This concert was in 2013, and was to celebrate Su-Metal's 16th birthday which was (I believe) the day before. Girl 1: "So we all recently had our 16th birthday party. I had a party at home with all my friends. We played games and had a sleepover, how about you guys?" Girl 2: "My friends took me out for dinner, then we went to a movie, it was fun! How about you, Suzuka?" Su-Metal: "I performed a heavy metal concert, at the end of which I was put upon a cross by robed black-hooded figures, and crucified to be reborn as a Goddess of Metal, while 8,000 rabid fans chanted "DEATH" repeatidly." Girl 1 & 2: "..." *backing away slowly*

10:29 The only vocals in that track are actually the introduction of the band: "Babymetal Death", "Su-Metal Death", "Yui-Metal Death" and "Moa-Metal Death" as you can see here: kzbin.info/www/bejne/f4LVpJmtjNKJhMU .. While "death" is actually "desu" which means "to be" .. so they're introducing themselves "I'm Su-Metal", "I'm Yui-Metal", "I'm Moa-Metal" .. "This is Babymetal"
@cuttysark80173 жыл бұрын
And they say this is kawaii (cute) metal. "Babymetal Death" here is the last song in the concert and is used as a big messianic pun finale rather than the usual introduction. Headbanger and Akatsuki came before it and if you listen to all three songs together you'll get the context and the complete operatic scope of Su-metal leaving childhood behind, embracing sacrifice and finally being reborn as a metal goddess. Yes it's very silly, but so were Ozzie and Alice and it makes for great entertainment. kzbin.info/www/bejne/Z33VfYaDmtOEj9E This concert ("Legend 1997") was on the day after Su-metal's 16th birthday and as a present she is transformed from a simple Sakura Gakuin school girl and reborn as a Metal Goddess to fulfill the plans of the Fox God, and that obviously requires crucifixion. It was also a transition in real life for Suzuku Nakamoto as a few months earlier she'd graduated from high school and the idol group "Sakura Gakuin (Moa and Yui were still members) and had started to work full time on Babymetal. The use of the Christian crucifixion iconography here is a confusion and juxtaposition of death and rebirth. This is echoed in the chant at the beginning; "Death, Death... , Su-Metal desu"...etc. The "desu" sounds like "death" to Western ears (which is entirely on purpose), but in Japanese it means "to be" - so they are actually singing " I am Su-metal, I am Yuimetal, I am Moametal, We are Babymetal". So while this initially seems to be all about death it's also an affirmation of existence and being. Death and life/rebirth exist together. The japanese are far less precious about religion than most Westerners and take aspects of whatever religion works for them in a particular situation. The appropriation of the cross and the "Mary statue" here just serves the theatrical purpose to tell a story. Did I mention #notacult?

Great reaction. Any growling vocals are on a backing track - and that was a 'real' (as in physical) statue, not a hologram. Yes this has parts extended or drawn out for the show and the choreo. There is absolutely no reason why any Christians should get upset at this, it is pure theatre and they have just borrowed some gothic symbology and the sort of stuff metal bands have always used (just like western bands might use eastern symbols, just because they look cool) and what better way to symbolise death and rebirth, which is what they were doing ... and there are only about 1% Christians in Japan anyway. There is a translation of the intro video in the description which would have helped a bit with understanding what was happening: "Legend 1997. (referring to the year of Su's birth) It is told that receiving the legendary neck brace from the god of Metal, she shall abandon her human life and be reborn as a goddess. The bloodline which has been passed down from ancient times is destined to be the guide, boarding the ark of time. The apocalypse is prophesied DOOMSDAY comes There remains... little time.." Basically this show was the final step in BABYMETAL transitioning from Idol group sub-unit (it had this narrative running all the way through and even started with a lip-synced dance remix of their song 'Headbanger') to independent metal band - it was also Su-metal's final step in her transition from J-Pop Idol - she was sacrificing her human existence and life as Suzuka Nakamoto, a J-Pop Idol, to be reborn as Su-metal, a Metal Goddess chosen to lead the Metal Resistance. 'BABYMETAL Death' was the first track on the first album and was most often used as the show opener (without the crucifixion) - it is the perfect introduction - that is what the lyrics are:- "B - A - B - Y - M - E - T - A - L Death Death Death Death Death Death. Su-metal death. Yuimetal death. Moametal death. BABYMETAL death. Death Death Death Death Death Death." It is a play on words. There is no 'TH' sound in Japanese, so to a Japanese speaker death sounds like desu (the U is silent) spoken with a slight lisp. Desu means "To be - I am - you are - we are - it is" etc ... so in Japan you might introduce yourselves as "Sean Staxx desu" (I am Sean Staxx). All they were doing throughout the song was introducing themselves by name and introducing BABYMETAL by name - and 'death' is just the sort of thing you'd expect to be chanted by any self respecting metal band and their audience while the lead singer is crucified. There were a couple of homages in this performance too. The opening drum beat is an homage to Metallica's 'One' and the statue crumbling at the end pays homage to Metallica's Justice For All tour of 1989 where they also had a statue (Lady Justice) crumble at the end of their shows. The neck brace is a tribute to X Japan drummer/pianist/songwriter/composer Yoshiki who damaged his neck so badly headbanging that he has to wear a neck brace most of the time, especially when performing. On special occasions 'BABYMETAL Death' was used later in the show - Legend 1997 was the title of the show celebrating Su-metal's 16th birthday ... and they only crucify Su on special occasions. So far that has happened 5 times, the last was at Legend S in December 2017 to help her celebrate her 20th birthday - and that one had extra flames. And just to be sure #notacult

Ahh ok so does the backtrack growls? Lol and that makes sense in regards to the theater/rebirth aspect. I sometimes wonder what the reaction to this would have been if Babymetal was around and toured America in the mid-90s when Marilyn Manson concerts were protested by conservative Christian groups and Danny Castle was touring churches in the bible belt giving sermons about the Santanic influence of modern music by playing mostly out of context video clips in a pre-video internet era to scare congregations, this performance would have made amazing out of context propaganda for him. Thankfully with the passage of time that type of fearmongering isn't widespread or popular anymore.

> "I don't think Christianity is big in Japan." That's right. But, in general, Japanese often tend to use symbols and such for only one simple reason: Because it looks cool/badass. This is no exception. The actual album track (it's the first track of their 2014 released debut-album, btw.) in fact is much shorter. This "song" was mostly used as an introduction piece (what it actually is made for) at their shows back then. The performance you've seen was a special one. They've only done it at the "Legend S - Baptism XX" shows in 2017 to a similar extent.

@Bones12x23 жыл бұрын
This song kind of served as an introduction for the band at most of their shows for several years as well as the first album, its also a bit of a sarcastic pun. Babymetal loves to poke fun at the overly serious and brutal side of metal...while being super brutal at the same time. The song is called Babymetal Death and the girls each literally introduce themselves in the song and everyone chants Death over and over...but the joke is that Death in english sounds like Desu (they can't make the "th" sound well) in Japanese which means "to be" but is also used when introducing yourself...as in, if your name is John, and you say John desu, that means "I am John"....So saying Babymetal Death sounds to Japanese people like saying Babymetal Desu...which would literally translate to "It is Babymetal" or "I am Babymetal" So the whole song is basically a really badass and heavy pun. Plus, early on and still to some degree even now they always got a hard time from metal snobs for not being real metal...as if that matters...so stuff like this was also always a way for them to kinda flip the bird to metal elitists and be like....BET YOUR BAND DOES CRUCIFY TEENAGE GIRLS ON STAGE!!! SISSIES!!!

Where Su-Metal was chosen for the sacrifice she been referred to as the goddess. And yes it was on her 16th birthday that was way back in 2013. That particular word that comes after their name is 'Death' they'll say Su-Metal'death' , Yui-metal 'death' Moa-metal 'death' in their interviews too. - This is the third song of the "Trilogy of Death" (as fans have called it), You have seen the first and third song of the trilogy, the first being "Headbanger" which you did the other day. The one you have not seen is "Akatsuki (Unfinished)". - This was Su-Metal being sacrificed to be reborn as a metal goddess, giving up her former life as a J-Pop idol. - You are correct, this isn't some sort of religious statement. Less than 1% of Japan is Christian. The cross is more of a gothic symbol just used because it looks cool, its not like "fuck Jesus" or anything like that. - I think the statue was real, I think, not entirely sure though. - Now that you have seen "BABYMETAL Death", you can do a reaction to the BABYMETAL guide! This will teach you about the band, how they got started, who the girls are, and al sorts of other fun little facts and video clips. Definitely so a reaction to this, even though it is a longer vid, people seem to really like the guide reactions. I love how everything is in a complete frenzy after Su-metal reawakens. Pretty heavy stuff for a band that people accuse of not being real Metal. :-) That middle part is not that long in the studio version. But a proper crucifixion shouldn‘t be rushed. :-) I would agree that it‘s not the most interesting song to just listen to, but for its original purpose as an opener to get the crowd pumped, it‘s pretty perfect. I would be interested to know what that statue actually is (physically). Like you, I assumed it‘s a projection, but at some points you can see spotlights from behind passing it on the left and right, which pretty much rules out a screen or canvas. But I can‘t really imagine that they‘d let huge pieces of foam or whatever rain onto the stage at the end, either. Also, it looks like slow motion, which is pretty hard to do physically. :-) If you like ballads, I‘d recommend checking out „No Rain, no Rainbow“ for a change of pace and yet another side of BABYMETAL: kzbin.info/www/bejne/pnXKoqJsm8ifn7s If you do, better pause it a few times (even though it‘s going to be hard), as it does get blocked sometimes.

The visuals are cribbed from other "traditional" metal bands(the use of blasphemy and satanic imagery has a long history in metal) theis was before they carved out thier own visual style and were relying on the long history of metal for thier shows. The statue that crumbles at the end is an homage to metallica and thier And Justice For All tour where they had a lady justice crumble at the end of the shows. This song may also be a musical homage to metallica as it has some real thrash feel to it.

@@paulbroady4141 That doesn't sound less plausible to me than offering a neckbrace to Su while singing Ave Maria. And the reference to Christianity is there whether it's Mary or not, it's a crucifixion.

So many wrong assumptions by reactors to this video, 1997 is not the year of the concert. The statue has nothing to with Christianity. If people knew their metal they would know that the statue is a tribute to the band Metallica, as were the opening licks of the song.

Yea I’m finding out more about BabyMetals influences and it’s really cool to see how many bands they’ve used for inspiration and paid homage! 🤘🦊

Well, I wouldn't say it has "nothing to do with Christianity", since this show starts with an "Ave Maria" :D

musically you were ready for death, But honestly its the performance of Death that folks ain't ready for. Too much religious iconography for them. That and a kid on a cross is too extra for most. Add in the neck brace a nod to X Japan, the statue (not an image) is religious but also a nod to Metallica. They broke the liberty statue during their (And Justice for All) show. Way back in the day. The dieing and the rebirth part IMO means they got the religious understanding right. Jesus died and came back the in full son of God glory. Su died a mortal idol singer and came back a metal godess. true understanding. Jpop singers carrers are short, like a mortals. while metal singers carriers are forever.

The song off the album is shorter . And who cares what christians think , they can't even verify what they believe is actually true . Until they can it's all just fiction that's no more real then the BABYMETAL mythology the group invents for their shows .
