Of course, anything written by Bach is worthy of consideration and respect. And Paul Barton's interpretation is excellent. But not all pieces are equally interesting. This is my humble ranking of the inventions and symphonies: THE BORING: 39:02 Invention 11: Repetitive, gets nowhere. 08:38 Symphony 3: Starts well, but then goes nowhere. 15:29 Symphony 5: Boring, the left hand is soporific. 32:32 Symphony 9: Tedious. 38:00 Symphony 10: Repetitive, gets nowhere. 47:57 Symphony 13: Repetitive, gets nowhere. THE CORRECT: 00:07 Invention 1: Formal beauty. 02:29 Invention 2: Formal beauty. 14:05 Invention 5: Formal beauty. 23:17 Invention 7: Formal beauty. 29:27 Invention 9: Sweet agony. 52:57 Invention 15: Formal Beauty. 01:25 Symphony 1: Formal beauty. 10:42 Symphony 4: Sweet melancholy. 22:16 Symphony 6: Formal beauty. 25:15 Symphony 7: Formal beauty. 45:19 Symphony 12: A simple motif of 2 semiquavers and a quaver which is repeated and developed in a very varied way. 51:42 Symphony 14: Formal beauty. THE BEST: 07:15 Invention 3: Gallant. 09:47 Invention 4: Mysterious precipitation. 18:20 Invention 6: Syncopated quavers with moments of great beauty. 37:16 Invention 10: Joyful and playful triplets. 43:54 Invention 12: Positive and full of energy. 28:18 Symphony 8: Cheerful and cordial. 40:17 Symphony 11: Sweet melancholy. 54:16 Symphony 15: Dramatic triplets and fusas. THE BEST OF THE BEST FOREVER AND EVER: 27:18 Invention 8: Catchy, bubbly, delicious. The best invention. 46:46 Invention 13: Full of beauty. 50:13 Invention 14: Optimistic and vital. 04:43 Symphony 2: Cosmic beauty. The best symphony.

Bach inventions were first introduced to me when I was around 11 years old by one of many piano teachers. They were so much fun to play and still are. Now as an older human, I am listening as I do my homework. At times, only Bach can keep me focused on my studies as my brain wanders.

Great music and very well played. In particular, the approach of pairing the two pieces using the same key works very well as a performance idea. Many of the these pairs are complementary - I particularly like the C minor pair as stand-alone pieces and together, as here, they work well. This collection of pieces is little played or discussed but Bach's genius is most evident here. It is a shame that they don't get more airtime as many of them are great pieces. In particular the Sinfonias are gems - the C minor, the E flat, the E, the G and my personal favourite, the delicate G minor. I also have a soft spot for the D minor Invention which is a very satisfying piece to bang out at volume on the piano or harpsichord. A recent jazzed-up version by the David Rees-Williams Trio contained a beautiful version of this - well worth listening to.

Just a note of caution while looking at the video for Invention #8 (particularly in slow motion): In measure 16, the first note in the right hand is a Bb, and it appears Paul played the A immediately below it. I mention this because I struggled with the fingering of measures 15, 16, and 17. After repeatedly watching them played in slow motion, I noticed the error, which had me scratching my head as I tried to work out how to play them myself. The funny part is that the A worked ok with the harmony well enough to not be noticeable. In spite of this, the video is really helping me figure out how to play this invention, and I am very thankful Paul put these recordings up for us to enjoy and learn from.
