Yes she has been through a lot, sounds like good advice. Give her space, she will be by your side soon enough. I agree with you about the pills.

I'm extremely happy about the outcome, just a bit surprised that it is a thing.... stress, who would have thought stress cause inflammation of the bladder in cats. I've never had a rescue anxious kitty so that's new to me.

I'm glad that your vet finally got to the bottom of this. You might be in shock at the money spent, but the rule is to rule out the physical first before considering the behavioural. Poor Lila has not been with you for long enough to really understand that this is her forever home, she needs some help to do that from you. Give her a good few months to realky build on the progress you have made with her so far. Try to give her a couple more litter trays, big open ones, not lidded ones, around the home. Lidded ones are very claustrophobic for cats. Cats have a unique biological stress response where psychological stress causes the mucosal lining of the bladder to break down, which allows urine to scald the bladder wall which becomes inflamed and bleed. This can causes urinary urgency, so Lila can get caught short, cystitis hurts, urgently need a pee and be far from her tray. More trays will make her feel more relaxed as she will have more of her own scent around the place and easy access to a tray. Even a cleaned out tray will have her scent that she can smell. This will be reassuring to her. Putting up some Feliway Classic diffusers around the home will also help her feel more secure. The diffuser contains a synthesised version of the feline facial marking pheromone. When cats rub their faces against the corner of furniture, on door frames and on you, they are marking you with a scent only they can smell. It is this scent that allows them to feel secure that they are in their core territory. It's essential for a cat to build up their scent profile in the home. You won't be able to smell it. Some cubby beds so she can seek respite will be helpful too. Somewhere she can be private and rest up when she needs to. Scratching posts and scratch boxes are also good. When cats scratch, they are getting stress relief, stretching, claw maintenance and scent marking too. They have tiny scent glands between their toes and each time they scratch they are leaving a bit of their own scent. Again, this scent defines their core territory. Having a big ceramic or metal bowl of fresh water in each room that Lila has access too, will also help. Cats have a very low thirst drive (they evolved from a small desert cat) and if they have more opportunities to drink, they will drink more often. Being really well hydrated helps with cats prone to cystitis as it keeps their bladder flushing out properly. If you make these changes, you may not need to use the gabapentin. It's always good to enrich the home environment so cats can be as relaxed as possible. A tall cat tree could be helpful too. For cats, high up is a place of safety and respite. Lila's background probably caused her to feel very stressed and threatened. In cat hoarding situations, cats rarely have a chance or space to find respite. Lila has a way to go from the dreadful situation she was taken from. As you say she has been through many changes and likely is still reeling a bit from it all. Jackson Galaxy has some really good videos on creating a very low stress environment for cats. You may even be able to, if not sing, hum a kind little tune again one day without it upsetting her. Cats see the world very differently to us. Things we don't worry about can causexa cat huge stress. Cystitis isn't the only health problem that can be caused by stress. There are plenty of others, some very serious. It isn't very fair for cats, but it they are very sensitive. Lila is lovely, and I am sure you will be able to help her really find her self in your loving care. Good luck 🤞💖🐈⬛️

This! Patience is a virtue here. Look at the future and say..."a year from now she will be settled in and doing well. All these issues will be behind us". God Bless You for your time, money, energy and love for this beautiful elder gir! You are her, and my, hero.

Wow. Thank you for all this information. I've had cats all my life but from kittens. A traumatised rescue cat is different. And yes I'm making changes. I'v removed the lid of the litter box for now. She won't sleep in a cat bed, but she likes to rest in my dark closet once in a while. I leave the door ajar just enough for her to go in and out. She has her blanket there. One step at a time.

@@LadyLiLa777 I hope it helps you both. Cubby beds have a hood, so they are like firm, private tents. Some cats prefer open spaces to sleep, ours does, he had a traumatic past. I wonder if sleeping space preferences have a root in early life? So many things do. A wardrobe bed is a lovely, safe, private space. Lila is very lucky to be with you now. May you both thrive 💖🐈⬛️

Cats don't like change. If you want to introduce anything new to kitty, it should be done gradually. If you introduce a new litter box leave the old one around so the cat can choose either box as they get used to the new one. Cats receive a lot of information through smell. The old box had her scent on it; the new one does not. I hope you still have the old box. If possible, bring it back for awhile during the transition to the new box. Good luck! I'm happy to see kitty up on the couch. Cats like to have a vantage point above the floor. The more areas she can perch on the better. Also, cats like to be able to retreat somewhere quiet and safe. My cats like to get under or behind my couch and the space behind my headboard of my bed. Jackson Galaxy is very knowledgeable about cats and you can find his videos on KZbin! For anyone who likes cats and want to learn more about their behaviors, his channel is great! 👍🏼🐱 Good fortune to all!🌼🤗🌼
