The muscles in our limbs are bundled into compartments and these muscle compartments are surrounded by a fibrous connective tissue called the fascia. The fascia is pretty tough tissue and does not have a lot of elasticity, so if the muscle compartment swells up the fascia will not stretch and so the pressure builds up in the muscle compartment and this further restricts circulation, in turn that makes the swelling even worse so it is like a negative cycle. This is called compartment syndrome and this is a medical emergency it can not only result in breakdown and loss of skeletal muscle but it can lead to pretty serious complication like renal failure, multiple organ failure and death. The treatment for compartment syndrome is to perform a fasciotomy, this involves a surgical incision through the fascia to open up the muscle compartment and relieve the pressure. This is complicated because you then end up with an open wound that has to be managed pretty carefully. Your mate Dave is very lucky, he could have been completely fucked. Compartment syndrome is often caused by crush injury, such as earthquake victims with limbs pinned under rubble for extended time, or people trapped with compression to a limb, or people that have tourniquets or constrictive bandages in place for too long.

Bomb underwear is only stopping small low velocity fragments, a thing that came up upon experience in Afghan, where sand greatly hindered wound healing and added complications to the patient. You need the full pelvic protector (nicknamed diaper lol) to increase your chance of surviving walking on a mine, and for probability to save your private parts. Willy, if you want please encourage people to use soft armor, it's statistically more important in this war than wearing sapi plates. Having a heavy lvl 4 sapi plate only with no soft armor is barely enough. Walking in heat is terrible with soft armor, no ventilation, but in Ukraine right now it's warming you and weighs 2-3kg to cover your torso, neck, etc. It gets really resource intensive for the whole supporting chain of medics/doctors/hospitals if you have penetrating wounds into the torso, groin, head and neck. All drone dropped fragments from VOG's and handgrenades are stopped by STANAG 2920 standard soft armor. "Statistics shared by Ukrainian physicians demonstrate that more than 70% of all Ukrainian combat casualties are due to artillery and rocket barrages from Russian forces, which has resulted in significant polytrauma to multiple organ systems." There is no ability to bring in helicopter evacuation and emergency triage the wounded to Kyiv, yet alone Berlin or America where the expertise of recent wars was concentrated. Ive seen nato forces use some kine of weird soft armor neck protector, or like a raised collar and groin plates in photos back in the early 2000s, but after that it disappeared. People thought its not cool wearing them, or it became obsolete/heavy/restrictive? Sounds like a good thing to be honest, private parts are nice to have intact, and raised collar might save neck arteries. Right? What happened to those armor?
