All Catholics would like to know that their deceased loved ones actually made it to heaven, but would you be willing to have them actually appear to you? To have their soul return to tell you whether they are in Heaven… or Hell?
I would’ve said yes, before I heard this hair-raising story....
"At the stroke of midnight, I heard at the bottom of the hall a gloomy noise that became louder and more somber as it approached. It sounded like a cart pulled by many horses or a railroad train, almost like a canon firing. I could not describe it except that it formed a complex of such vibrating and violent rumblings to cause great fright and render everyone speechless.
As the noise approached the dormitory door, it rattled walls and the corridor floor as if they were iron plates shaken by a most potent arm. One could not measure the dwindling distance between it and us. It was like a steam engine leaving, and it was sometimes impossible to know where it is in its course amid the smoke it spread through the air."

I made a similar pact with my long deceased spiritual director. God honored the pact, but I think because of unselfish reasons. This holy priest suffered a great deal before his death and I wanted to know when he entered Heaven. He died during Lauds and I was called at 6 AM. Shortly there after I experienced his presence, full of peace and joy. I said to him, ‘ you did not have to come so soon. I would have waited until tomorrow. ‘ “ He said, “ there is no tomorrow here, only now.” This told me he was in Heaven. Eternal life is with and in God. We live in time and space as do the poor souls in purgatory.

I did a 30 day prayer to st. Joseph from a 1924 prayer book. I was given a super vivid dream . i asked St. Joseph where my relaitve is - heaven or hell. In the dream the soul and I knew each other the soul lifted his burning head and toros up and twisted slightly in suprise. After a few seconds, i woke up i. Terrible distrrss. The body was in black isolation, damned in his chamber laying down for eternity. The colorrs and appearance of the featureless body was that of a log in the fireplace - all colors of a burning log, seconds before it breaks into a pile of ash. Years later, it still haunts me.

Thank you. That was a very sombre video. A thought... St. John Bosco was terrified when a good friend returned to fulfil a pact, by the grace of God. Even when the spirit departed, John was filled with dread until sunrise. Of all the events I've heard and read in the Bible, when confronted with an angel in his glory, the first words of the angel are "Fear not!". Yet, when Our Lady was addressed by the angel, Gabriel's words were "Hail, full of grace! The Lord is with thee!" Is this a sign of familiarity between our Lady and angels by reason of her great purity? Thank you, Lord, for the Blessed Virgin Mary. Thank you for great saints, all of whom loved our Lady while here on earth. Thank you for St. Don Bosco. Ave Maria!

I don't want or need to know if my parents are in heaven or purgatory. I have hope they are saved, I will know where they are after I die, and that is good enough for me. Hope is God is what people need besides love for Him.

When I was around 12-13, me and my aunt (my father's sister) made a pact: who dies first comes to tell the other if it is or not saved. My uncle heard us talking and said: "don't do that! don't talk BS!"... it was too late. We did. My aunt is almost 100 years now, I am 48. Her health is declining and in December she had a terrible accident at home: a shelf fell upon her, and broke 3 rips of her. She called me. "If I don't get better, I will have a surgery". Well, throughout her life she had had more than 30 surgeries. That's another one for her "collection"... We talk in the whatsapp from time to time... my father died in January, 2017. I know he is in Purgatory right now and he will be there for a long long time... I am waiting now to see what will happen to my aunt. Am I gonna die first or... she is leaving this world before me? In our family we don't die young, we live to reach 100 years, unfortunately. I always say that "we have so many sins we must pay for them before leaving". LOL Well, time is passing for all of us. I have no fear of dying. Or as Marie Anrtoinette said, her last words: "you don't need courage to die!". I hope my aunt really comes and talk to me. I wouldn't be afraid at all of her. It is better to fear the living than the dead. NOTE: if you made a pact similar to ours, tell me your story. I am all ears. ;)

It's the most amazing kind of true story you can hear, but I like the words "powerful", "glorious", even "beautiful" to describe it. I only hope the word "terrifying" won't stop the more gentle souls from listening. I am sure it would have been terrifying to be there, but it's not too terrifying to listen to.

Don Bosco told the story as a cautionary tale. It's meant to frighten, much like the Hell dream, but in a good way. It's not glorious. It's a painful experience that haunted him to his dying day. His message was clear: "Don't do this." If that scares people away, so be it: it's the way he told it and I will not modify it.

@@donboscostories Thanks for your thoughts Matthew. I get your point. When I said glorious, I meant it is glorious to know that a soul of a friend is saved. A little "terror" is good for us at times, for sure. I guess the same kind of people who are frightened of stories of religion that involve terror or Hell, then go and watch a horror movie or something, so it could be a form of hypocrisy, and we can never please everyone.

My grandpa and two cousins had a friend. They used to play Ouija Board so I hear. They made the same promise. If one died they would return to tell the others if there was life after death. The friend soon died in an accident. He was ran over. Later one of my grandpa’s cousins was in bed. So they say, he appeared in front of the cousins. They said he looked scary and he told them he didn’t make it. They all became very devout Catholics after that.

There are many personal accounts of decreased relatives who have been allowed by God to visit for prayers or to reassure and comfort them and thank them for their prayers. Not every such visitation is brought was the same level of agitation as the one in this John Bosco story. God's way of working with mankind and in his universe is tailored and custom-made for each situation, According to His holy will.

if a soul has made it to heaven, why would that cause terror and even illness for those they appear to? When Christ, or Mary or the saints or angels appear, this isn't the effect that is caused.

Every time an angel appears in the Bible, the first words are always, "fear not." So apparitions from the other world can be frightening. Sister Lucia of Fatima said the image of the angel of Portugal was BURNED into her memory. God told Moses that if he looked in the face of God he would die. So he looked at the back of God the Father instead, but his face had a sort of shine/redness forever after that. It's called supernatural for a reason: above the normal.
