The way that mortality was viewed in the eighteenth century is expressed wonderfully in 'Ich habe genung', performed by the Netherlands Bach Society for All of Bach. Death was seen as a deliverance from the earthly vale of tears, and as a chance to unite with your creator. So rather than being heart-rending, the music exudes a subdued melancholy.

Wunderschöne und detaillierte Aufführung dieser perfekt komponierten Knatate mit tiefer doch herrlicher Stimme des genialen Basses sowie gut vereinigten und perfekt entsprehenden Tönen aller Originalinstrumente. It's all about finally leaving this terrible world with all it's hardship behind to go to a better place. It is triumphant as well. Death (in Christ) comes as a victory over this fallen world system.

@@aprilparkhouse4245 Correct. However, it strikes every modern native speaker as a misspelling. Perhaps the goal of this series is to replicate the original works as faithfully to the historic form as possible, in which case the original spelling does make sense.
