So what happened in the end was after the puppet dimension, they came out of a portal instead of a bubble. So Discord teleported Bill back to the Nightmare Realm and disguised it. Bill may have won the battle, but he lost the war.

By far the best Death Battle they've made! It's so good how even though Bill won, Discord still ruined Bill's victory by trapping Bill back in the Nightmare Realm. And since Discord is basically the incarnate of chaos, he will always be able to return. Bill on the other hand...well, just don't make a deal with him and that's about it! Also, glad you brought attention to Discord sacrificing himself to trap Bill in the Nightmare Realm. While I love the fights in DB, I am a sucker for good characterization. And Bill and Discord were both portrayed extremely well here. There’s a reason why this is my all time favorite episode.

Ey glad to see the Death Battle reactions back. This is easily my new favorite DB episode ever, though I think the conclusion was pretty flawed. Like they say the Bell can’t drain Bill, even though it’s worked on people who resist getting their power stolen before, like Discord himself. And they also say Discord wouldn’t take the fight seriously, even though he only acts superior around people he knows he’s above, against other dangerous reality warpers like his ex girlfriend Cosmos, who’s actually very similar to Bill personality wise, he’s very serious about it.

Ive been waiting for this one, Jonah. And I love it to no end. Its so so good. This is a match up and episode that I am extremely passionate about. So I want to express that and point out not just how good this episode is in my own way, but WHY it's such a special episode of Death Battle. Very, VERY long comment incoming so get ready. So personally, this has been my most wanted Death Battle for a long long time. Ever since Season 5 of Death Battle back in 2015-16. When I was in high school and pretty much in my peak of obsession with discovering Death Battle, key word discovering. At the time, I was just getting into MLP, which was in Season 6 around that time. And I must say, MLP is one of my favorite cartoons of all time, its so so so special and dear to me and my adolescence. I highly recommend giving it a try at the very least, you could be pleasantly surprised by how good the show can be and is. Or at least listen to the songs, they bang. Gravity Falls is a show doesn't mean as much to me but is still a once in a blue moon kind of quality show that I'd still say is one of the best cartoons of all time and a lot of people my age grew up with it when it was coming out. And Bill was and still is one of the greatest cartoon villains of all time. So what better than to put him against Discord, someone who basically preluded him? And the possibilities for this battle were endless. Literally endless. Like they've had reality warpers before on DB like Doctor Strange and Doctor Fatr or Scarlet Witch and Zatanna but, they never fully took advantage of how wacky and out of the box they could get with it. But this match up was perfect for them to go all out. Only one problem. MLP has been notorious for having an awful track record on Death Battle with a lot of biases against it inside the team. To start of allllll the way back in Season 1, Starscream from Transformers vs Rainbow Dash. With Season 1 of DB, its universally agreed that you have to judge it on a much different scale compared to the rest of the series because 1: it was made in a much different time (2011-12). 2: it was just Ben (the voice of Wiz) animating the fights. And 3: the team were different people back then and much less experienced. But its pretty agreed that even with these facts to be more lenent with Season 1, Starscream vs Rainbow Dash is awful. Which sucks, the match up does have some cool stuff going for it. But they basically highly insult Starscream as a character, RD is pretty obnoxious and annoying in the fight, not only do they make fun of the brony fanbase (which tbf is kinda understandable for the year it was made and because the starting age of the brony fandom was roooough) but they make fun of MLP itself like it's nothing but an "ew ponies" show. And worst of all, Ben himself even said that if they hadn't concluded that Rainbow Dash didn't win, the episode wouldn't have even been made because he didn't want to potentially scar any of MLP's demographic, which at the time was mostly a younger female audience, at the time. While the last part is kinda understandable, it still doesn't entirely hold up considering characters like Mario, Sonic, Yoshi, and other characters are in the exact same season. So the episode is rigged from the start AND its just overall poorly made and dated. The second MLP episode, Deadpool vs Pinkie Pie, had a lot of stuff rigged against it too. For one, it's the finale of Season 3 (2013-14), already regarded as one of the roughest and worst seasons at the time and to this day, and it wasn't even meant to be the finale. But a lot of complications happened and it ended up being pushed into being a finale when it wasn't a finale worthy match up. The episode is overall better than Starscream vs RD, but it's still not that great. This was the start of Deadpool getting pretty obnoxious in his fourth wall break cameos and Pinkie is portraited a lot more annoyingly than she actually is in show. Shes portraited as annoying and loud when its more accurate to call her hyper and passionate, a fine line that takes a lot to get right but they didn't really do it too well. That, and they still keep on with the "ugh ponies" thing which was still kinda regular to see at that time but MLP was starting to be seen as a show that is legitimately good around that time. So those jokes were starting to get pretty tasteless and in bad heart. Theres a difference between poking fun at a fanbase and the fanbase laughing with you because they can't deny that it's true and funny and poking fun at a fanbase and no one laughing, you know? But as for the fight, its just underwhelming. It's got fun ideas but it's overall pretty uneventful and was a really anticlimactic end to and already rough season. In Season 5 (2015-16), Raven vs Twilight Sparkle came out, and it is... Fiiine? Idk, its just a pretty forgetful episode with an okay if pretty flawed fight. They are still keeping with the "ugh ponies" joke and fanbase demoralizing and its just old and tired by that point. That and they really low balled Twilight and not in a way that made the fight more fair, it put her more disadvantageous against Raven. And that was it for the longest time. The team somewhere at some point afterwards said "no more ponies/MLP". Which... Sucked, tbh. MLP, by that point it had to have been around Season 6 or 7, had grown into a show enjoyed not just by girls but boys too, both of young and mature ages. And yes, its target demographic is young girls, but it grew into a show not too dissimilar to other cartoons like Adventure Time or even Gravity Falls. Why is it weird for a boy to like a show with quality like that? No one batter an eye whenever we watched Powerpuff Girls, did they? MLP was in much the same boat by then. It had overarching plots and storylines, character development, genuinely dark moments and scenarios, banger songs, it had grown into so much more than what it was painted to be by the internet back in 2011-12 but people seemed to just not be able to realize it. And Death Battle team didn't. The MLP episodes weren't not received well because it had MLP in them, they weren't received well because they didn't give MLP a fair chance due to preluding biases. It was the only show for pretty much as far as I can remember that they intentionally didn't treat fairly, SHOW being the key word, not character. And they would go on to unfairly treat characters like Super Friends Aquaman in the same way in the far future, but the difference is that they learned to do it comedically and in good heart and was the whole point of the joke. With MLP, it felt like it was always given the cold shoulder by DB Team. And do know, DB, Ben, Chad and the Team have changed a lot over the years. The show has never been completely perfect, its not just been relating to MLP where the show has gotten rocky. They are absolutely not the same people they were back then and if the last two seasons have been any indication, they've absolutely learned a whole lot when it comes to their show and what to do for the better with it. So I don't hold any of the biased judgements they've had for a show, something that you really shouldn't do in your VS show, against them or am using it to paint them as awful people because thats petty. It just sucks how it all unfolded over the years. [Continued in replies]

So hopes of Bill Cypher vs Discord, a very very popular match up that not just I but many people wanted, were, for the foreseeable future, squashed. A really fitting and thematic match up seemed like it would just never happen due to Death Battle going along with the popular thing to do with MLP on the internet. It seemed like it would sadly never happen. One of the greatest villains in cartoon history would never fight one of the best characters in MLP who had the perfect powerset and personality to bounce off him. But then, 2022. Season 9 has ended, arguably one of their best season yet in the New Golden Age of DB we're currently in. And they post a ballot for offical channel members. Two polls with 6 match ups each for a 2D and 3D match up to happen garanteed in Season 10, and people could vote. Cole MacGrath vs Alex Mercer won the 3D poll, a lot time and overdue legacy match up. But in the 2D poll... There it was. It truly shocked me, personally. Bill Cypher vs Discord. There it was amongst 5 other really tight match ups. After arguably one of the worst treatments any piece of media has ever gotten on DB and saying there would be no more MLP episodes, there was THE MLP episode. And it fuckin won. My most wanted match up for 7 to 8 years was officially guaranteed and going to happen. So, here we are now. Did Death Battle deliver? Yes. Yes they did, they delivered so fucking hard and created an actual masterpiece of an episode. This episode is, without a doubt, one of their greatest episodes of all time and maybe the best episode they've ever made. Let me explain. For one, the editing. Holy shit, the editing in the analysis for this episode is out of this world. It's some of the best in the show's history, hands down. Especially on Bill's side considering how little he actually appears in the show, they manage to do so much with him. And on Discord's side, its one of my favorite analysis in the whole show. They rectify their past greviances with how they treated MLP with just one little bit and it truly feels like they treated the show and Discord with respect. But we'll get to more on that in the fight. And lastly, the cameos of Bill and Discord in their respective analysis'. This was inevitable to happen as they do work with the fourth wall. I was personally really worried if it'd even be entertaining or funny though, as Deadpool had become a lonf running fourth wall breaking character in the show and he had gotten stale by his last official match up appearance in Deadpool vs The Mask. But then they made two of the best cutaways in the whole show. And I also must say, the voices they got for Bill and Diacord are so top notch. Like seriously, they are almost 1 for 1. The tone, the pitch, the inflextions of both, its insane how well their respective VAs captured the original voices. But as you'll notice in the analysis, there'll sometimes be these glitchy lines of randomly spawning letters. Well, not only does this fit the aesthetic of the episode, but these glitchy lines of letters are actually scrabbled up names of popular names in the Death Battle community. Names of YTers who give fair criticism and reviews of the show and general fans. And throuh the analysis, you can see bits and pieces of running gags between some of these YTers, such as the gag of Tai Lung heing "the greatest character ever" with his one appearance in Bill's analysis. And there are so many other appearances of other DB YTers in the fight too. There's avatars of Redrunner, Biff Weed, and even ponysonas of fans of the show when Bill and Discord are flying around in the fight. Even custom pony forms of Mable and Dipper in the background, and so much more. Not only is it already a stand out episode, but its practically a love letter to the DB community in general which is like... Genuinely so sweet. Especially when, if we're being honest, the Death Battle fanbase generally doesn't really deserve that kindness and recognition from DB Team (excluding the YTers referenced and mentioned and so on). In this episode, more than any other, you can tell that DB Team cares about their fans and about the quality of their show. [Continued-]

But the fight... The fight is truly something else. To start off, like I mentioned before, DB doesn't have the best track records with the use of reality warpers. Because, more often than not, they tend to underutilize their abilities. It never quite feels like they do enough to convince us that these characters control their universes at their peak. But this battle? This battle does. You get just enough goofiness from Discord and Bill from their powers. But you also get just enough action and actual fighting to where you don't really wish that they did more. This is especially apparent in the reality bubbles. We've had animation switch ups before, but never has it felt more appropriate in the bubbles specifically, and they all look beautiful. The fight in general looks friggin amazing, its hands down their best looking sprite fight to date. Look at the hand drawn stuff in general for the fight, Discord's part where he eats Bill as a Dorito looks so 1 for 1 like MLP's animation that I just thought they took a bit from the show itself but nope, its original. And the transitions from sprite Bill and handdrawn Bill are fuckin... I mean just look at it, man. Do I have to explain? Adding onto the fact that it really feels like they are bending Death Battle to their will, this battle also references a lot of popular match ups that people want to see officially made and you can see references to them in the fight. You can see Sans from Undertale and The Judge from 'Off' in the background when Bill has the Weird Day drums out. You can see the pony forms of Rick Sanchez and Doctor Who (both of which are like, actual genuinely official background ponies in My Little Pony. No joke. MLP has a lot of pop culture references in it's background characters) fighting in the background when Bill and Discord are flying around. You can see Bendy and Cuphead in the rubberhose animation. And you can see a Fall Guy in the background of the puppet show, and Bill happens to turn into an Amogus imposter in the claymation, a reference to Among Us vs Fall Guys. It's highly thought amongst the community that these are pretty much soft confirms that these match ups could be guaranteed to happen Season 11. But enough about background and more about the fight. Or specifically, the story of it. This is hands down one of the best stories they've told for a fight in DB, if not the best. The ending is what truly is the cherry on top for this masterpiece of an episode. So, at the start of the fight, Bill has taken over Equestria. It opens that he's basically won, the Mane 6 are in banners (a direct Gravity Falls reference) and Celestia and Luna are in stone on his throne (another direct Gravity Falla reference). Discord seems disgruntled over what Bill's done. But, with his jovial self, he starts to write a letter to Celestia (in a very mocking tone to how Twilight used to do the exact same in the early seasons of MLP which is very in character for him) and tells her that he's going to teach Bill an important lesson about friendship. The battle commences, and we'll skip to the part where Bill and Discord exit the reality bubbles after the puppet bit and they're back at Canterlot. One thing I want to point out is how the background of Canterlot now seems off color and that all the background reality bubbles are now gone, that and that they didn't enter Canterlot back from hopping out of a reality bubble but rather a portal. Discord then enters Bill's mind and taunts him saying that he's seen Bill's show (which is reasonable to say considering he has knowledge of our own world) and that he knows how Bill dies. Bill becomes enraged enough to focus completely on Discord. He captures him. And at this point, Discord's plan has worked. He tried one last hail Mary to maybe beat Bill but alas. But the bright side? He put Bill back to his old home. Bill realizes what Discord did at that very moment. Bill realizes that they're not in Equestria anymore, and sees the portal to it closing. He rushes to it to try and escape again, but its too late. Knowing he saved Equestria, Discord laugh in Bill's face knowing not just that he still won in his own way, but that he saved Equestria and his best friend, the one he cares about the most, Fluttershy. And Bill screams in frustration, being trapped back into the Nightmare Realm once more for who knows how long. This ending and storyline is so genuinely genius. The whole time, since the start of the fight, it's made to seem like Discord knew he didn't have a garanteed chance at winning. Its why he writes the note to Celestia and you can see it on the ground at the end kn front of Fluttershy. He wanted them, or specifically Fluttershy, to know that jts okay, he saved them. Just in case he doesn't win. It was a goodbye letter. That pat he gives Fluttershy's banner is a goodbye pat. Discord outsmarted Bill. The portal they come out of when they reenter Canterlot and the lack of reality bubbles after the puppet bit? That is specifically one of Discord's very portals. He teleported them back into the Nightmare Realm and formed a fake reality around it so that Bill wouldn't notice. And now? He has to piss Bill off as much as possible so that Bill tunnel visions on him, which they did point out was a genuine weakness of Bill. His tendency to tunnel vision on his goals. Discord enters Bill's head to mess with him even more. And here's when it gets deep. Discord says "We may be evenly matched, Bill. But I've seen your show, my two dimensional neusance. And I know how you die." Now this can mean one of two things and also acts as a subversion of expectations. Either Discord knows he's about to lose and is taunting a moral victory of "yeah, Im about to lose, but I still know your fate in the end and I will relish in it." Or the more likely option. Discord is to use the same tactic that did kill Bill in the end. Now, they make you think that he's going to erase his or Bill's memory like how they did in GF. I mean, he's in his head and Discord DOES have the tools to recreate that, like they said. On top of the fact that Discord is actively causing damage to Bill and Bill is freaking out in the exact same way he did just before he was beat in GF's finale. However, I and many others don't believe Discord was referring to the method of which Bill was beaten. What Discord was actually referring to was the fact that Bill was dupped into that method from the misunderstanding of how far people will go to save the people they care about. The willingness to sacrifice yourself for the people you care about. Discord might have all the powers Bill has, but out of everything they share, he has one thing over him. Friendship. Fluttershy changed him, he has a genuine friend who he grew to genuinely care about, and by proxy, care about the friends around her as well. Despite his carefree attitude, he genuinely and wholeheartedly cares about Fluttershy and would do anything for her, and he tries his best to help the others in his own weird ways. He had the willingness to sacrifice himself, and that was Bill's ultimate downfall in the fight. Discord used the exact same tactic against him. Using himself as a pawn so his loved ones can be free and safe. This is something Bill can not and will never understand. So when Discord makes Bill fully tunnel vision on him to reveal that he's trapped again, and sees that his plan worked and that Fluttershy (and Equestria) is safe, he can't help but laugh in the face of his death. A final "fuck you, I win" to Bill. He may have lost the fight, but he won the war. Discord did, indeed, teach Bill a very important lesson about friendship. This... is genuinely the greatest writing, characterization and storytelling Death Battle has ever done for a fight. Discord is the only character in Death Battle history who lost the fight and yet screwed over the winner's victory and might have actually win more in his loss. Both won and lost at the exact same time. Which is fitting, this is basically a hero vs villain fight. And Bill is genuinely evil. Had they come to the conclusion that Bill wins, I and many others are very happy that it wasn't a full on victory. Not only that, but what other match up to give an ambiguous ending like this than this one. [Continued-]

And as for the post analysis, a lot of people, myself included, were actually pining on Discord winning. And while I don't entirely agree, though I can't deny that Bill absolutely can win because this fight is just so goddamn close, I can thoroughly understand why they came to the conclusion they came to for Bill winning. And I'm happy that it more or less came down to how they personally assess and deal with situations, I and many others much perfer when matches come down to the litter things that differentiate the characters like thay instead of all the stat dumping lol. And while I do wish one of my favorite characters from one of my favorite cartoons won... Come on. He arguably got more respect in his loss, I literally have nothing to complain about. And really, that's the biggest thing about this episode. I... I literally have 0 to complain about it. People were saying that this was peak Death Battle. And it's not a meme. This episode... Is peak. Theres so many more details about this episode that I didn't even talk about like the cypher wheel or other overaching things or little details in the episode. It's a love letter to the community, they go so hard on the editing and voice acting, the writing of the fight is some of the series best, the characterization is some of the series best, the episode single handledly gave MLP the best redemption episode in the series, the post analysis is convincing, and so so so much more. This is literally some of the closest they have ever gotten to perfection and I honestly don't know how they'll ever top a peak like this again (though they have done it before). This episode is Art. Not just art, it is ART, with a capital 'A'. And I'm so, so, so happy that my most wanted episode of all time ended up so good. Seriously, take some time to look up reviews from Death Battle YTers of this episode, Jonah. They'll point out even more just how perfect this episode is. For me, this episode is a 10/10. No, its more than a 10/10. If there was any episode to break the boundaries of the /10 rating, its this match up and episode. And actual 11/10 episode and my new favorite Death Battle of all time. I hope this comment wasn't too much of a drag to read lol. Like I said, this march up means so much to me and to have my most wanted episode of all time turn out so good... It was such a good feeling. I hope I was able to express why this episode is so special. Oh and if you want to look up the track dude, it's called Discordant Decipher. They greatly downplayed Discord in this. Discord has a lot of abilities Bill does not possess as well a virtually no limitations to what he can do while Bill does have some restrictions, he simply can't do and either requires certain situations or help to perform these tasks. Discord is a lot stronger than this Death Battle suggests. He will even return from Death as he is a force of nature in Equestria, he is what creates and regulates chaos in Equestria and thus can't die because as long as Chaos exists so will Discord. Whereas Bill can't come back without the Axolotol, and even still what would come back would not be Bill anymore.
