My father introduced me to bach, around 20 years ago. I have heard maybe 6, 7, 8 versions of this Cantata. This one is my favorite. --- Ahh, to be honest, there will be a moment when I start appreciating others even more. Until then, my heart is open to let in the gospel: "HERR, so Du willst Sünde zurechnen, wer soll bestehen?" and "Meine Seele wartet auf den HERRN, von der einen Morgenwache bis zu der anderen."

Bach wrote this after the great fire during his time in Mühlhausen in 1709. With the whole town and two churches burned to the ground, scholars believe it was performed open air. Every family lost love ones. Imagine these devastated people doing church service in the midst of smouldering ruins listening to this.

It's the fist time I can hear such a beautiful interpretation of this Cantate which is one of my favourite. The conductor, singers and instruments are really serving the deep meaning of the words. In the third movement: "Ich hoffe auf sein Wort" they brightly manage to express the highest human feelings and questions about its place in the universe ! It's breathtaking ! And what a growing jubilation in the last movement "er wird Israël aus seinen Sûnden erlösen" !! Thank you so much !!!

No need to force yourself to religion. Also as an atheist you are allowed to enjoy this music. For me the deeper thoughts about God as given in the music of Bach are (not always easy) having the same inpact on humanistic thoughts about the world where we live in.

@@pseunition6038 I find these answers so ridiculous. I am a very engaged christian, meant in front of Jesus-Christ, not only church. Why "forced" to become christian? if the synaesthetical experience of a well done text, well done music and well done interpretation is not allowed to help someone to faith, how will it be with the preaching of a guy who most often is a hater (at least a pastor hates his organist). The Spirit blows where He wants, not where you think it should!
