Being out of the hobby for 35 yrs. The pancake motor was new to me. I recently purchased a couple of diesels that had these motors I was unfamiliar with. For days I was racking my brains out on how to release the motor from the carriage . Did research for days but couldn't find nothing. Today I finally discovered the proper name for this motor and it made my search much easier! You were my first pop up to this particular motor and ta da! you showed me right away how to release this motor. Touché now I can get on with getting two locos running like they should! Thank you for this video, my stress has disappeared.

I'm far from an expert, but just throwing this out there. Recently got my "train set" from my moms attic, looks like I'm getting into this as my 5 year old has taken an interest lol. Been in her attic for over 20 years, and was bought new by us. One of two loco's I had was an early F9 with this motor setup, although with the white gears you mention. I can say with confidence I'm the first to open it. The front truck is pickup only, and the rear is drive only (no contacts). Just throwing it out there; I have no doubt there was a flavor with pickups on both trucks, but I can say with confidence that ones without them on the rear/drive truck definitely existed.

I has the exact Loco although it had the all metal chassis with all wheel drive

Same here… so no contact wiper for the wheels. Rather, there are two metal ends of pancake motor which are insulated with plastic housing between the two ends. Good video.

I got one today and it runs but only at a high voltage that causes it to get a bit hot after a while

What a goofy video, if you knew what you were doing you could have just cleaned the original motor and it would have ran just fine. When the rotor is burned up the windings will not be bright copper colored. You just needed to clean up the black crude that was on the face of the commutator, it was just old oil and brush dust. If you would have cleaned all the parts in rubbing alcohol with a toothbrush and reassembled it, it would have run. It was obvious this was your first time working on this type of motor.
