The astonishing opening of the cantata never ceases to amaze me, even more so when realizing Bach was only in his twenties when he wrote this at Weimar and it was a hundred years before even Beethoven would do anything remotely similar. Small wonder that Bach himself so prized it that he recycled it in his mature Leipzig years for the Marcuspassion.
@MichaelCWBell3 жыл бұрын
Yes indeed. I own most of the genre and it is amazing that the first say, 20% chronologically are so full of marvellous examples. That over time, for a time Bach lost dare I say a little of that initial energy, yet there are many many beautiful cantatas of later times of course. Something extraordinary about this first aria.

I have listened to J. S. Bach (at least once) every day since 1977... and I think I have become a much better person for the experience! Soli Deo Gloria: The Latin for "Glory to God alone.” Towards the Dämmerung (twilight) of his long musical life, Bach said, "Weine nicht um mich, denn ich gehe dorthin, wo Musik geboren wird!" ("Do not cry for me, for I go where music is born!" 😇). To paraphrase Giuseppe Verdi - whose great operatic example was Mozart - "Bach is the only one..." Mike D.

Hard to believe he was churning these out on a weekly basis with such high quality in addition of all his other music. Sad to think about how many more have been lost to the winds of time.
@wolsch34354 жыл бұрын
Bach researchers suppose that around 80-100 cantatas "have been lost to the winds of time". At a certain point after a lot of struggles with church and city authorities in Leipzig Bach refused to write more cantatas. With 300 of them he had already enough for every sunday in the church.
@jaikee94774 жыл бұрын
@@wolsch3435 It's still possible to discover unknown Bach works. For instance in 2004 several arias by Bach were found in Weimar in a box of birthday cards among holdings of the Anna Amalia Library. My favourite: BWV 1128 was found in an attic in the town of Frankenmuth, Michigan USA in 1934. 18th century German migrants brought it there unknowingly.

Bach was required to supply only one cantata per month at the Weimar ducal court for which this cantata was composed, and there he had professional musicians on the court payroll at his disposal. In Leipzig, where he was expected to supply music for every Sunday for each of the town's three main churches, he was not expected to supply new music or even original music. Even if he had time (between administrative duties and private lessons) to compose a new cantata for every Sunday, it's very unlikely that there would be time to prepare performance copies (by hand) and rehearse it in time for next Sunday, especially when you consider that the Thomasschule singers were not professional musicians. According to his famous letter to the town council, many of the resident students at the Thomasschule could barely sing a hymn tune, some were not fit for music at all, and the rest needed training before they could be usable. Like his predecessor Johann Kuhnau, Bach had to rely on the voluntary services of Leipzig university students to perform his cantatas. If you've ever performed a Bach cantata, recall how many weeks (not days) it took to rehearse it.

First time I'm hearing this cantata, but oh my goodness this was incredibly touching and satisfying. That instrumental section of the first aria must be one of my favorites I have heard recently from a cantata and is something you want to play over and over, because you want more of that world of beautiful tonality and the satisfying harmony Bach only lets blossom out for a moment. For a first impression, it felt like Mortensen and the orchestra articulated this first aria perfectly, I can't imagine any other version

Translation of cantata from german to english. Widerstehe doch der Sünde (Arie) Stand firm against sin, otherwise its poison seizes hold of you. Do not let Satan blind you for to desecrate the honour of God meets with a curse, which leads to death. Die Art (Rezitativ) The nature of loathsome sins is indeed from outside very beautiful; but you must afterwards with sorrow and frustration experience much hardship. From outside it is gold but if you want to look more closely it is shown to be only an empty shadow and whitewashed tomb. It is like the apples of Sodom and those who join with it do not reach God's kingdom. It is like a sharp sword that goes through our body and soul. Wer Sünde tut (Arie Who commits sins is of the devil, for it is he who has produced them. but if against its despicable mobs with true devotion you stand firm, sin has at once fled away.

Lars Ulrik Mortonsen created a dynamic, even a beat through the dominance of the harpsichord, which probably perfectly reproduces the baroque world of Bach. This strong rhythm carries you away and wonderfully reinforces the message "Widerstehe doch der Sünde“
