Qui Bach ha raggiunto uno dei vertici mistici presenti nelle sue innumerevoli composizioni. È una musica che non è di questo mondo, ma appare come un riflesso dei Cori Celesti. Straordinari come sempre i musicisti. Questa loro interpretazione esalta il carattere mistico implicito nella Musica di Johann Sebastian. Non finirò mai di ringraziarli per il dono preziosissimo e inestimabile che fanno al mio cuore... 🙏🙌💘🕊️

I dare to think that the choice of Biblical passages is some sort of oblique comment by Bach on his examiners: the twelve who did not know what was going to happen, and the blind man being the only person to possess insight.

True God and son of David, Thou, who from the bottom of eternity have already contemplated the affliction of my heart and the suffering of my body, have mercy upon me! And with Thy miraculous hand, that chased away so much evil, grant me help and consolation. Ah, don't pass by ignoring me; Thou, Saviour of all men, came out to help the sick, not the healthy. For this I partecipate in Thy omnipotence; I see Thee on this path along which I have been abandoned, even if blind. I grab onto Thee and won't let Thee go without having Thy blessing. The eyes of everyone are turned to Thee, Lord, Almighty God, and mine in particular. Give them strength and light, never leave them in darkness again! Your signs in the future are the reference point of all their works until a day, with dead, Thou'll decide to close them again. Christ, Lamb of God, who takes away the sins of the world, have mercy upon us. Christ, Lamb of God, who takes away the sins of the world, have mercy upon us. Christ, Lamb of God, who takes away the sins of the world, give us peace.

Mark 10 46-52 And they came to Jericho: and as he went out of Jericho with his disciples and a great number of people, blind Bartimaeus, the son of Timaeus, sat by the highway side begging. And when he heard that it was Jesus of Nazareth, he began to cry out, and say, Jesus, thou son of David, have mercy on me. And many charged him that he should hold his peace: but he cried the more a great deal, Thou son of David, have mercy on me. And Jesus stood still, and commanded him to be called. And they call the blind man, saying unto him, Be of good comfort, rise; he calleth thee. And he, casting away his garment, rose, and came to Jesus. And Jesus answered and said unto him, What wilt thou that I should do unto thee? The blind man said unto him, Lord, that I might receive my sight. And Jesus said unto him, Go thy way; thy faith hath made thee whole. And immediately he received his sight, and followed Jesus in the way.

Apparently Johann Sebastian Bach was vying for the cantor position of the Thomaskirk in Leipzig and was up against a Herr Christoph Graupner no slouch at all! Stiff competition. They both had to perform their selections at the same service probably the Sunday before Ash Wednesday which was the last time they could perform without breaking the tempus clausium. In the Lutheran tradition they had certain restrictions - enforced by all due to the penitent nature of the period before Advent and Passion Week.
@herrickinman93034 жыл бұрын
Tempus clausum. The position was cantor of the Thomasschule and Director of Music of Leipzig, responsible for the music of all the town's churches, not just the Thomaskirche. I believe there were 4 or 5 churches. Half the council preferred a candidate who would be more of a teacher than a composer. Graupner and Telemann both had university degrees. Bach did not. That was the main reason some on the council preferred Telemann and Graupner over Bach. The position was offered to Graupner, but he replied that he couldn't get a release from his employer; his employer had actually bribed him to stay on by offering him more money. The position was offered to Telemann, but he declined. Telemann's employers also offered him more money to stay. Bach himself had successfully used similar tactics to get his ducal employers in Weimar to pay him more.

THIS CANTATA DEFINATELY HAS BEEN INFLUENCED BY SOME FRENCH WORK, PERHAPS EVEN AN OPERA BY RAMEAU. THERE ARE LAPSES INTO TYPICAL FRENCH STYLE, BEFORE HE RETURNS TO HIS GERMAN STYLE.

Agreed. In fact, I would say that you cannot understand Bach's music outside of the French and Italian influence.

This and cantata bwv 22 were the audition pieces Bach took to Leipzig and auditioned for the st Thomas job. They are both very interesting pieces. He came into town and rehearsed both pieces and performed them. Was paid 20 talers...and the only reason he got the gig was because the two guys they wanted did not take the job. Bach was considered by the committee as a mediocre candidate. Shows how dense they were. These are pre Leipzig pieces and very interesting...different and fabulous.

The tempos are too slow, which makes everyting drag. With all the dynamiics at hand, this in itself is an achievement. It seems, however, that in this performance (and so in BWV 22) Mr. Kuijken sees Bach primarly as work. If he wants to express the suffering of Jesus by that, he has succeeded very well.
