When people imagine LOTR they don’t imagine these weird af outfits with bizarre armour, they imagine the films, or the books, which is pretty much mail because it’s a story heavily inspired by Northern European myths and stories. If we consider lore accuracy, then the films are the best when it comes to representation, not being too fantasy while clearly being fantastical. The Mouth Of Sauron in the films in menacing and creepy, this one just looks weird.

When I said ‘mail’ I was referring to armour used by warriors in the setting, not specifically clothes that the Mouth Of Sauron wears. When it comes to the Mouth Of Sauron, it’s believed he’s a descendant Black Númenorean, so he’s not Haradrim or from Rhun or whatever’s going on with the Variags Of Khand. Also, yes, Harad and Rhun aren’t based on European peoples, though we’re far more sure of Harad then Rhun because if I remember correctly, the Haradrim are actually given proper full visual descriptions. But just because it has those peoples, doesn’t mean it’s not inherently a European centred story. This is well illustrating by the fact we know next to nothing about them, pretty much the barest bones at best and scantly anything of their culture, and story wise they serve purely as as enemy. The Variags we know literally nothing about, apart from the fact that their name *might* refer to the Varangians, which is what the Kievan Rus and Byzantines called Vikings and Danes. Plus the fact that if I remember correctly they’re noted to use axes, so that’s potentially another link to the Varangian/Viking theory. So that could throw a wrench in Rhun being a distinct culture if Vikings are their neighbours, but still. A perk of the fact we know next to nothing about them is a benefit for some, as it allows us to basically write Fanfiction. Rhun as depicted in Peter Jackson’s films are based off the Sassanid and Persian Empires and the Haradrim on Bedouins, and fan-works have turned the Variags Of Khand into Samurai Mongols. What I love about all of these is that, though they’re clearly based on these peoples and real history, they also have a flair of fantasy to them, they’ve got a lovely grounding in reality but are still thoroughly in fantasy. Of course the Orcs aren’t going to wear perfectly period gear, as you say they’re corruptions and as such they should look wrong, off and corrupted. But a corrupted version of something, doesn’t mean it doesn’t resemble it in any fashion, it’s just messed up. To use an example coming back to the Mouth Of Sauron. If the Mouth Of Sauron is a Black Numenorean then that means he’s a descendant of Númenor, which is based off Atlantis and if I remember correctly the only note on their armies is that they were more infantry focused, like the Imperial Romans, so we’ve clearly got a Greco-Roman vibe and aesthetic to the Numenoreans. Thus, the Black Numenoreans could look like a dark, twisted form of a Greco-Roman aesthetic. We have got an illustration of a Numenorean helmet from Tolkien himself, and it’s strange but it’s weirdly grown on me, especially with artworks using it in combination with a Greco-Roman aesthetic. So unless Sauron hates the Númenoreans so much that he makes them wear something so alien, (which admittedly would somewhat be in character, but arguably in the film depiction of the Mouth Of Sauron he’s more then done that) they probably wouldn’t look like this. The reason I like the film depiction so much is that it’s a perfect middle ground, you’ve got the fantasy mixed in with real culture and history, and still being firmly grounded. You could toy with the fact that in the lore, man came from the east so it’d then mean that the most ancient of human cultures lies in the east. Something I’ve toyed with is making the Easterlings look somewhat ancient or even somewhat Egyptian. I think my key problem with the art-style, though, primarily with Mordor, is that it’s too alien and removed from those cultures, and if they do herald from an actual culture, it’s too removed or doesn’t make sense for the area.

@@brandonsmith9098I doubt that, colonies like those in Umbar and even further abroad are often even more traditionalist and conservative then their home nation, so as to maintain their identity in a foreign land far from home, which is only compounded by the fact that they’re Númenoreans and are an extremely prideful people, so there’s no way they’d intermix with the ‘inferior’ culture of the Haradrim or Easterlings. They’d probably find themselves adopting certain practices, Teutonic Knights style, but they’d thoroughly seek to maintain their identity as Númenoreans, as Ubermensch. So arguably, they’d look even more Númenorean then the Númenoreans on Númenor itself.

This is incredibly fascinating as an artistic take. I think in some weird way it's incredibly faithful to the books - the way you've got these robed officials in Barad Dur plotting and scheming on behalf of the Dark Lord. It reminds me of the descriptions of Barad Dur in the books having all these, "courts and chambers." But for what? There were lots of interesting hints that the upper machinery of the Dark Lord's dominions were very sophisticated.

One good note on this game is that, atleast it was faithful to the books and timeline of LOTR. With the exception of making Sauron the eye (if they didnt do that, it would of been amazing lore wise). Gollum did get imprisoned in Mordor by Sauron and his telling of the Shire and Baggins is what started the War of the Rings. He was personally allowed to live by Sauron because Sauron, being a Maia, felt Gollum had a part to play in the world. He was caught by Aragorn and then sent to Mirkwood and from there escaped and got lost in Moria, where he would then meet the fellowship as we see in the movies and book. Overall, they did a good job at making their story not interfere with pre-existing lore of Tolkien's world. Unfortunately the story sucked but nevertheless points where they're due!

This game is basically that game where you run around as a monkey whatever it’s called. Wtf are they thinking all this potential and we get a gollum game and a dwarf sims game that is coming wtf. Shadow of war is great even if it’s not entirely accurate apparently it’s entertaining . I’m glad I found that game.

How many people thought that Gollum was going to eat the bug? In the book, Gollum mentions that when he met Sauron, Sauron had "only four fingers on the black hand, but they were enough". He then licks his hands in pain, implying that Sauron personally tortured Gollum for information. That means that Gollum is the Only living being mentioned in the books who personally met Sauron, though under extremely unpleasant circumstances.

They always had the fellbeasts, they just didn't let them cross the anduin until they decided to march on Minas Tirith. The only reason they used them to get to the shire was for stealth to not let anyone know they had left Minas Morgul, if they had left on the fellbeasts it would have been obvious the Nazgul were hunting something and people would have rushed to find out what.
