Good Evening Sam, Yet another outstanding review of the Bachmann Midland 1F Tank Engine, the detail is brilliant, the running performance is great and so is her strength, the little engine that could. I too own one, the preserved one, No.1418 in British Railways Black with the Late BR Crest, numbered 41708. Great news, the people at Barrow Hill are going to start the restoration on the Midland 1F next year and have her back in steam before her 150th Birthday in 2028, now 9 years away, she'll be the oldest operational Midland Railway Steam Locomotive in Great Britain. I can see 4 locomotives that worked on the LMS in the sidings and the odd one out is the Robinson O4 2-8-0 which worked for the GWR, LNER and in Australia. Now back to the review, again an outstanding review, oh and very cheap too, I remember paying my Bachmann Midland 1F Tank Engine No.41708 for £69 at the Llangollen Railway in North Wales a few years ago I believe. 10/10 5 Stars 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟 😉

Hi Jordan, thanks again for your kind words Jordan - really glad you liked this one! Yours sounds very lovely too - and it's great to hear about one of these being restored - that really will be something! Very well spotted with those - and actually £69 is pretty good for a few years ago!! :O Thanks for watching - Sam :)

I enjoy watching your reviews even if I'm not interested in purchasing the model, though they've certainly helped me to make wise purchases! Very professionally presented and fully informative. I just want to correct your comments made about 'shiny' plastic coal effects. I've came across many similar ones from people not old enough to be familiar with real coal (I used to have a coal fire at home). It was semi-shiny, not matt! Bachmann have actually captured the effect quite well IMO, and it's part of their attention to detail. When painting coal on kits, etc., I always opt for a satin finish. Keep up the good work. I'm looking forward to more reviews from you.

A great unboxing, Sam. The Midland 1F was a very nice model, its detailing was astonishing, the quality was great and well as its enteresting design (it almost looks like a tank version of James). The only issue, is the fact of being fast in the control, but at least it isn't a serius problem, and everything else overshadows it. And in my opinion, it is definetely worth the value, its not perfect but it is a great loco, in many ways it is just incredible, its noticeable that Bachmann putted effort on it, and it has a lot of charm for being an open cab tank engine. Anyways, I hope you are having a nice day, and I'll see you soon.

nice model there mate, Odd one out was tough. I think you intended it to be the GWR 30xx (ex ROD GCR 8k (aka the LNER O4)) (phew) BUT the ROD did have a strong LMS connection. First up in 1919 the LNWR brought 30 and called them the MN class. These were passed to the LMS at the grouping and given the power rating 7F. In 1927 the LMS brought another 75. But not many of these saw much use. In many cases they were brought for the tenders which were placed behind Fowler 4f 0-6-0's and as to replace some pre-grouping tenders behind old LNWR loco whichwere a bit small for a then odern railway. About 20 of the 27 batch entered traffic with the LNWR batch and lasted until 1932. 30 others were sold to China (sans tender) and the rest scrapped Have a good week Jon

Another excellent, useful, and thorough review thank you Sam. It's a nice loco, but I am still deciding between the Bachmann Class 4MT 2-6-4 tank and the Oxford N7 that you were so impressed with. I have seen that most Bachmanns struggle on 1st radius curves (which I have due to space restraints) including the 4MT, so it might have to be the Oxford N7 when the BR black one comes out. Slow speed performance is crucial to me and so many other reviewers pay no attention to that. I can't thank you enough for your helpful reviews.
@SamsTrains
@SamsTrains 5 жыл бұрын
Hi Andrew, my pleasure, glad you enjoyed it! Ahh very tricky decision - hope you thoroughly enjoy whichever one you choose in the end! I'm not certain how the Bachmann 4MT will work on 1st radius, since I've never tried that, but I would say the Oxford gives the better slow speed performance! Thanks for watching - Sam :)
@andrewjditton
@andrewjditton 5 жыл бұрын
Sam'sTrains Cheers Sam! I value your opinion and appreciate the time you take to reply. Planning a tiny shunting micro-layout (slow speed is crucial), and having temporary 1st radius track on the table for running in and tail-chasing fun, I think it’ll have to be the N7. Keep up the good work matey! 👍

Interesting fact. The half cabs were able to be fitted with a full cab. Also it is a contract with Staveley Iron Works and the Midland Railway we to thank for some of the class making it to the 1960s. The class had only lasted as long as it had because the Midland Railway had signed a contract in 1866 to provide shunting engines to Staveley Ironworks for 100 years; the 1Fs, as they were by then, were the only locomotives suitable to perform this duty.

Seems to be much better than the Bachmann Jinty. Due to Midland standardisation the 1F mechanism may be able to be used in the Jinty since the wheelbase and wheel sizes should be identical. For current production of the Jinty, Bachmann should at least be using a chassis to this standard. This review from just a few years ago but the prices we can only dream of now.

The running might improve a little with time. I think yours might have been sitting in its box for a couple of years. If memory serves, I'm sure at some point last year Hattons acquired a not inconsiderable quantity of bankrupt stock. All brand-new-in-box, so to speak, but discontinued models no longer in production that had been stored for a while. I'm certain there was a small announcement somewhere, there was certainly a point where they suddenly had a lot of Bachmann stock in, but with running numbers that were additional to the locomotives and pre-orders they were already listing. I grabbed a early logo BR 1F off ebay last year (that Rails are still listing as in stock), and that was the full cab version. Very nice little engine, trying desperately resist the urge to look at the BRITISH RAILWAYS version as I type.

Hi Sam, yet another good video. I'm contemplating getting a Midland 1F for my own layout and your video tipped the scale to get one. Is the odd one out that black engine at 25:07? I recognise a GWR-style safety valve. But I don't know what kind of engine it is? Also if not then is it the NE Breakvan seen at 23:10? Good video none the less.
