F.Hero received a phone call from Kobametal (creator, producor) asking him provide Rap lyrics for a Babymetal song. Of course he thought someone was messing with him! But, no it was real. He not only wrote the Rap lyrics, he provided input of Thai influences to the song. The beat/cadence of his rap is meant mimic the sound of the mortar pounding the papaya. Even as he and his wife were flying to Japan, he thought they tell him he wasn't needed. How would you react if a world famous music group called you up to have you provide writing skills for a song. Yes the song is about the Thai spicy papaya salad Som Tam. Thailand is a very popular vacation spot for the Japanese and Koreans. Also spicy in Thai food has a whole different meaning than Tex-Mex and Mexican food. Spend a year in Thailand.

Actually, it was an email to his producer, from an interview (translated): the producer and the founder of BABYMETAL contacted Pan, my manager through email. I have no idea how did he find my manager's email. He then expressed that he wanted to collaborate with me. So we met at the hotel in Sukhumvit (a district in Bangkok) to discuss. At first I was worried that he could be a scammer, but after I searched him I learned that he really exists. When we met, he is a really kind man, a kind brother. I also met Mr. Takeshi, so it was three of us. When I first heard the demo, I was wondering why the song keeps screaming PAPAYA. So I asked him if he wants to make a song about Somtum (papaya salad), which he said yes. I was curious why a Japanese would want to make a song about Thailand. As I investigated, (translator: it means he asked Koba about it, not really went full investigation. It's Thai's way of exaggeration) turned out that Koba really likes Thailand. He has visited and stayed in Thailand plenty of times. I guess at one point he got to try Somtum and then had an idea to make a summer song about it. So I think if he wants to make a song about Somtum, we probably should also add Morlum music into the song. I recommended Mag to him since he is the producer of [other Thai artist] and he is really good with Thai instruments. When I wrote my rap, I tried to give the impression of Somtum in the making, so I used repetitive words like knock knock, box box, pok pok to imitate the sound when papaya is crushed in a mortar. Then I sent the rhyme to them and they really liked it. They didn't tell me to change anything. Everything went so easy and smooth." [But the rap is not all about Somtum] "They are the one who gave me a brief that they wanted a song about festival. I felt like I want to incorporate the lyric about life in there. Somtum is like a life, it has many flavors, sometimes it has happiness, sometimes it has suffering, it's the way of life that I want to add in it.

You got it - its a summer party song about a spicy green papaya salad, F Hero's rap was about mixing the ingredients, but was also a metaphor for adding spice to life to make that more tasty too. The male vocals ... surely that was F Hero, you must have seen him doing them at the end even if he was below stage at the start (actually this had the studio audio dubbed onto the live footage, but that is understandable as the video was released within a couple of days of the concert - they didn't hang about with this one).

As a younger guy I touched with heavy music but only the charty stuff, none of the album fillers, just hits. Rainbow, meatloaf, priest, ted nugent, yes and a few others but I never really grabbed onto any of these bands core music. With Babymetal I have broke this trend. There is nothing I have listened too I don't want more of the same. The insane drumming, pace, energy in their music just grabs me by the guts and the passion from Su's singing with it just makes it irresistible.

Nice & thanks again from Japan 有難う💛。This is a MV of live footage with studio sound. At the actual venue of "Awakens - The Sun Also Rises" show in Yokohama Japan, Su-Metal shouted "Come on F. Hero!" to summon him. And at the end of this song she screamed "Thank you F. Hero!" then the three girls bow deeply towards him to show their respect. That scene makes me happy. If you do search in KZbin with keywords "babymetal 2019 forum papaya" you will find videos showing many of 17,000 American audiences shouting and swinging towels at the Forum, LA on Oct.11 last year. That scene makes me happy as well.

Even though F. Hero killed his rap part and provided ideas about incorporating Thai musical elements, a lot of BABYMETAL fans absolutely hated him when the song came out. There's an interview out there with him where he says he was super nervous flying out to Japan for that performance because he had read the online comments and thought he'd get booed and represent Thailand poorly. Very humble for a guy who is probably more famous in Thailand than BM is in Japan. PAPAYA is now a fan favorite and BM is performing it on mainstream Japanese music programs to convert new fans. So F. Hero proved to be a "fuckin hero" like his namesake in this case.

I think it's not exactly about Papaya. It's about a summer party eating papaya salad. They do have a few songs about food. Gimme Chocolate of course. And Uki uki midnight is about eating sashimi late at night while on tour. Awadama Fever is about a mint flavored bubble gum time machine. Japanese metal fans called Gimme Chocolate 'bubble gum metal'. Moa answers every question with food. What do you like about country x? Moa: the food. Yui loves Tomatoes and Moa chicken. But look at the poor girls they are obviously starving :) But they have 50 songs so they have songs about everything. They don't have a lot of traditional metal lyrics but there are some. Rondo of Nightmare and the Japanese version of Elevator Girl are very metal. Catch Me If You Can is very metal and not metal. It's about playing the Japanese version of hide and seek with monsters.

Su is rocking ZARA embossed ankle boots. : ) Kano was only 14 here when she first started performing with BABYMETAL. At the time she was also President of Sakura Gakuin, a role both Su and Moa held during their time in that group.
