this is a piece that I have listened to more than 1000 times, more than 20 versions, and Milstein's version is always the best.

I don't even like it that much. Sounds "nervous"; not only speedy, but it lacks breathing.

Although , IMHO,his most precise or best-recorded version of this amazing piece, Milstein's performance here shows an utterly phenomenal sense of "line" and a feeling of the interplay of multiple voices that leaves me begging for more! For me, he makes a single violin speak with the authority and polyphonic grandeur of a pipe organ! BRAVO! Thanks to Mike Matesky, Paul Luscusk, and Steve Anderson for inspiring me to find it!

his control over his violin is beyond amazing, his tone is always beautiful and not the slightest bit squeaky, and his dynamics were wonderful. the difference between legato and staccato bowing is clearly heard and the dynamics make this piece exciting!

1:30 Bach meets Van Halen. Joking aside this is possibly the best version of the E major Prelude I’ve ever heard. The clarity of articulation, voicing and overall vitality are phenomenal.

This is one of those performances that brings an uneducated listener to a sudden realization of new beauty. It's as if I have never before heard the violin and Bach makes the experience of sound unbearably, excrutiatingly wonderful. I'm begging for mercy. More!
@radagast198615 жыл бұрын
Love this performance because he keeps a very strict tempo which is something a lot of people don't do on this piece, but is required for the baroque style.

I'm learning how to play this myself, and I'm having some trouble making transitions between 1st and 3rd position. Anyways, I've heard other violinists, such as Heifetz and VM, play this partita, but I think Nathan Milstein plays it the best! He has such a clear, pure technique, that I think he has to be one of the greatest violinists of all time.

My breath is taken away. I have been a violin player for 7 years and never once have i heard the violin have such charecteristic. Especially from 1:30 to 1:38 This certainly disproves the idea that Heifetz was the best. But also Heifetz has unique style to himself like most other violints and the true opinion of an artist should be from self to self. But truley this is the best interpetation of the piece I have heard.

I also believe this, among all the performances of this Prelude I have encountered, is the most dynamic, harmonious, and the most "complete". I also adore the beautifully performed version of Szeryng (also on youtube), although they are really totally different in style. Still, both are amazing.

That is a very romantic, 19th century idea, I think. The violin is very capable of joyous, exuberant laughter as well as tears. I think a true master is one who can make it fit whatever emotion the music demands. If it needs to cry, cry it must, if laughter is called for, that must be rested from it, and, if anger is the one you want ... well, a violin can be very discordant when it wants to be.
