on the ark of time. The apocalypse prophesied The DOOMSDAY. Towards it, There remains... little time.." Basically this show was the final step in BABYMETAL transitioning from Idol group sub-unit to independent metal band - it was also Su-metal's final step in her transition from J-Pop Idol - she was sacrificing her human existence and life as Suzuka Nakamoto the J-Pop Idol to be reborn as Su-metal the Metal Goddess chosen to lead the Metal Resistance.

They used to do this song as a show opener. It was a different song 2017-2018. Now it's pa pa ya normally. Also this was supposed to signify the death of innocence and the birth of the darkness of the angels of the fox God or something. Like killing Su, and out of it comes the Queen. It's a crucifixion

Your faces during the reaction were like "What is going on? This is so heavy, but also so cute" hahahahahaa You mentioned the fact that they had that intro before the song, they do that a lot, during that concert they had like 5 videos, untill a few years ago they would have some videos with very cute manga/anime style drawings telling stories, especialy when Yui and Moa were about to sing one of their duets as Black Babymetal, it would be saying things like that were being enchanted by someone, or pulled to the dark side, and things like that, then on the next song it would be one of Su solos, so they would have some video about her rescuing them from the dark side. On their birthday concerts they would play videos with real pictures of them as babies, kids and then young teenagers already at the Sakura Gakuin idol group. It's common for them to use their big arena concerts to evolve their lore, one concert will continue the story of the previous ones, especialy of their world tours. In october 2018 they had the Dark Night Carnival concert that was the dark side of BABYMETAL, and then in june of 2019 they had the The Sun Also Rises concert, that was their light side of BABYMETAL, the concert where they introduced the Avengers (the 3 girls that rotate on the 3 spot on the stage) and also, at that concert they have a video talking that when they acquire both the ligh and the dark side, a new dimension appears, so now that they have both sides they can see this dimension, this dimension name is Metal Galaxy, and that is also the name of their third album, announced on that concert. Here an example of those cute drawings, it's from this same concert, from Gimme Chocolate, but the actual live photage and audio whit the intro, instead of just the photage from the song like on the MV on their channel: streamable.com/3gpj81

The large shows like this are more like a play. If you watch from beginning to end you have Babymetal (All three), Babymetal Black (Moa and Yui), and Babymetal Red(Su solo).. Moa-Metal and Yui-Metal wander off into the wilderness and they are captured . They are change from the good way as the songs they sing reveal. Su Metal had warned them of the dangers and rescues them. At shows end they are rescued. Stuff like that but only in their large shows. Smaller venues get 45-60 minutes. This is all from memory and I'm ancient but they are a great project for Amuse Inc.

The chant is actually "Des", which is Japanese for "I am". It's a play on words, a double entendre for the English "death". Her old self dies and her new self says "I am".

Someone is probably already mentioned this, but the song is them introducing themselves they are saying baby metal desu. It's just a play on words whereas desu would come at the end of a sentence in the Japanese language. I.E. I would introduce myself as battousai desu. If I remember correctly this is just after her 16th birthday and she is being crucified to be reborn as a metal goddess. Which she definitely is. The giant statue in the background is Mary Magdalene mother of Jesus. Babymetal desu!
@xVirgosMerlotx
@xVirgosMerlotx 3 жыл бұрын
The song is a play on words, in that the word "desu" means "i am" or something along those lines, but it sounds like the word "death." So the song is "BabyMetal Death" or "We are Babymetal" as a way to introduce themselves to the world.

The theme is 1997, the year of Sumetals birth. She needed to die and be reborn as the Metal Goddess! The Death chant is actually a play on words for the Japanese real meaning. Desu is “I am” or “We are”, so screaming BABYMETAL Desu sounds to English speaking ears like BABYMETAL DEATH! lol. Really it’s just We are BABYMETAL. Makes sense when the girls say it Moametal Desu etc. All in all a very cool performance.

@mr.osclasses5054 3 жыл бұрын
Soooooooooo, what did you guys do for your 16th birthday's? You didn't get crucified, I bet....posers. (Kidding!) The opening is a sample from Metallica's "One", so it's funny you mentioned Metallica right before that. This is Su sacrificing her life as a J-Pop Idol to be reborn as a Metal Goddess. The neck brace is an tribute to the drummer from the band X-Japan who actually hurt his neck headbanging so hard during performances that he HAD to wear it when performing or he could have killed himself. The Japanese love a play on words, and what they are saying before she is crucified is basically introducing themselves. They are saying their names like, "Su-Metal desu", only the word desu in Japanese doesn't pronounce the U, so it almost sounds like "death" in English. They are saying "I am Su-Metal", "I am Yuimetal", "I am Moametal", "We are BABYMETAL". There is also no "th" ending in Japanese because most of their words end in vowels, so they were taught to stick their tongue between their teeth to make the sound like they are really saying "death". The statue looks like the Virgin Mary, but with Asian features, which fits with the whole crucifixion aspect. It breaks apart at the end as a tribute/homage to Metallica when they had their "...And Justice For All" tour where they had a statue of the Lady Justice break apart at the end of every show. This song is USUALLY the start of the show, or was for a few years, but they introduced it here, I believe, and decided the imagery with the statue breaking, the shock value, and all that stuff was too good to do immediately, so it was the very end of the show. They only have crucified Su on four occasions, I believe, with the last being for her 20th birthday back in December 2017. Also, #NotACult!

Basically theres a bunch of stuff going on in this video but none of it is super deep, its just convoluted because of your guys unfamiliarity with the band. This is a concert called Legend 1997. Put that in your hat for a second. And we will come back to it. This song is called Death. It is the song Baby Metal used to Open with. Its dark, people are screaming Death. And of course gets the crowd going. However its actually all a big joke. In Japanese you introduce yourself "Name" Desu. However Desu sort of sounds like Death. So basically its just the three girls saying "My name is Su Metal", "My name is Yui Metal", "My name is Moa Metal", "Our name is Baby Metal". It instead however sounds like everyone is saying Death which is pretty metal. So its a super dark sounding song that is just spelling out baby metal and the girls introducing themselves. Cute. Back to the Concert. This Song which Baby Metal usually opens with, they instead closed with it. They also had Su get crucified and the whole stage show as you saw. This fits into both the lore of BabyMetal as well as the importance of show. This concert was for Su's 16th birthday (she was born in 1997) and took place in her hometown. As for the Lore. The lore for the band says that Su basically allows the Fox God to take over her body so that metal can be made as a sacrafice. This particular instance was supposed to represent Su leaving her childhood (16 is very important in Asian and Japanese Culture) and becoming Su-Metal the Metal God. Yada. So just some concert fluff added to what is normally a somewhat funny kind of song that is never meant to be taken serious. Regardless metal as fuck.
