This never gets old. The sheer balls to go out there, to a potentially hostile crowd, with both confidence and persistence... the way Su keeps milking it during the GC break, insistent they sing the ridiculous lyrics, but yet GETTING HER WAY, and then the moment the crowd turns fully in their favor, during Catch me if you can, is just pure magic. By the time their 30 minutes is over, BABYMETAL changed the western metal scene forever, and about 50,000 metalheads joined The One. Watching the various fancams, you can hear the crowd slowly getting louder, and louder, and more frantic. Its one of the coolest damn moments in metal history, seriously. They wanted MORE, they were calling for encores. Thats power. "See you!" LOL. Three high school kids holding one of the biggest metal festivals in the world hostage for a half hour, transfixed. The look on Su's face during basically all of Megitsune tells the entire story, they had them, and they KNEW it. Usually shes pretty stone faced, but that very real smile the entire time, she was loving the moment. IDZ is a masterclass in having a crowd eating out of your hand. Pure joy coming from all three girls, no nerves anymore, no reservations, just cutting loose and drinking it in. The wide shot of the ENTIRE crowd with their arms raised during the "We are" call and response, is THE coolest thing I have ever seen. I love this so much.

As Su says in that 2021 interview, it was her favourite concert moment from her career. Yui and Moa had to go back to school a few weeks after this and I've often wondered whether they had to write one of those essays on the first day back that had the title What I Did On My Summer Holidays! That final song, IDZ, has been one of my favourite performances of theirs for many years and always makes me feel proud of them and their guts in facing 60,000 metalheads...and absolutely killing it. They sold more merch than any other band that weekend.

@@tonygriffin_ Aye. Theres another interview out there too, a text based magazine article, long form in japanese, where she gives a similar answer in 2017/2018 or so, more detailed since its a text article. She mentions how the crowd was going so hard near the end it made her step it up, and you can see it, by IDZ she is performing at 110 percent and cannot... stop... smiling. I prefer those interviews, they say so much more off camera than on. I couldnt tell you what it was called tho, as it was translated from a japanese magazine.

When 3 young teenage girls backed up by heavy hitter metal musicians can make hard-nosed headbangers get excited, and mosh around to songs about chocolate, a game of hide & seek, ending bullying amongst other, you know you've got something special. 😁

I can't imagine the absolute guts and nerves of steel they must have to perform in front of all these people. These 3 14-16 year olds facing 60,000 metalheads in a foreign country but they still gave 100% and beyond, performing professionally and passionately. Babymetal truly is legendary, they had everyone by the throat with the whole performance. The whole band must've been so elated to be received so well. Up til this day I still rewatch their IDZ performance and get teary eyed. They're awesome.

Yes, I watched some reactors (The Thamesmen) see IDZ for the first time just yesterday and it was great to see their response and, of course, to watch the performance again - it still moves me every time to see them killing it. Su's happy grin at the end is so nice to see (Moa's happy grin is always there and Yui-chan was probably thinking about whether about where she could get some tomatoes). 🦊🤘🤘🦊

That's the part that gets me when I watch this. Seeing the girls just win the crowd over and cause the Kami Band to loosen up and stop worrying about whether it's going to go over, it's amazing. You can literally see them super uptight for the first song and change, especially BOH. But they see that the crowd is just fucking feeling it, and by the end they tear the place down. The crowd chanting for one more song is the highest praise they could get. This set should be required viewing at music schools like Full Sail or Berklee. Kobametal is a genius.

What gets me every time I watch this set is that the girls were so much more composed than the Kami Band. They had that look of "dude did we actually agree to do this? What if people hate it?" but by the time they get into Catch Me If You Can, they're sure the crowd fucking loves it, and it melts my heart every time. EDIT - also, RIP Mikio, I feel like he was the only one to just know that this shit fucking ruled from the start, and I was blessed enough to see him the first time I caught Babymetal unaware. He really got this audience amped up, and was a special talent. He's Starlight in the sky now, but I'm thankful to have seen him play.

Yeah that's the song where the Kami Band realized the crowd was on board for this, and they just fucking starting melting faces. I love this set, it's one of the greatest musical accomplishments I've ever seen. They're SO timid at first, unsure of whether they're bombing, but within 2 songs they realize the crowd is eating it up, and just go on an absolute tear, and this crowd did the entire world a favor by embracing and encouraging Babymetal The girls were like 15. I can't even imagine being in a touring band, let alone "hey, go play this really risky gimmick in front of 60000 people" at that age. Su-Metal and the gals are absolute legends.

It's one of my favourite performances and Su's smile and wave after shouting the last "We are..." and hearing and seeing the crowd respond always makes me smile. That's why I put the interview with Su at the start, because she explains how that was the moment they knew they'd made it outside of Japan. The fancams I found weren't as good as that official clip so I used that...though that means the video can be viewed worldwide, except for in Japan due to copyright. 🦊🤘🤘🦊

I mean yeah, I guess you could call this a breakout concert... but fans fail to mention that a significant portion of this crowd was already familiar with BM's material, and they were hyping the rest of the crowd up. BM had been viral on YT, you can literally hear people singing along to Megitsune. Japanese pop culture was catching fire in the western world long before BM emerged, and a lot of people had been paying close attention to anything and everything coming out of Japan. The most remarkable thing is that this is one of the earliest examples of the power of viral online marketing/promotion, and it's even more impressive considering that western audiences weren't even the target demographic, at least initially. I know it's fun to pretend like this was one of the most surprising moments in metal history, but with the gimmick they had and the band to back it up, there was no way western metal fans weren't going to love BM. Koba wouldn't have put those girls on that stage in front of that audience if he didn't already know EXACTLY how those people were going to react, make no mistake!
@tonygriffin_
@tonygriffin_ Жыл бұрын
I called it a 'breakout' gig because it was their first Metal gig outside of Japan. Kobametal didn't put them on stage, Metallica pushed for them to appear. I had been a Metal fan since seeing Sabbath in 1976 and was here but hadn't heard of them. There were about a 1000 people near the front who knew of them but the other 60,000 hadn't. Not sure what your list of negative comments is all about but hope you get to find more positivity in life.

The girls themselves consider this a big turning point in their career in interviews. First big metal festival outside of Japan, they had fans but unlike solo shows people are there for many different bands. So to go out in front of a massive crowd and one that's notorious for showing their feelings, I think if you can win them over you're prepared for anything.
