Cello Suite no. 6 in D major, performed by Sergey Malov for All of Bach, is exceptional in all respects. In this last suite, which is also the longest, Bach makes the instrument ascend to heaven. He does so by using an extra fifth string - ‘a cinq cordes’, as Anna Magdalena Bach described it in the manuscript. The fifth string lies a fifth above the A string, which is usually the highest. You might even argue that Bach allows the cellist to transcend their own instrument.
Recorded for the project All of Bach on November 4th 2016 at the Gashouder of the Westergasfabriek, Amsterdam. If you want to help us complete All of Bach, please subscribe to our channel bit.ly/2vhCeFB and consider donating bit.ly/2uZuMj5.

As a cellist who enjoys playing this piece and has many recordings of it, I'm surprised to find myself say that this is one of my very favorite renditions - phenomenal virtuosity and musicality, and when played on the original instrument it makes a lot more sense musically. Obviously the five strings, but even the timbre lends itself well to the style, particularly with his baroque embellishments. I'm incredibly heartened to see 3/4 of a million views for this fantastic musician!

Wow! As a professional cellist I’m flabbergasted. I’ve seen/heard the Sixth Suite performed on the cello piccolino (smaller sized cello that is played the normal way between the legs) but never on a violoncello da spalla played as an arm cello. I’m so impressed. Playing this Suite on a standard cello is a challenge because it was written for a five stringed instrument with a higher E string. Without that top string you have to do all sorts of gymnastics with your left hand, which, if you have a medium to smaller sized hand, is tiring and sometimes downright painful.
@rodom5391
@rodom5391 5 жыл бұрын
The violoncello da spalla or cello of the arm is a small cello on the shoulder, used by some composers such as J. S. Bach for his Cantatas de Leipzig, which in his version of five strings serves to interpret his Suite for solo violoncello No. 6. The violoncello da spalla was created to be performed by violinists (little experts in the interpretation of prawn, with the instrument vertically and held between the legs) since it was performed placed on the shoulder and chest, and was larger than the of the current viola. Some researchers believe that the 6 cello suites alone were actually created for this instrument

Dear Rodo the viola da spalla has only 4 strings. There is no such thing as violoncello da spalla. This one has 5 strings, it's a VIOLA POMPOSA. If the tuning was the normal viola's CGDA plus the E string of the violin you'd get violino pomposo.

This is the most musically satisfying interpretation of this piece that I've ever heard. Every note in the parallel lines is exactly in its place, in terms of no matter tone, emphasis, relationship with other notes in the melody line or in the chord, or color, rhythm. And all these came out completely naturally, as if directly out of his body, as if it is the natural human breath - all, the solid base and the flourishing soprano, the improvisational passing notes. @dudeforcaster8630 5 жыл бұрын
@@donnewmeyer3133 Not trolling, just pedantic. Violoncello literally means "little big low pitched stringed instrument" which is commonly shortened to "cello" . The violone or basse de violon is the predecessor of the cello whose lowest string was tuned to b-flat and larger than the current size of the violoncello, hence the suffix "cello" attached to the violon (N.B. It is not violin, but violon). Also, the endpin only came into common usage in the mid-nineteenth century.

Musically inspired, seamless, and simply beautiful. This instrument brings clarity while offering a depth and warmth of tone and facility that allows new ways of hearing the work. Bach sings with a new voice! I think the old man would be pleased.

When you realize they had cellists capable of this in Bach's day, you can kind of see how the viola became the ugly duckling of the family. Both violin and cello are so wide in range and usage that the poor viola is always stuck playing (pun intended) second fiddle.

I know everyone is talking about the instrument, but let’s take a moment to appreciate the playing itself. I thought it was a beautiful interpretation, and he had an amazing balance of taking time and keeping the pace of the piece up. My teachers would always tell me the most difficult thing about movements the 3rd suite prelude and this one is that they are difficult to interpret. Once you’ve think you’ve found your favorite performance of a movement, you will find another one that you find to be even better. And that’s the thing with Bach. There is no such thing as perfect, just different. That’s why there are classes dedicated solely to Bach himself and his music.

What a delicious (and very late) discovery this performance is! I see CELLO and click on it - and it took me a mo to discover the finer details of such excellent, extra-ordinary and beautiful playing. I didn't 'watch' at the beginning, just listened in rapture - then wondered - and voilà, the excellent surprise. What a perfect artistry and what an incredible instrument. Thank you so much for sharing this gem.

The smaller, more nimble, higher-ranged instrument really handles this suite better (to say nothing of the virtuoso playing it). Even in the greatest recordings on cello, you can always “hear the struggle” in this suite in particular. Here however, the limitations are considerably reduced and everything is available to be done full justice. The Sarabande is smooth as butter, the Gigue is light and acrobatic, everything just sounds more free.

This suite is the greatest gift we were given as cellists. Its beauty trascends any known before. Malov's ease on ornamentation is superb, i had seen very few musicians that have this ability to ornament like Sergey does. The cello da spalla sounds here almost like a medieval or renaissance viol on the right hand attack the musician does... Amazing
