In 1976, I took a course in entertainment law at USC. David Gates was our guest speaker one evening. He shared his experiences as a performer and songwriter, and then he took questions. “Make It With You” was David Gate’s breakthrough #1 hit. Soon after it hit the charts, he was back home in small town Kansas to see his mom. Proud of her son, she ambushed him with a promise to appear at her local ladies garden club. Of course, none of the women that age followed Top 40 radio, and arrangements played out with a quick verbal, same as how we all half make up our own lyrics while singing to the radio. David - and his mother - were horrified when the ladies garden club president made the introduction, “Today, we welcome Mrs. Gates’ son David who will sing his #1 National Hit, “Naked With You.”

Glen and David were complementary performers. They did it because they loved the music and the feelings the music evoked in their audience and fans. It meant something to them and we could see ourselves in the story of the lyrics. That is why their music is so timeless. Well done Fil. I really like the fact younger artists like you appreciate the absolute talent and dedication that artists like Glen and David brought to the music world.

massive respect and honor to the old school musicians... in 2024 it looks and feels like deep magic, especially when compared to what passes as music/performance today... but this is just what master musicians and sound tech people did in those days. problem solving to create wonderful presentations of the art and craft of music within the limitations of available technology was their job, and all the algorithms in the universe will never allow contemporary performers to surpass them. glad to have been born in 1952!

My thoughts exactly, and i was born in 1950. The best music will always be found in the past. We were blessed !

Glen was my very first concert at the old Hilton in Las Vegas. It was a dinner show. There were 4 entrées to choose from. I had the capon. I was in 3rd grade.

Both David and GLEN are so confident, understanding and respectful of their individual musical talents that they synergistically harmonize through musical cooperation rather than competition. True measures of rare and natural talent.

I really appreciate the energy and emotion you bring to these videos. I grew up in the 70's -80's. I remember listening to Glenn Campbell every week. I liked his music, but never took the time to truly appreciate his talent. Your videos are appreciated more than you know. Thank you.

Hi Fil, These guys are both equally talented on their own, but together are phenomenal! This performance is such a beautiful arrangement of songs masterfully played and sung by David and Glen. I do so miss these variety type shows where one musician would host and be joined by other musical artists. Their matching of vocal harmonies were outstanding. You did a great job on this analysis and demonstrating their vocal abilities. One not out doing the other, but just singing and playing for the sake of good music. Thank you for doing this video Fil, so many good things to take away from this performance! You are Amazing.. Debbie☮️

Love your channel. You are my favorite music channel. You are spot on. Glenn Campbell unbelievable talent

Such great music back then, and catching it on TV was a real treat at the time because you only heard it on the radio and record player. I feel so lucky to have grown up with a mom and dad that loved music like mine did with their huge record collection. Including a lot of Glen Campbell. I was probably not even 5 when Make it with You was a hit, but I remember it on the radio.

Fil, what a wonderful analysis this is! David Gates and Glenn Campbell are performing together ! They blend their voices so well. This just sounds heavily, and you have explained exactly why it is so lovely to listen to ! Thank you for educating us and pointing out the details of each of their voices ! ❤

Thank you, as always, Fil. Analysis can kill the beauty of what’s being analyzed. Yours enhances it. I am so grateful.

Very True! Analysis tends to break things down to their lowest constituent qualities, but Fil uses it to examine why and how the music goes *beyond* the “perfect” to reach our emotional/supra-rational selves. Very zen.

What I took away from this episode was the level of respect each artist had for the other. Thank you.

Campbell worked in the studio with The Beach Boys when they recorded Pet Sounds and was a widely sought out studio session guitarist and backing vocalist by SO many artists across multiple genres. Not surprising at all he was able to play 2nd here and have perfectly timed and tuned fills. One of the more talented musicians ever. Wildly underrated here in the States.

I miss the time of variety shows that often featured the star plus someone else. Comedy (Carol Burnett, for example) and Glen Campbell, John Hartman, Sonny and Cher, Hallmark Summer replacement show, where I first saw George Carlin...so much goodness... There's a reason Glen Campbell was so sought after as a studio player before he broke out....he played lead guitar on "Good Vibrations" with the Beach Boys for example.

The 1970s had incredible music. I'm glad I was around for it. Thanks for sharing this analysis video. Hope you have a great 2023. Cheers, Fil! 👍🏻👍🏻✌️

What is amazing is, back then, people were actually musically talented and had to consistently perform honestly, without having to rely on the click tracks and stuff. We still have actual musicians nowadays (Lady Gaga, for instance), but back before digitized music, you had to rely on your musicianship, and not on “fix it later.” You had to be a top-level performer. Not lazy about it. You had to actually know what you were doing.

I always enjoy your insightful observations. It adds to my original experience of oldies like this one. I probably watched this clip live when I was a teen. Miss these guys so much. I miss riding in my orange Pinto (yeah, I had one before they lit up) with the radio on, windows down, volume up, musical favorites blaring and a thumbs up from the car next to me at the light. The diversity of music gave me a wide range of favorites. Loved David Gates and Bread, the Carpenters, the Temps, Tommy James, Gladys Knight and the Pips, the Stones, Guess Who, the Who, and on and on. Never bored and always eager for the next masterpiece! And believe me, we knew who the legends were while they were creating their stories. The 60s and 70s music set the bar for soothing the hurt and stirring the soul. Might go listen to some Chicago and Joe Cocker. Both bring back such fond memories of those turbulent years.
