In spite of the hardships, challenges, bitterness, trials and suffering of many in the 17th and 18th Centuries, Bach offered a glorious glimpse into Heaven on so many occasions which thrill us over three hundred years later. Given the insanity, pathetic mediocrity and overt silliness in which we find ourselves in the 21st Century, we can find a respite for our weary souls and minds through Bach and be uplifted with the glorious hope of eternity with our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. I am absolutely convinced that Bach's works will be part of the heavenly repertoire for eternity.

My wife and I will never forget our beloved high school chem teacher, Preston Q. Boomer, who taught us to love Baroque music. He built his own very impressive 2500 pipe organ with a "chapel" to put it in, on his property. He would play Purcell's Trumpet Voluntary while we brass musicians from high school band would accompany him. We'll never forget that experience up at his place in the mountains of Bonny Doon, CA back in the early '60's. Decade after decade Preston would invite his students up for concerts and parties. I discovered this great work during Holy Week and Easter of 1960 when I was in the military stationed at Fort Lewis, WA. When I was separated and returned home to Maryland that June, one of the first things I did was go to a music store and get an LP of the work. The cover had both the German and an English translation. Sadly, I let that LP get away from me over the years. But I love the work, especially the chorus "Kommt, eilet und laufet:" where Mary Magdalene and another Mary go to Jesus' tomb only to find it empty. And they run to Peter and the other disciples. Praise be to God and God's son, Jesus our Savior.

I recently DISCOVERED the Netherlands Bach Society. And I mean Discovered, as in finding something beautiful and intriguing.

I found them too. But courage to you. They sing with lots of love to Jesus and God. Hard to stay atheist among such love. Even harder when you read the text (translation available).

@@aliasreco Atheism is much closer to humanism and "uncommanded" emotions than any religion will ever be. Kindness is a philosophical position, not the result of stone age religious views.

@@TheAtheist22 Thanks. But you do risk to find Jesus behind the music.. Bach did. And many others did too. (not all of the players and listeners to be honest)

@@aliasreco I’ve played Bach all my life. Apart from the beauty of his music, never found any Jesus. Bach did not “find” anything. It was given to him through religious education, which in my opinion, is child abuse and has to stop.

@@TheAtheist22 I'm sorry. I found so much. And it certainly was no child abuse.

My Kitty Cat Juju is Greek Orthodox and tells me that Bach's Easter Oratorio is as beautiful as the. "Christos Anesty!" His baptism was a fright since Juju does not like water!

Beautiful. We very much enjoy early music performed on period instruments, and are also trying to produce, record and present similar concerts, videos and CDs.

Pour faire polyglotte : thank you very, very much !

Dificult to think a most perfect performance. The "Voice of God" (Bach in words of Wynton Marsalis) is very well represented by this incredible musicians and his genius director. Thanks and congratulations from Argentina.

CAPTIVATING & PRISTINE PERFORMANCE! The video and sound are top quality. There is great musicianship wealth here: The prelude with the trumpets and orchestra gives the solemn aspect, the succession of upward and downward phrasing in the music is so moving, a contrast of texture, pace, volume, sparkle & pristine soloist voices, instrumental palette, rich melodic resonance, the chemistry between the performers and the director was excellent, both subordinating themselves to the music. The closing of the Oratorio in 'Preis und Dank with the Choir, trumpets, wind instruments and orchestra gives a GLORIOUS conclusion!

A couple thoughts. First, it is very clear to me that this wondrous process of recording all the works of Bach is so much more than performance. I love watching the performers, because I believe what is evident is their very "tasting" of all they are encountering in this wondrous music (including the texts, of course). Second, and I realize this is a very personal perspective, but as a Christian and a Lutheran, it thrills me to know that in all Bach's works, especially those given to sacred proclamation, there is a heart beating in the composer who wanted his hearers to know the pulsing reality of God come in the flesh. May I say, I pray that for all these marvelous musicians and all who hear them. Blessed Easter!

Easter Day, the NBS conducted by Van H, and the Easter Oratorio by Bach - it doesn't get any better than this. One keeps coming back to this particular performance. So fitting; so uplifting; the world renews itself (one can hope).

Superb performance, yet again. Once again, it adds to the pleasure of listening to be able to hear the different parts, vocal and orchestral, so clearly. Finally, the measured tempo for Sanfte soll mein Todeskummer was spot on. (Albert Schweitzer called this aria something like 'eternity represented like a field of corn waving in the breeze').

Another splendid performance by the Netherland Bach Society. This Easter Oratorio is an austere and solemn piece that opens and closes with bright, trumpet led orchestra and chorus. Nice recording and video.

I have been reading a bio of the life of Bach today and to then tune in to one of his many great works is sublime. It is incredible that we can still enjoy the blessings of this modest genius around 300 years later. This Society is to be commended for their faithfulness to his works and maintaining the high standards required by the respective compositions. Ernie Marshall
