Very inspirational! Excellent playing.! Your videos are making me inspired to get out my WTC and try to play what you are playing. I’m still slowly working Prelude and Fugue No. 6!!!!! At least for me it’s a way to wake up the brain, as some of this material is too difficult for me to play at your tempos. It also reminds one of the excellence of Bach and his numerous compositions. Amazing.

I always loved this piece. Learned it when I was about 14 years old. Thanks for inspiring me to revisit it.

Hi paul, I was wondering if you could record again an interpretation of Chopin Ballade No.4? Your beautiful video is in the upright piano, I thing it would be amazing to hear you play that wonderful piece in the grand piano

At 1.5x the prelude becomes a gigue:D
@OrbiliusMagister

bw2082 well, 1,25 is enough to appreciate both the gigue tempo and the phrasing without seeing too frantic hands. On the other hand the organistic flavour of the fugue is enhanced if you set the speed to 0,75. Just try it.

Mr. Barton, can you explain the difference between a prelude and a fugue?
@adonisadmirer2752

A fugue is much more complex when it comes to structure and counterpoint. A prelude could well just be a simple melody that you enrich with clever voicing.

musical genie A prelude tends to be light and “airy” to create a sense of anticipation and get you into the mood to hear the meat of the piece (like appetizers in restaurants). A fugue, on the other hand, is very strict in form as you have a main theme (subject) and an accompanying theme (counter-subject) that shifts from one key to the next throughout the whole piece. As other comments have said, these are also more contrapuntal in nature whereas preludes tend to focus more on just one melody.

Lovely playing. This seems to be the correct tempo, but I have found other recordings by other artists such as Rosalyn Turek that are much slower. Why is that?
