I bought a new 2004 Tacoma TRD Offroad in Sept 2004 for $31,000. I loved it and drove it for 15 years and 260,000 miles. I bought a new 2019 Tacoma TRD Offroad in August 2019 for $32k. It was like a spaceship compared to my 2004. This 2024, new generation Tacoma TRD Offfroad would cost me $52k. So, in 15 years, the price increased $1000 or maybe $2000. From 2019 to 2024 (5 years) the price increased $20,000. I know inflation is bad, but a 62.5% increase in 5 years is outrageous. I thought I'd drive Tacomas for the rest of my life, but now, I can't imagine buying another one.

Well, it is just sad that it broke under conditions that did not seem unusually harsh for off road use. And of course, the Chevy that was on the same trail was unfazed by those conditions. Every one has been expressing concern about the longevity- or lack thereof- of the turbo 4 banger. But that is not what broke! It was the front dif actuator. So the question I still have is: Is this part changed from the previous years of Tacomas and 4Runners(if the same part in both)? Has that part been weakened? Or, is the higher torque rating too much for it? Because I have never witnessed one of those breaking, even when Truck King was thrashing a 4Runner while breaking thru ice to get to the mud. If the part has not been weakened to save a few ounces, or if it is the same part and is able to handle the increased torque, then it is possible that this breakage was just a fluke, a bad part 1 in a thousand. But how can we know? If the part was weakened or it is the same old part but not up to the increased torque, then will Toyota immediately beef up the part? If so, how can we know? Because except for that breakage and the lack of rear leg room, the truck seems quite nice. Though I realize the engine change is not popular, the MPG was impressive and towing seemed pretty good, and comfort much improved. I wonder if anyone else has broken a front dif part? Particularly if adding larger tires?
@Cloud300006 ай бұрын
That depends; - If you are researching to buy the Tacoma, Toyota will tell you it is one-in-a-million and that they beefed up the part and QA so every truck will now be better than all of their competitors. - If you own the truck (without running a multi-million subscriber KZbin channel) and are concerned, Toyota will tell you the part meets all specs as is and your off-road use has voided the warrantee and caused it to break, which you need to pay out of pocket. Oh, and it weakened the rest of the truck too, so no more warrantee. You can of course fight it in court, assuming you have 3 years and half a million to cover your legal fees to do so.

The real question is that how much is getting a aftermarket upgrade to the diff going to cost compared to taking it to the dealer. If you are off roading at least in my opinion you shouldn't expect factory off road parts to last very long.
@alexandersheppard19976 ай бұрын
@Hybris51129 But you would think factory powertrain components that are included in an "off road" trim should be able to handle anything in actual off roading situations short of blatant abuse. TFL wasn't even pushing the truck that hard when the front diff blew up.
@Hybris511296 ай бұрын
@@alexandersheppard1997 You would think but bare in mind of say a 1000 Ford Raptors for example how many will actually see off road use at all? If you are willing to play the numbers that gives the bean counters room to start making cuts because how many people will never know the difference? In this case maybe Toyota lost on the TFL truck but for all the tens of thousands they will sell what is 1, 10, 50, or 100 trucks that end up with a broken diff.

Hello Andre and Roman. Thanks for all your great reviews. I'm sorry, but I would like to remind just a few of you who might have some small challenges to see that some really good vehicles are made to cover other needs than your own, which is also called respect for other people and their needs. (It's not the Tacoma). I understand why you are testing the vehicles ability to reduce the speed in downhill slopes without active down- shifting or use of cruise- control and the importense of this for unexperienced drivers. You have often also told the importense of using a lower gear, and I'm completely agree in that. I don't know the requirements in the US, but to get a driver license for heavier trailer or lorry in Norway, we must show that we actively will choose lower gears or for a lighter vehicle we might sometimes use cruisecontrol, but if it's not downshifting we shall activate a lower gear manually. I understand that the US are a big country with climate differences like we have in Europe. In Norway it's required to use winthertires in the wither, and if you are stopped without propper withertires you will get a hefty fine and cannot drive on before you have mounted wintertires, and in an accident you will lose the right for compensation. And a lot heavy vehicles from sothern Europe must either turn home again or mount wintertires on the border. Back in time we were allowed to use offroadtires, but the passability in difficult conditions with my Land Rover Defender was so much worse that I started to use proper wintertires in winter conditions. One thing is the much better safety even on clean and salted roads, but on bad and hilly trails in the wintertime it's just fun to drive in 10 inches of weat snow with good wintertires on the LC. Thanks for your great reviews. Best Regards from Arne in Norway
