Clarity, lightness, body. The listener never fears for the performers and the work is uplifted for it. A half century of scholarship and instrumental development over the best efforts of the 1970s is so clearly heard here. The engineering is invisibly at the service of a recording for the ages.

This has become a yearly ritual for me. Thanks for uploading this uplifting and beautiful work of Bach! This is how Christmas should actually feel like, when someone walks through the city, at least for adults. I guess it's too complicated for most kids and teenagers, but boy this fills me with joy, in an age where presents and such don't have such impact anymore.

What a wonderful, uplifting performance of this masterwork! It has been a favourite of mine for the last 47 years, and I've enjoyed listening to many versions over that time. This offering ranks amongst the top for its spirit and musicality. It's great to have the English subtitles for the libretto, as well. I look forward to hearing the remaining five cantatas from the Netherlands Bach Society.

There is Joy in this music. The players and chorus alike are so enjoying each other’s performances. We see it and we feel it, even via KZbin. To have actually been present when this was music being created would have been ‘a never to be forgotten’ experience of a life time. Such is the power of Bach 290 years later. Praise be to God amidst the horrendous acts of violence unfolding each and every day.

i've probably said this before but for me these performances are near-definitive for most of the works I have encountered on this wonderful channel - some of the singers are just utterly perfect Bachians.Matthias Helm does wonderful things in Grosser Herr (and has a most unusual articulated trill technique I actually really love)

This was recorded in a very nice xmassy atmosphere and in the breaks there were chocolates and goodies. A very nice experience 😊. To me the recording does sound somewhat artificial compared to other AOB releases but I am very happy this got documented. 😊

Wonderful, but still only the first part of this oratorium. There are six parts in this. But regarding this first part, I have to say mr Sato and NBS are splendid in singing and playing this the best way.

I understand the difficulty of patience :) The other parts will definitely follow in the coming years. Bach composed the different parts of the Christmas oratorio for different days. This has made us decide to publish the movements separately. That way you will hear each part fresh again.

@@williamthomas7657 actually the NBS has already recorded several pieces with BWV numbers but are doubtfully Bach. In this case, the text survives but Bach's music doesn't, so it would be a reconstruction. Not sure about this one.

@@ariadne4720 BWV 246 (Lukas-Passion) was without doubt arranged and performed by Bach, but not originally composed by him. BWV 247 (Markus-Passion) however was composed by Bach, but only the Libretto survived; the music can be reconstructed partially.

Thanks! Indeed, we sometimes include works with uncertain attribution or works that have a relationship with Bach if they have a place in one of our concert programmes. Still, for our recording project we focus mainly on the 'real' works. BWV 246 is not yet scheduled for the time being, although it certainly would be interesting
