Likes and dislikes are irrelevant. There is absolutely no doubt about the level of sublimity of the composition, singing, playing here. Even the last few bars of it are enough to reveal the sorrow and triumph of that very moment related in this movement. Knowing that is enough for me. Thank you for your appreciation. I also share the sentiment about Scholl. He is by far one of the best Bach interprets who understand and get into the spirit of his music.

The moment when you turn on a youtube-video without reading the full title and the second the singer starts singing you recognise him! :-)

I'm sure the person who voted down was just in such a hurry to click on thumb-up that his/her finger flew on the wrong button.... :) NOBODY CAN DISLIKE any of Andreas' singing With all the terrific talent we have around us (lucky us!), he still is one of my alltime-best-loved singers - world wde. Thank you Eser, for your careful work - it's even more amazing to see the score AND hear the singer/musician... Peace - even to the 'tumb-downer' :)

Is Prégardien (elder) the conductor? I though Prégardien's singing was on the Sigiswald Kuijken recording...

It sounds like similar to Adagio of Albinoni . Remo Giazzotto borrowed this strain for his famous creation ???

Very helpful, but the score doesn't exactly correspond to the version and ornaments used by Scholl :). (noticed it because I am working on this air myself). However, this vid is very useful for study purposes : keep up the good work!

ainhoa, that's one of the points of ornaments - the performer comes up with things that aren't in the score. ;)

I wonder if this inspired Beethovens op 110 third movement

Yes, Duarte was in the mood for trolling a bit. All for a little fun. :D Needless to say that we all envy Scholl's terrible and flat voice :P

alto clef is stupid, considering the range of this aria. treble clef works just fine! However, I cannot find any fault in your choice of recording. It's difficult for Andreas to be anything but sublime.

People used alto clefs for any part intended for alto, even if it meant spamming ledger lines.

I think this is a recent version by Scholl. Try the 1996 one with Scholl and the petite bande, you might prefer it
