This music has demands on fingering so far from fx Beethovens sonatas, and if you played this at age 14 you have learned to "navigate" the keys in a way which will help you in most other music. You may need to learn som presto things, too quite another "ball game".

This is an excellent harpsichord, the performance outstanding in showcasing the counterpoint and rhythmic nicety; and what a prelude! what a fugue! I never understand what people mean who find Bach’s absolute music “emotionless “.

Bach is played at his best when all the voices come out clearly like in this rendition.
@fergusbyett80884 жыл бұрын
Isn't it interesting that the harpsichord makes this much easier than a piano, even though with the piano there is control over each note's dynamic level.

@@fergusbyett8088 That's what surprised me.

Bach conceived of this music on the harpsichord and or organ, so it would makes sense it would sound best and clearest on these instruments. The nature of the rules of counterpoint, which he knew as well as anyone alive, make it such that the coutnerpoint is best rendered at all equal volumes per voice. That's why chessy MIDI bach actually sounds kind of good.
@DavidMcCoul Жыл бұрын
@@rdubb77 Exactly! And precisely my problem with piano renditions of Bach that utilize too much dynamic range, causing some of the voicing to be less clear.

I've loved this incredible prelude and fugue for over 45 years now, and Bart Jacobs' performance is wonderfully intense...perfectly fitting for these two remarkable (once separate, but now forever adjoined) pieces. This harpsichord has a nice, warm quality to it, which works well with this masterpiece of Bachian counterpoint. Go listen to Jacobs' commentary about this piece...his knowledge and enthusiasm will impress you too, as his extremely musical playing always does. // NBS, never cease...ever.

The inventions, sinfonias, and the WTC were written for harpsichord primarily.
@juliusvilfredhartung51504 жыл бұрын
Danger Russ I think music like the inventions was very much written for the clavichord, since the inventions where composed for Bachs sons and students. So, i believe the music was practiced in the home of Bach himself on clavichord and in the homes of the students. Thus the clavichord existed in nearly all layers of soicaty so much of the music must have been practiced and performed on clavichord.

bach take's a lot less physically (not emotionally lol) to play, so performers have more ability to focus on composing and controlling themselves. if you listen to someone like scriabin, say his op 8 or op 65 etudes, quite literally every single person performing them moves around like a madman, and why? because it's extremely fucking difficult, and you're not focusing on not swaying, you're focusing on playing the music. I get what you mean, and sometimes it's distracting, but if you really let that get in the way of a good performance I seriously feel you need to reevaluate music.

I *love* Leo van Doeselaar ! I´m a highly sensitive musician myself and letting all sorts of "silly" body reactions happen is key to my ability of playing actually beautiful and convincing music ! It´s not doing anything but letting go. You have to be very brave to show that - especially when your audience tends to see it as "affectation" ! : ))
