Bach - Cantata Auf, schmetternde Töne BWV 207a - Van Veldhoven | Netherlands Bach Society

'Auf, schmetternde Töne', performed here by the Netherlands Bach Society for All of Bach, was played in Leipzig in 1735 to celebrate the name day of Friedrich August II, Elector of Saxony. Although his court was in Dresden, important occasions were also celebrated in Leipzig with ‘extraordinary’ concerts. The libretto of this cantata is a typically eighteenth-century - and for modern ears rather exalted - ode to the virtues of the Elector and the ensuing prosperity of his subjects.

Another superb performance by the NBv. The ensemble and their society has breathed new life into the cantatas. I was once involved in marketing the Harnoncourt project for a respected record company, and which for its time was groundbreaking. But now I find a great resurgence of interest in the Bach cantatas, with a fresh, immediate and more direct approach and rapport with the audience, which is very exciting. This Bach cantata has particularities, mainly at beginning, a little different from others, either due to the more intense use of percussion instruments, in addition to some sung part being a little more syncopated. The choir and orchestra direction are fantastic. Soloists have superb voices. The subtlety and elegance of the music is magnificent.

Cette cantate profane est donnée rarement .elle offre un magnifique duo qui dialogue avec le basson pour composer en fait un trio très élaboré. Cette belle symbiose des voix et de l'instrument est un moment exceptionnel .les deux chanteurs, très expressifs, sont remarquables ! La qualité de la voix , le tempo , l'expressivité, et l'entrée finale des cuivres ! Remarquable également l'aria du haute-contre parfaitement maîtrisée. Ah! Les belles nuits de Hollande! Pas facile cependant de jouer en plein air. L'impeccable Thomas Hobbs en fait un peu les frais, et sa voix d'airain peine à garder son lustre sur une partition d'une complexité sans limite. Manque la voûte en ogives si propice à la déclamation et au chant. La matité de la voûte céleste aura cela de pratique qu'elle permettra sûrement au Kantor assis à la droite de Luther d'en saisir quelques bribes...Et de sourire de satisfaction. Un superbe concert et une exécution quasi parfaite réalisée par des gens qui ont compris qu'il ne fallait surtout pas "interpréter" Bach mais le jouer "tel quel" avec simplicité et modestie.

Wonderful performance. I must admit that I pay more attention to the sacred cantata than to the secular. I particulary enjoy the important voice given to the bassoon in this piece. Maria Keohane is a favorite of mine; her facial expressiveness matches that of her voice, whe is clearly absorbed in the music. Her duet aria with Matthew Brook is a treat. Maestro Van Veldhoven is missed for his direction and for his obvious enthusiasm for the music.

Cette cantate à été joué dans les jardins du Café Zimmermann, que était en dehors de enceinte de Leipzig, juste après la porte Grimma. This is wonderful! I've been on a tour of Bach's complete works recently. Does anyone know how much of the Brandenburg Concertos are in other pieces? Interesting how much Bach repeats himself (albeit with different instrumentation and, as here, singing).
