Obviously the guy who wrote this is a genius: Imagine you knew nothing about Bach, his life, his music or the history of musical appreciation: it would be immediately intuitively clear that the author of this sonata was a genius. Such are the works of Bach: Genius hearing it the first time around, and genius after uncountable hearings and intellectual knowing quite a lot about his oeuvre and life. You cannot kill a Bach piece!

There is nothing to fault here; musically the sonata is beautifully conveyed by the cembalo and gamba musicians. Strangely I never knew what I was missing from these works although this is another perfect composition. It may be entirely a case of sound: that the cembalo isn’t tenuous enough to satisfy the want of a higher register in the music.

Einfach wunderbar!

An inspirational performance! There are two sections of the Allegro moderato that are relentless for the left hand. A Hanon warmup helps. It's even more challenging for the gamba! I also enjoy playing this on the piano because of the dynamics which allows me to dialogue with the gamba. Bob van Asperen recorded this in 1990 on chamber organ with the great Anner Bylsma on violoncello piccolo.

Amazing music and musicians! However. I completely didn't understand the approach to recording. The balance (micing? room?) between instruments end up fighting instead of "conversation". Sonata written by Bach is for Viola? It was hard for me to understand what Viola is 'trying say''. And It's not because of performance of course We can also notice that dynamic got lost somewhere- it' all came out forte from the 1st to the last note. Yes, harpsichord dynamic is limited, but levels I think ruined the performance. Sorry for being bad guy here..

This one of six sonatas written for the Viola da Gamba (Viola of the Leg) a member of the fretted Viol family and forerunner of the Violoncello. Do not confuse this instrument with the much smaller Viola da Brachia (of the arm). The keyboard part is fully written out.
