@@markpeterson3220 Bach is amazing. I don’t think it’s fair to say that this is the “apex” of western music. Have you ever listened to a Mahler symphony, Beethoven symphonies, “La Mer” by Debussy , “Daphnis et chloe” by Ravel, Sibelius’ 7th symphony or “Finlandia”? My point is it’s useless to say that Bach is the “apex” of western music because there are so many more amazing and great pieces of music that has been written since Bach’s time. Saying that Bach was the “apex” is somewhat suggesting that music has gotten worse which I just think isn’t the case.

This video is so useful, especially for the phrasing of each part of this complex and beautiful work. This choir and director have resisted the tendency to push on the strong melody lines given to each part. They blend the melodies superbly. Well done. Bach never goes where you expect him to go. That's the measure of the man and the music.

Patrick Tobin Matter of fact - I know a few Americans who speak very, very clean, accent-free German (I'm a German native speaker). That seems to be doable for some. They speak just a little slower than Germans - but so very "pure" if you will. One can argue it does actually not matter whether you've got an accent anyway (I will always keep my German English accent for lack of talent to get rid of it). When you rehearse music pieces, you rehearse pronounciation as well, and so you'll be able to sing those very "purely" (for lack of a better word) as well. But most of all: Making this kind of music is so wonderful, it gets so deep and touches your soul.

Jesu, meine Freude in English: 1 Jesus, priceless treasure, source of purest pleasure, friend most sure and true: long my heart was burning, fainting much and yearning, thirsting, Lord, for you. Yours I am, O spotless Lamb, so will I let nothing hide you, seek no joy beside you! 2 Let your arms enfold me: those who try to wound me cannot reach me here. Though the earth be shaking, every heart be quaking, Jesus calms my fear. Fires may flash and thunder crash; yea, though sin and hell assail me, Jesus will not fail me. 3 Hence, all worldly treasure! Jesus is my pleasure, Jesus is my choice. Hence, all empty glory! What to me your story told with tempting voice? Pain or loss or shame or cross shall not from my Savior move me, since he chose to love me. 4 Banish thoughts of sadness, for the Lord of gladness, Jesus, enters in; though the clouds may gather, those who love the Savior still have peace within. Though I bear much sorrow here, still in you lies purest pleasure, Jesus, priceless treasure!

Agreed, Christina! By the way, I kindly recommend the appreciation of the work of a living classical composer dedicated mostly to sacred music: W. Ferdinand. I feel myself like a sort of non-official ambassador for his music - and, effectively, also one of his few supporters. He is very, very talented. You won't be disappointed. kzbin.info

Professional musicians doing their job. The music of Bach is not just beautiful music, it is about the vulnerability of mankind, it's search and longing.

Eine stimmlich perfekt ausgewogene Interpretation dieser Bachschen Motette, dazu musikalisch sehr engagiert und intensiv gesungen. Beeindruckend!

Wonderful articulation. This is an incredibly complex piece of music--difficult to perform not to mention that Bach exhibits his brilliance again! Words are pure injustice.

Wonderful performance! Was wandering around, searching for something else (BWV 147 to name it) when I stumbled on this one... Clicked on play and kept listening up to the end!
