What would life be without music like this? A long walk in the desert without water I guess. This music gives us water, again and again.

It is beautiful how the notes of each instrument come together for the same purpose: to cheer the heart, and, as Bach desired with all his music, to give glory to God. "Soli Deo Gloria." His music is a latent cry of the extraordinariness of the right focus on feelings; his good purpose led him to find the solution to great problems. Bach, without a doubt, is the best at expressing his feelings in the most sincere way. Why will Bach's music endure and has no rival? His decision to give the phrase: "The aim and final reason of all music should be none else but the glory of God and the recreation of the soul. Where this is not observed, there will be no music but only a devilish hubbub." Although it may sound strong, he has the authority to say it, being the man who wrote masterful works, one of the strongest arguments for all absence of faith. Bach is an example of perfection, diligence, and intelligence; but he struggled with many things as the sinful man that he was. His vocation encourages me to continue on my path of music and Christianity. Glory to God for Bach's music, and may it be an encouragement for us, whether we believe in God or not, to do what we love and believe with passion. Gary M.

The efficiency of Marten Root's technique is indeed amazing. The wonders of modern streaming and the internet allow me to observe close up the techniques and sounds of Root, Kuijken, and others of their caliber in ways not possible back in the 80's, when I was first exposed to period baroque performance by ensembles such as Musica Antiqua Koln in rare concerts. Thanks to Netherlands Bach Society for producing these great renditions of Bach.

Einfach wunderbar!

Can anyone tell me what model of traverso Marten has chosen? Is it a Naust? Marten's strength is he's a dutiful servant to the music, not to himself. There's not a hint of showmanship; as clean and stoic as the room. ❤🇨🇦
@baroquewindsАй бұрын
It’s an Eichentopf, probably the “Eigentopf” model by Marten’s preferred maker Fridtjof Aurin
@bachАй бұрын
That's correct: the flute is an instrument after Eichentopf, an ivory original which is now part of the collection of the instrument museum in Leipzig. Since the builder (Fridtjof Aurin) had to make the necessary adjustments to this model (for example, the instrument is made of ebony instead of ivory), he calls this instrument not an 'Eichentopf' but an 'Eigentopf'
@davidriggenbach6672Ай бұрын
I'd love to see a serious analysis of the first movement, it is so hard to make sense of the phrases, could it be possible the work originated as a duet?
@bachАй бұрын
Please find an explanation on the work on the AllofBach-website: www.bachvereniging.nl/en/bwv/bwv-1034 This kind of chamber works could be seen as duets between a solo instrument (i.c. traverso) and the continuo group (i.c. gamba and harpsichord)

Sorry to tell, but I have the strong impression that the balance between the instruments is about 2/3 basso continuo and 1/3 flute, which is barely audible at some points... At least balance it 50%-50%, and maybe even less for the bass, I still feel it is a sonata for flute, not a concerto! The traverso has such a mellow and "velvet-ey" texture that it is easily overwhelmed by the enthusiastic viola di gamba...
@johannaklein8187Ай бұрын
I don’t agree with you, it makes this music so much more interesting as a dialogue. To me this is the best performance ever.
@orlandonandezАй бұрын
This is exactly the real balance of those instruments. In a palace room they must have been heard as they are heard here. The traverse is heard above the rest by its high frequency register. I have no problem listening to it clearly and as the main voice. On the other hand, the sound power of the baroque transverse is not comparable to the modern traverse flute. So everything is right here 😊
@RaherinАй бұрын
What kind of flute is that, anyone?

This is the Flauto traverso, which was used during the Baroque period.
