I call bullshit with Toyota's claim from a 5th to 1st downshift, I've never had any manual equipped car or truck that would shift into 1st gear at any speed over about 5mph, the synchronizers in the transmission wouldn't handle that in the first place....clutch pedal staying on the floor means a loss of hydraulic pressure. A 5th to 3rd downshift would be somewhat common in hill country.
@jayrichards3672
@jayrichards3672 3 ай бұрын
I think similar. Toyota threw Howard under the bus just to salvage their perceived reputation. Don't get me wrong I'm a huge toyota fan because they hold resale value. Some times glitches occur Steve on the 2nd hill hold example when it failed! I think Toyota would be better off admitting early production glitches and how they handle issues. I'm still trying to wrap my head around debris/casting not being removed/flushed before continuing with production on the 100K recalled Tundras. How do ya miss that? Come on Toyota you have a reputation to protect! IMHO not gonna get there by sullying TRUCK KING!

I have the same truck you can shift into first gear at any speed especially if you jam it in the way he did. When decelerating I often shift into first gear around 12 mph and that's just right to slow you down pretty good for the car in front of you. There really is no reason to speculate if you watch the original video the tach shot all the way to Red line trying to keep up it was an obvious five to one down shift.

If you very briefly go into neutral, clutch out, and give a little gas and then clutch in and into 1st, does that work? Sounds like the gear sync isn't too happy. I learnt to drive on a '77 Land Rover that had no synhcro on 1st so this was the only way to get it to change.

@volvo09

@@busslayer4790 yeah if you need to quickly pass someone downshifting 2 gears is the way to go. If you only downshift one gear you better have a lot of torque, or the space to then downshift again. I think the old rule that says to hold off on buying a first year model is something to live by now more than ever before especially as cars become more and more advanced. After my '14 F150 died I moved into a lightly used '21 Ranger. In 8 years of heavy trail use the F150 never had any issues on a trail. Snow, ice, mud; it just worked. I took the ranger on a camping trip with mild dry trails and as i got back on the pavement I had the dash light up with ABS, traction control, driver assistance features go offline. I pulled over and restarted it. Turns out the forward sensors were dirty. No issues since but it definitely didn't inspire confidence lol

@volvo09
@volvo09 3 ай бұрын
By the nature of a manual transmissions operation you kind of get "locked out" of a 5th to 1st downshift because the 1st gear synchronizer is trying to spin the transmission input shaft (and clutch disk) up to speeds in excess of 15,000 rpm, so you really have to force it, and the clutch disk can explode due to the speed. And any experienced manual driver would quickly realize something isn't right. I tried to blow up the clutch on a beater car before by doing that but it never did blow up.... If I released the clutch then the engine would have exploded.

Some might have a 1st and reverse lockout at higher speeds, but most don't....I've owned several manual vehicles over the years, and none of them would even go into 1st above about 5mph when downshifting...the synchronizers won't allow that....sounds like Toyota is covering something up in their BS explanation of what happened...the clutch pedal stayed on the floor means it lost hydraulic pressure, so a master or slave cylinder failure by the sounds of it. I bet if they shut the truck off, put it in gear and started the truck it would have moved, I doubt the clutch itself failed....if it did it would have been a much more aggressive noise than a clunk.

It does Right by the parking brake they have a brake hold button that will hold the brakes indefinitely once you come to a stop fully, you can let your foot off the brake and it'll sit there, uphill or down, until you give it gas to move it.

I just got back from the dealer in central Texas, they said finding a 2024 with manual transmission is pretty much impossible. I wonder if that's because of the issues they've seen with the manual trans, and not some conscious decision to not offer it in favor of the 8 speed auto.

Sourcing parts and vehicle builds in Mexico is alot of the problem. MY 2001 Tacoma built in California and I believe Engine and driveline in Japan. Still has original front chassis ball joints and Tie rods with 315K on them and I check for wear every 30k, I did not have the alignment even checked until it had 275K on it, Strong work horse of a truck.

I watched the original video at .25 speed. Howard never did 5th to 1st. If you watch the RPM it never went to redline. If it was 5th to 1st at the speed he was going. It would have hit Redline. Toyota lied 🤥

my Volks has hill hold. For that car it depended on how hard you press the brake pedal, wether it would activate or not. Maybe this Tacoma is the same and the system isnt inconsistent.

Even with less hp with the manual 270/310 is still a ton of power for a small truck. I remember when I was in high school and had a Dakota with a 3.9 V6 175hp and thought it was a beast 😂

270/310 is much better than the previous generation Tacoma's but the problem is that the auto transmission competition is at 315/400 (Ranger 2.7), 310/430 (GM Twins) and 326/465 (Tacoma Hybrid). Plus, in Canada, the manual is not available with dual climate control, leather seats or the large infotainment screen. I am a die hard manual transmission enthusiast but Toyota is making it really hard to choose a manual in 2024.

On the original video, although you said the driveline never made it into gear (clutch out and trans connected to engine) did the gear actually engage in the transmission? Sounds like the auto-blipper and clutch never actually did their dance.

Well I drove older manuals and it was very hard to shift from 4th or 5th to 1st without some serious effort , as all that happens is it grinds , suppose with effort you could make it go maybe , so for a manual in 2024 to allow that 5th to 1st shift is a flaw on Toyotas part ,

Toyota executive - "Our naturally aspirated engines have proven themselves to be absolute workhorses with unrivaled reliability. Lets replace them across the board with smaller displacement turbo engines that have horrible reliability, WORSE gas mileage, especially under load and cost way more money, not only to build but also to maintain. That ought to ruin our legacy, let's go with that terrible strategy!" Ugh. The good news is that I've always wanted to own a Toyota truck but the interest rates always priced them just out of range for my budget. But now, I dont want one anymore! So yay me! 🥳🎉

So let's say it was a money shift that broke the truck. What was the failure and what would be the cost to repair if the dealer says it's on you? Is it just a grenaded friction disk? New clutch and flywheel? A couple grand and a bruised ego? Or was the damage more extensive? Did you sign a NDA or something?

Well I have the same truck with the upgraded a lot of things Manual and no problem so far, 2000 miles almost one thing I noticed is the power on Ecco very sluggish, but you save a lot of gas but once you changed to the normal you can feel the difference, and I downgraded no problem I used to have a Nissan Altima 2005 ( great car), still running and it looks brand new🥹, and I used to do the same downgraded speeds no problems ever the only thing was the Camshaft I have to changed 4 times in almost 20 years

That's BS on Toyotas part for the clutch. Then why a stop sale on manual transmissions right after this video. Far too much of the design and engineering of this truck was compromised for the hybrid set-up. Everything from cheaper labor rates to significant price increases. Even the fuel tank is down in size to accommodate the hybrid system. The straw that breaks the camel's back for me is the cheap flip up seats. I would expect that from a 1985 Jeep not a 2024 Tacoma. And rumer is their dropping the manual transmissions next year. Just a hard pass. Too bad. I like the style and the change in suspension system along with the torquer power plant.

I'm a big Toyota fan, I had a 2nd Gen and now 3rd Gen tacoma, loved them both, zero issues with either once except regular maintenance. I was interested when they came out with a 4cyl Turbo but I'd never buy the 1st years of a new gen truck, especially with that drastic of a change. And with a lot of issues with the 2024's that reigns true. The 4.0 and 3.5L regular v6 are bullet proof. No one has ever been able to tell me WHY we can't get the 2.8l Turbo diesel they have in the HiLux.... it's been around for a while, decent power and torque, plus good on fuel. Is it an emissions thing or? Love the channel ! I personally think the clutch on that other tacoma probably had an issue, I doubt your ol' man did 5th-1st shift, AND a 5th to 3rd is a totally normal shift for a Manual, so not sure what they are talking about.
