Bach was an Italian, and a Frenchman, and a German - musically speaking. In his ‘Italian’ concerto BWV 971, here performed by Christine Schornsheim for All of Bach, Bach follows the model from across the Alps, having three parts (fast-slow-fast), imitating the continual alternation between tutti sections and solos, and using ritornello (a sort of refrain to keep up speed) in the opening section.
Recorded for the project All of Bach on 15 February 2019 at the Bartolotti House, Amsterdam. If you want to help us complete All of Bach, please subscribe to our channel bit.ly/2vhCeFB and consider donating bit.ly/2uZuMj5.

In this so difficult moment for Italy... it's a really nice gesture to publish Bach's ITALIAN Concert right now on youtube. Bach's music is undoubtedly German, but the influence of Italian Baroque music, Vivaldi's in the first place, is very great. True art knows no boundaries and enemies, but only brothers.

Lovely execution! Her hands look so relaxed, the fingers seem to touch the keys only when they're meant to, such control in her playing! Quel talent ! Brava !

Or Scott Ross, for that matter, or Kenneth Gilbert... Schornsheim is definitely among these best-of-the-best players--her work is exquisite. But one must acknowledge that there's a community, across time, of virtuoso harpsichordists, all in full control of their instruments, who listen and react.

Wow I'm stunned by this. I always thought I preferred it on piano. But the way this is played on the harpsichord in this performance is amazing! All the different shapes in the semi quaver passages are crystal clear, there's musical space between phrases (pianists seem to rely on the tone to help with that), and the use of the different manuals in the 3rd mov is fascinating and adds a lot of colour. I've learnt a lot just watching this. Thank you.
@herrickinman9303
@herrickinman9303 2 жыл бұрын
FYI, Bach composed this work for a 2-manual harpsichord. The choice of which manual to play is indicated in the score by the designations _piano_ and _forte._ The performer didn't just pull her manual choices out of her ass.
@andrewgraham1418

@@herrickinman9303 Of course the performer didn't. Not everyone is knowledgeable about the scoring conventions of the 1700s. The listener before is simply exclaiming their enthusiasm despite some ignorance, while you are behaving like an arrogant prick.

The use of an almost-buff-stop-like timbre for the walking eighths in the Andante is brilliant. The harpsichord becomes a string ensemble of pizzicato support for a superb soloist. Schornsheim should have much wider international acclaim.

I agree, and it shouldn't be surprising that Bach sounds best on the instruments he wrote for or at least had in mind. This holds true for most composers, with Beethoven being probably the biggest exception by far, since the instruments he had in mind were severely mismatched with what he had to write for (reportedly, he complained a great deal about the qualities of the available pianos, whereas most other composers more-or-less happily made do with what they had, or in a few cases were actually able to make or at least commission the instruments they wanted).

Wonderful use of the (buffed) lute stop for the ostinato in the 2nd movement! So few performers do this. I have been spoiled by the first performance I can ever remember of this, which used a (nonbuffed) lute stop for the same purpose, but unfortunately was on cassette tape (and you know what that means . . .), and every performance I have heard between then and now completely neglects to do this.

I thought am I going crazy??? No one notices???? virtually every other It Conc on YT, there is some kind of metronomic reference going on.... something steady... you would think, this piece was one of my YT comments with way to many ellipses...., ...., ..., every 1/2 sentence~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~~~~~~ ~ ~ ~ ~~~~~~~~ ...

@@caesarsneezer6992 If You look up J S Bach Italian Concerto,... you will see 1000s.. if You search long enough, (admittedly YT search has been optimized for very popular videos for more ad revenue)....try Italian Concerto by Keith Jarrett , Adras Schiff, Helma Elsner or Wanda Landowska, Jean Rondeau, Kenneth Gilbert, Chiara Massini, and one of my all time favorites by Tammy Wu (no andante) at age 8 on piano. In the 1950's up to 1980s people seemed to perform it much more often with a regular metronomic beat, appropriate to the tempo characterization for each movement.... I am seeing that lately, performers are interspersing quite a few fermatas, even if small, in spaces where, they seem to me, to ruin the flow of the piece. Apparently YT no longer tolerates links to other YT videos nested in comments.... So all I can do is point to the search terms.
