I like this interpretation of the prelude better than Yo Yo Ma's. As good as Ma is, I think his version is a little too choppy, and his base notes overdone. Maisky's long-bowing, I think, fits the piece better, and his base notes are more even with the rest. Both cellists have amazing technique; but I give Maisky a lot of credit. I've read that some criticize him for too much vibrato, but I think it sweetens the suites.

I like the Bach suites more romanticized like Maisky plays them. Historically, Ma's interpretation is definitely more accurate to the time the suites were composed, but it's just too vanilla for me. I definitely took inspiration from Maisky when I played the 4th on marimba.

Prelude too much slow: you lose the two melodic lines that alternate along the movement.

Sorry, but IMHO this version, starting with the Prelude, is overdone. Starker's performance on Mercury has better tempos and impulse, though a very early recording of the 4th Suite by Starker (I believe it was on Period Records) was lighter and much faster- and I found validity to that interpretation as well, as it can be argued that this prelude is in fact a toccata. At least, that's my opinion for what it's worth (or not).
