One of the best performances of the Bach Chaccone. Note the excellent phrasing and correct tempo.

Feel the power of Soviet Viola school
@miguelmarquez41925 жыл бұрын
I wonder if i wouldve been a better violist if i learned that way. My education lacked theory. I feel like more emphasis couldve been placed on that and scales.
@Musicienne-DAB19954 жыл бұрын
@@miguelmarquez4192 Go and watch Jascha Heifetz testing a young violinist on all his scales. If you believe your education lacked theory and scales, you are probably right. For all the faults of the Soviet Union (and many are grievous), they produced some outstanding musicians.
@miguelmarquez41923 жыл бұрын
@@Musicienne-DAB1995 i know EXACTLY the clip youre referring to!!! Thats what it should have been, but my generation was the beginning of music programs losing funding, so they wanted to churn out song players, not kids who know their instrument throughly top to bottom. Kids three years before me had a better, well-rounded foundation than i did. I had great technique, a big bold sound, but couldnt tell you what made the scale i was playing c melodic minor. I was just going through the motions. Not knowing prevents you from composing, improvising, and jumping into another instrument.

If Bach and other great composers had known violists of this level I'm sure that the viola would have be better explored in that time! Bravo!
@Musicienne-DAB19955 жыл бұрын
We do have to credit Bach with pioneering the viola as a virtuoistic solo instrument, since Bach himself loved playing the viola. Have you heard Brandenburg No. 6? Cantata BWV18? The famous "Wachet Auf" Aria features violas, as well as other great pieces.
@nicolasscaraboto83555 жыл бұрын
@@Musicienne-DAB1995 I agree. But I meant that the viola could have been further exploited over the centuries. And one of the reasons for this may be the scarcity of great violists. Why would anyone compose something sophisticated if there was no one who was capable of performing? And why would anyone devote himself strongly to an instrument that does not have a great projection? In fact, it's a relationship with causality in both directions: the existence of great instrumentalists stimulates composers to explore the instrument, on the other hand, the existence of a vast and sophisticated repertoire stimulates the dedication of instrumentalists. But surely there are other factors that explain why an instrument is more or less explored.

Bach himself played both violin and viola. Of the two, he loved to play the viola in Chamber music, because it allowed him to enjoy both sides of the harmony. Other violinists who played viola include: Mozart, Beethoven, Mendelssohn, Paganini, Schubert, Zukerman, Vivaldi, Dvorak, Menuhin, Elgar, Haydn, Vengerov... The list goes on and on.

I never wanted to be a violinist. My teacher had no violists so i lost my chance at cello. Still sad. Violas great, just another push from an adult one way rather than the direction i wouldve loved. As kids some of us dont have the balls to say "what your class needs this year isnt my issue, im sittin with a cello or you can have one less student in a program that's already failing."
