That's a very neat repair. Of course, if Bachmann fitted proper bearings in the first place, it wouldn't have been necessary!

Bill, the caps and chokes are the RF suppression. The wires to the tender are for the DCC socket/dummy plug. I added tender pickups to mine.

Yes, he's sneaked that one in without mentioning it! (To be fair, though, the PECO wheel cleaning tool I bought in the late 1970s incorporated a brass brush as one contact, and a 'scraper' as the other. But, credit where it's due, this is a neat idea!)

Hi Bill. Where would the hobby be without people like you. Great improvisation. I've never seen an 0-8-0 tender engine before. The nearest I've got is a GWR 2-8-0. Must put this loco on my wish list. Paul. 👍

Hi J. Thanks for the info. The problem with me is that I've spent so much of my model train research over the years on the GWR, I've overlooked the fact that unusually designed engines exist on the other companies that made up the Big 4. Lesson learned there! Paul. 👍

hi Bill your getting there regarding chassis construction. The repair you did with the tube axle combination is what chassis building from scratch is all about. You have actually improved this bachmann loco no end when compared to the origional bachmann product. Pity it was not your own loco as you could have replaced the other 3x axles as well which would have given impeccable running on level track. I wonder when you will take to building a proper chassis for any of your locos.

The longest ex- LNWR locos to survive on BR , I think the last ones were withdrawn about 1962, I have the same loco renumbered as 49449 , lovely smooth runner not had any trouble with it yet.

A very nice repair, indeed, OOBill. Funny, but a couple of days ago I did some weathering on a 40 foot boxcar which included a few seagull droppings. My fictional railraod is near Lake MIchigan, so it's not unreasonable. They look real to me, but I'm not sure I'll do it again. I prefer light weathering and no graffiti because I want my layout to look real, but also how I'd prefer reality to be (not how it is). Cheers from Wisconsin!

Very well done. These newer Bachmann models can be a bugger to work on. Those brake rods, especially, are iffy. They can sometimes be quite brittle, as well as very thin. I just broke the brake rigging on my Caledonian 812 whilst trying to work on it. And it's a pretty poor go that Bachmann couldn't be bothered to fit axles bearings, given the prices they charge for these things.
@astolatpere112 жыл бұрын
You turned it into a nice runner. We are unanimous on the weathering.

Those 'resistors' are inductors for RF suppression in addition to the capacitor. They aren't needed for operation.

Excellent repair. The amount of slop on the front axel was bad. Its looks like a casting error in the chassis block. Its a handy video as i’ll keep an eye on my own G2a incase it develops the same issue. What size brass tubing did you use for the axel?
@oobill2 жыл бұрын
3.5mm outer diameter and 3.0mm inner.

Hi Bill , a few questions for u as usual haha. What brand of the crank pin spanner/tools are you using as the smallest i can find on ebay is 3 mm and no smaller asni wqntmto buy a set of them as they will come in handy. Also whatn is the rqtio of molly grease to gear oil you have made up in the old nail polish bottle. Also is that 1 connecting rod on each side for all 8 wheels or 4 axles ? Thanks again for the gr8 videos there bill. Cheers m8 from John in Australia.
@oobill2 жыл бұрын
1- Hornby. 2 - It's not Moly Grease it's lithium white grease mixed 50/50 with Hob-E-Lube Gear Oil. 3 - 3 connected rods each side.

Great job . I have one of these and it’s a really smooth runner . Haven’t noticed any wobble but I must have a look . I wonder what caused the front axle to wear ? Is it that it doesn’t have any bearings?
@charlesemerson67632 жыл бұрын
Russell, no bearings in the chassis. Some of the early Bachmann locos actually had square cut holes in the chassis so the bearing surface was terrible.
@oobill2 жыл бұрын
Actually one of the rods had a very loose pin which I think caused uneven pull on the wheels. That might have caused the wear. I tightened the pin but it didn't make the edit of the video. My Mainline J72 has the same issue but being split axle adds to the problem.

Greetings, wouldn't the bushing raise the front wheels up by 1mm, thereby making the second and third wheel not touch the track? Without grinding a bit of height in the original wheel slot, the bushing would make it ride high, no?
@oobill2 жыл бұрын
The wall of the tube is 0.2mm. So technically yes it does lower the axle by that amount. Didn't seem to affect performance at all so the chassis is probably worn with a lot of play anyway.

Yes it is. Has 2.5mm and 2.0mm sockets. I have other hex spanners for anything larger. The thing I don't like about it is that it's really too short to hold and has no grip whatsoever. I also recommend putting a wee blob of black or blue tack into the sockets.
