I hear a lot of recordings of the Brandenburgs, but there is just something about this particular group that always seems to elevate their performances a cut above the rest. Original instruments are part of it for sure, but it's more than that, and I can't quite identify what it is, but, whatever it is, these are always superb.

That's the only performance i like of this piece. It sounds fun, joyous, and not a mess of sound like other attempt at higher tempo by other ensembles.

What is it about recorders that add an inestimable quality of civilisation to music? Oh of course Bach gave them the most beautiful lines. Reminding us of our Renaissance that provided the necessary steps to his fulfilment of Western music as it still stands; our best exponent: J.S. Bach.

Maybe it's my speakers? I would have liked to hear the recorders come through more distinctly.

I'm also having trouble hearing things that I know are there. Try turning down your bass a bit. It helps. That violone sounds a bit overwhelming for this small ensemble in this acoustic setting.

KZbin seriously compresses the sound--we are working on a version with some small changes that will sound more even. It's customary in CD recordings to use spot mics on the recorders (and other instruments) and turn the volume way up, but we chose to keep the balance more or less the way it sounds from the first few rows of the audience. You could go either way. If you amplify an instrument or a section, it's like putting a magnifying glass in front of the smile on the Mona Lisa. But you could definitely rebalance the sound and there's a case to be made for that. The complete version will be online later today.
