A landmark of perfection combining German genius and Japanese thoughtfulness

Superb performance. I think Suzuki's interpretation of the St. John Passion is the best of all available ones. It is warm, intense, dry (without vibrato, with clean attacks) very flowing, with moments of sparkling brilliance and great emotional feeling.

There are no words to describe this music of unimaginable, unearthly, beauty and this magnificent performance. Regardless of one's religious beliefs, this music shows the immense accomplishments that the human spirit- the spirit of the universe itself - is capable of.

This music shows what human brains are capable of, bach just had a very creative mind and also a very good left part of the brain, the music is what happens in the middle of the brain...

Maravilloso¡

Just like you do not need to be a protestant to deplore the sufferings and massacres of the Huguenots… God has as much say in the creation of Bach's music as he had in all the suffering, torture and murder done in his name: none at all.

Suzuki has Christian parents and played the organ during church services. So he is well acquainted with the christian and divine music of Bach.

@Kethvan I also think that the B. Britten version is a very good one too. Sung in English, if you are not fluent in German you can follow the meaning of the Passion better and the emotional content of the words and music together do make a deep effect on the spirit, at least on mine.
@Kethvan14 жыл бұрын
@bigbono12 Agree! I had Benjamin Britten's version, unfortuntely it's sung in English (a bit awkward for Bach's works) plus it's not in the sound of period instruments, as seen here... The sounds of period instruments is essential in evoking the time of Bach and other masters of the Baroque era...

A bit too fast to my taste... but so wonderfully played ! Suzuki is a great director and an evidence Bach's music is universal and calls for what is the most fundametal in our humanity. Listen to Zhu Xiaomei Goldberg variations too. Listen to Glenn Gould, Murray Perahia, Hillary Hahn, Anner Bylsma or Philippe Herreweghe... You will understand what mankind is, and if God exists, it is in Bach's music.

herr..herr..

Save the Italian masters Palestrina (Missa Papae Marcelli) and Vivaldi (Judhita Triunphans) ... Despite the Venetian style (which Bach did not master in 1724) these cantatas are tedious and may have been copies of Italian opera oratories and Italian recitals translated into the German and attributed to Bach!
