Very beautiful Horse - definitely something with his hindlegs. If he was with the Amish there could be something that they were concerned about him as well (or knew something) and that’s why he even went to auction. He is such a pretty horse - and in front of a cart for sure stunning! Wishing all the best for this horse, you really never know at auctions… There were so many pretty horses!

@@karenedge4767 Well, he was apparently used by the Amish at one point, and many horses that come from Amish have injured or badly kept rear ends, some even so far that it's not fixable. Plus, with the factor of Friesians not having great rears to being with, I wouldn't be surprised if there was something going on that you couldn't diagnose based off eye.

I think you made the right decision. The Friesian reminds me of my mare with the hind. She has epm and it’s a nightmare. I love her to death, but it went from looking a little off in the hind to falling on me, seizures, hallucinations, irrational behavior, vision problems, ataxia, etc… it’s a long story but spent all my money in vet bills and she’s still not completely sound. She’s comfortable but I probably don’t have that long left with her. I wouldn’t wish that on my worst enemy. She is my heart horse and this is the hardest thing I’ve ever done.

@conniewojahn64452 жыл бұрын
Good decision. I'm not the best judge of movement, but even I noticed his hindquarters not moving right even before you mentioned it. My immediate impression was internal damage either bone, joint, or muscle, and I'm guessing it's from overuse or improper use. He's weak back there. Rehab might help, but I think it's permanent and will only progress worse, especially if it's hip and/or arthritis. He hurts and that makes him not want to move.
@freespiritequestrian2 жыл бұрын
Yes it’s so tough! I think it was a deeper issue, I’m not sure what exactly because it could be so many things. He was a wonderful horse and I wish I was in a position to rehab him.
@LiMaking2 жыл бұрын
I'm thinking improper use aswell. Could be that since he was so quiet, the people just made him do anything they wanted without actually training him to have good balance or enough muscle. I also think that saddle wasn't right for him bc he was kinda deep.
@laurafleming93262 жыл бұрын
I think you did the right thing with not buying him without a vet checking that hind end. I know that there can be a few things that could be an issue with it. Being that he was a breeding stud the bumps on the hind legs suggests that he could have been kicked during breeding. This happens and can easily end with seriously damaged legs. You made the right call.

Hi again SHAE GOOD DECISION! Noticed right away a problem with his left hind into the leg. Enough to where my guess is he was on pain meds. Might have something to do with the fact he was almost too quiet not showing any kind of real movement or reactions like he was numb hence meds. Yes pretty but enough of a distraction huh?! Lol. Your questions and gut feelings too were directing to not get him as you had several other reasons to not. So all in all I'm quite sure you did the right thing. Enjoy all who you have now and you'll know when the time is right. Always carefully look at hind quarters legs hooves and shoulders and most always that gut feeling will tell the truth... Thx for sharing. Catcha next time.

💯Shae, the "lagging and dragging" of the Friesian X's hind end was a little troubling. Wonder why he's a auction. He pulled a cart for the Amish and I'm wondering if he didn't get a bit "lame" from pulling too heavy a load. Sometimes, they put only one horse to pull an entire wagon of people. Do they provide X-rays and doctor certifications about lameness at auctions? So many auctions say, "as is," and being a non-expert, I would ask questions. Maybe just being gelded affected his hindquarter? Friesians don't lag and drag their legs like that; maybe his cart-pulling days permanently made that kind of conformation. Gorgeous Friesian, I would want an X-ray.
@freespiritequestrian2 жыл бұрын
Yes it was definitely off putting. They definitely don’t provide X-rays or anything at auctions, it’s always sold as is. I asked a lot of questions but I also learned at auctions you can only rely on what your eyes (and gut) are telling you right there.

Good choice on passing Friesian cross. I've imported numerois pure Friesians in the mid 2000s and had 30 here at my place at one time. The horse has a very weak back end and he would end up wearing you out to keep him moving forward. The Dutch judges for Friesian breeding standard for approved breeding stallions really focus on a powerful back end with lots of forward movement. If not they will not be able to become breeding stallions.

You must mean Horse Plus Humane Society. They save them regardless of their condition, if going for slaughter price. The last auction they went to, 1 horse literally died right at the auction. A second one was in such bad shape it fell down in the trailer on the way home to their rescue and they had to humanely euthanize it the minute the trailer stopped and it could only roll out. It could no longer stand. Only monsters would bring an animal to an auction in such bad condition

You made the right decision IMO. After you pointed out his backend I couldn't stop noticing how things just didn't look right with him. A friend's dad was incredibly successful in his business career and the one piece of advice he told us was, that if you aren't comfortable with a deal do not go through it. Very simple advice, but it really comes down to making an informed decision. It's this mental battle between your desire and intelligence. Personally, I follow this with nearly everything. It's never failed in that I never got stuck in a bad situation or lost significant amount of money. Your intuition was telling you something. Stick with your gut. There are plenty of horses in the... field to choose form. 🐎🥕
